I'll do the list thing. Although now that we're definitely doing CineBytes I may make an actual effort to finally see some of the stuff I missed like: Selma, Venus in Fur, Blue Ruin, Joe, It Felt Like Love, Violette, The Double, Stranger by the Lake, Filth, Memphis, Locke, Jodorowsky's Dune, and The Guest. Unfortunately I won't be able to see Maps to the Stars until February (but I'm gonna see it with Cronenberg in-person!!!) Anyway, here's a partial For Your Consideration list. Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, while playing fests in 2014, didn't get it's official release until this like this week, so I think it would fall under 2015.

It's popped up on dozens of Top 10 lists, Criticker has it as 2014, IMDb has it as 2014, and had a limited US release in November.

A few nominations that I'd like to point out (and I'll probably be back to do an effort post on Selma) Best Picture Joe Beyond the Lights (I don't even know if anyone in CineD saw it since it wasn't heavily marketed and is romance, but it's part romance, part character study with commentary on the portrayals and roles of women in media (specifically hip hop), the stigma and ignorance of depression, and the pressure of black men to be Upstanding almost to prove racists wrong. It's touching without being schmaltzy, and by the end there's been real character growth that's just as important as the romance.) Zero Motivation [it had a NYC run at the Film Forum in December, so it counts] The Missing Picture (I know it had an NYC release last winter so I think it counts, though I know it was running festivals in 2013 so I'm not sure of the US release date) Best Actor Nicolas Cage - Joe Channing Tatum - Foxcatcher Best Actress Stacy Martin - Nymphomaniac pt. 1 (this was her first film role ) Gugu Mbatha-Raw - Beyond the Lights (She's absolutely outstanding in ways I'm not eloquent enought to describe) Best Supporting Actor Gary Poulter - Joe Best Adapted Screenplay Joe Best Original Screenplay Dear White People Zero Motivation Best Ensemble Dear White People Zero Motivation The Echoplex Award for Art Design The Missing Picture Mood Indigo The Double Best Documentary The Missing Picture The Unknown Known Point and Shoot Not-Crash Dear White People Zero Motivation (for portraying sexism and sexual assault in the military) And lastly., Top Five for the Moral High Horse award due to the ridiculous amount of misogyny, including women literally crying rape and attempting to make a character so superficial she admits her literal only talent is blowjobs.

I'll throw out The Gambler as a possible nominee for the Armond White award. It's got a 47% on RT, and I thought it was pretty decent, and parts of it were actually great. Also, I didn't see them, but Horns, Tusk, and Into the Storm were all three talked up by at least a couple of people around here, and are all below the maximum score.

Others have mentioned it, but I wanted to stump a bit for We Are The Best! Here's the trailer. You can watch it on Netflix here. It's not my favorite movie of the year, but it's up there. It's a very sweet, low-key coming-of-age movie that has a lot in common with Boyhood, minus the gimmick. Worth a watch.

I hated Short Term 12, but Keith Stanfield was the best thing in it by a ridiculous margin. Selma makes it clear that wasn't some fluke as he holds his own with some really great actors.

I thought Carmen Ejogo was good, it's just too bad she got saddled with the clunkiest part of the script. The "Fog" speech was the only bum note in the movie for me.

Y'all fuckers talking about the food/meal category need to consider the unimaginable yet understated tension during the scene early in Still Alice where the title character is preparing a dinner while doing some memory exercises. EDIT: Holy poo poo this is literally the first time Still Alice was mentioned in this thread? Nominate Julianne Moore for Best Actress obviously but also Kristen Stewart for Best Supporting Actress. And Into the Storm for the Armond White award.

Ah yeah, that'd make sense. It's been in NYC for a couple weeks now, but this was in fact the first weekend where I was actually able to get a ticket, so your story checks out. Sorry for casting aspersion on the fine folks of CineD - but seriously, see it when you can. There's a stumble or two in it, but when that film is on it is on.

According to legend, during the shooting of loving Åmål he was screaming at the actors to stop acting. It works really well. Only drawback is that the scenes with adult actors become less believable since it's so obvious that they are playing a role, and the difference in performance between adults and teenagers can be pretty grating.
