Thanks for the responses guys; the buildwindows thing looks especially promising but it might be too far into the future I'll have to see. EMC is a big name, but we don't really operate at a scale that requires that level of virtualisation/management. RE: Vegas, definitely doesn't have to be. I'm out there probably twice a year for vendor trade shows as it is, and have been for the last 4 years. I have 'Vegas fatique' to put it kindly, where the things I notice most are how fake and mercenary everything is there. Here's some other stuff I've been looking at to give you guys an idea of where I'm at. If any of you have been to any of these please feel free to chime in about your experiences: http://www.mobileworldcongress.com/ (March, in Barcelona this year moohaha ok that's probably not going to happen) http://mobilewebdevconference.com/ (Feb in San Fran, ehhh could be ok? Never heard of weave the people or circa) http://vslive.com/Home.aspx (.NET Several dates, but will probably be desktop focussed) http://devintersection.com/ (.NET ugggh sharepoint) The security thing is interesting, but unfortunately would be mostly personally interesting, and not professionally interesting. I'm also scared of what I'd learn since right now it feels like there no actual such thing as security RE: Snowtires. They are important. I know the guy who brought it up probably won't want to read this, but if you've got snow for more than a month you should absolutely have them. All-seasons are a sick joke in comparison; I thought the whole switch em around thing was a big scam to bring in seasonal tire-installer bucks but then I consulted for a large tire retailer. The difference in elasticity in the tire, the tread depth, the tread pattern, all of it, makes a measurable and possibly live-saving difference.

Right now I am making 70ishk a year; what would be a good salary for a job that requires kernel module programming/system programming in C/C++ for the embedded Linux in Albany? Albany is a fairly inexpensive metro. Simply approaching it from a cost of living standpoint, 90k will be decent in one of the suburbs like Delmar or Bethlehem. I'm not sure where cost of living stands in the city anymore, been a few years since I've had friends living in the city proper. As far as fair compensation for the work you'll be doing, I haven't got the foggiest idea. Though the real party is in Rochester!

Here's some things that pissed me off today: -Getting roped in to a two-and-a-half-hour long conference call for a project starting tomorrow morning to test poo poo and fix about a dozen different problems that could've been addressed before the holidays. -Being behind all day as a result of said conference call. -Screwing up and cancelling the wrong backup job. Wouldn't normally be a problem, but it's for an Exchange DB, and said DB has been full all day, and for some reason people get really cranky when they don't get their emails. Thing not pissing me off, though, is the fact I get to train a new employee on stuff I work on. Hopefully I don't scare them off with my "intricate knowledge" of checking to see if network equipment is down in Solarwinds or how to restart a server remotely through Command Prompt.

Galler posted:All season tires are garbage unless you get the really good (expensive) ones and even then they're worse than winter or summer tires during their respective seasons. There's a reason all seasons are frequently called 'no season' tires. I don't know; when I was researching tyres for my car, I ended up buying Bridgestone A001 all-season tyres, because they performed supremely in standing water tests, which stood out to me. Pretty appropriate for British weather, where it's pissing down a lot, but ice and snow are rarely concerns that last. My economy didn't suffer (I recorded every tank for the whole time I had the car) after replacing the Michelin Energy that were on it before, but the cornering grip difference was incredible. Going back to snow driving talk. I drive a RWD '06 Ford Ranger with all-season tires and as long as I have some sandbags in the bed next to the tailgate I have no problem in snow. I just have to take it slow and know my route to avoid steep hills. The only time I get uneasy is when I saw other people on the roads and I would normally let them pass me so I could get as far away from them as possible.Chalets the Baka posted:Bad news: CTO came over to my desk and said to me, "You should think about getting snow tires because I don't want to have to feel like I need to let you leave early because you don't have the proper tires. They're an inexpensive investment and will make you that much safer." I was the usual suspect to cover the phones/NOC at my old company when it snowed or we had a hurricane about to hit because I lived closest, had a truck, and knew how to drive in that weather safely. I drove in after a particularly bad storm (half inch of ice on the roads under half a foot of snow) and after that I had a sit down with my director and told him that I don't mind driving in and taking the risk, but if I ever get into an accident coming or going from work on their orders during a storm I would expect them to foot the bill for my car and medical expenses. The next big snow storm they had a portable NOC laptop and we all worked from home. My state of mind has changed now that I'm at a new company, and I don't view any job that risks you life as "worth it", even if it's just a few times a year.

We have 'Orders' in our system, and instead of having a 'purchase order #' field, there's a 'notes' field, which (most of the time) is used to put the purchase order #. Ugh.

People who work against the system... and should know better. In our industry vendors are notorious for never getting costs 100% correct before we have to receive purchase orders. To that end, our ERP software actually includes a function to correct costs/add adjustments after a purchase order has already been received and even if the merchandise has already been invoiced out. Instead of using this function, my boss will instruct people to "reverse" a purchase order by re-creating it with the old costs and negative quantities, and then re-create it yet again with positive quantities and the correct costs. Taking 4x the time/work and loving up our typical work-flow in the process. He says he prefers it this way, but can't explain why...

My first interview went really well. This place is even closer than the last one so I was able to walk there. I don't have a suit that fits properly so I wore nice slacks, one of my custom shirts and a tie, and then dressed it up with an overcoat since it looked like rain. I met with the president of the company and he was wearing a hoodie, jeans and sneakers. It's a marketing place and I have a lot of experience with those. My brother bought me the 2015 edition of "What color is your parachute?" for Christmas and I used the practice interview questions last night and I think it helped alot. The company is still small and their first I.T. person was too junior and they've suffered as a result, so now they're looking for someone like me that doesn't just do the I.T. basics but can get right into their workflow and lead the way. In the end it sounds like it will become a CIO/CTO position because of their need to grow their in-house apps which are critical to their business. At the very end of the interview he asked "So... how much does someone like you cost?" Next interview is with him and their VP, first week of the new year. After lunch I'm going to the tailor to see about getting a suit made, and then I'm off to finally buy some grown-up shoes. Thank you all for your support. I don't feel freaked out anymore and am really focused on moving on to the next thing and putting my latest learning experience into effect.

I have been ignoring my works email since the 22nd, and will continue ignoring it until the 5th. I may have accidentally read it on the first day and going in on the 5th when 3 customers have major issues is going to be unfun. Maybe 2015 will be the year of having more than one person in the entire company who understands my job.
