So Amanda Peet (wife of Benioff) is getting some attention for admitting she originally thought adapting the books into a show was a bad idea. I'm eagerly awaiting the discussions I'm going to get from this FB post:

"Amanda Peet is getting a lot of hate for saying she originally thought Game of Thrones was a bad idea, but have you considered that maybe she's just actually read the entire series?"

I can just sense people nervously teetering at the edge of the reply button, eager to defend their favorite shows honor, afraid to engage with a dreaded book reader demon...and somewhere deep in their hearts...struggling to admit that this is the dark and terrible truth.

Instead of any of that, someone who I have not talked to in almost 10 years, who I thought didn't actually use facebook just "liked" the pre-emptive reply I put in there saying "ADWD is a bad book".

On other side, I've mentioned it before, but my gold standard is Iain Banks' narration of The Princess and The Queen and (as a smaller companion piece) The Rogue Prince. It is absolutely *incredible*. Banks is so freaking amazing doing The Princess and the Queen - he does great, individual voices for every single character! So of course Rhaenyra has her own voice, as does Aegon II and Daemon and Aemond and Criston Cole and everyone. It's a really, really impressive job. Even minor (but extremely memorable) characters like Blood and Cheese or Lucerys Velaryon get their own appropriately memorable and distinct voices. And Banks' own voice is such a deep, rich, hypnotic thing that the only drawback is that it's so nice to listen to that it almost lulls me to sleep at times.

To be honest, I kind of wish they'd give Dotrice's job to Banks. Given that Banks has narrated all the ASoIaF stories GRRM has released (at least the ones Dotrice hasn't narrated) for a few years now and done so well I'd have to think he'd be next in line, plus his role as Jorah Mormont doesn't hurt.

Iain Banks has been dead since 2013, pretty sure you mean Iain Glen

Iain Banks would've been closer to the goony Jorah in the books.

Glen's voice seems perfect for audiobooks, though :allears:

The series probably won't be much more popular than it is now, but the crazy people will probably pay more if it's after GRRM dies.

I have some limited editions which are going for silly money on ebay. I'm thinking if I wait until the show starts up again there'll probably be more interest in ASOIAF stuff. I'm also concerned the longer I wait, the more people will realise they're not good books.

Wait until the second episode of this season airs. Everyone will be in full swing by then and it will be early enough that they won't know is a wheel spinning tv season of crappy books.

Yeah if you really want to sell now you're better off doing it right when the show starts up again or near it's finale. Otherwise just wait two years for when GRRM dies and make bank.

That's it then. No chance - at all - the books finish before the show. None. It's over. We are going to find out how it all ends on the show. Did the publisher realize that was what they were saying? They would have been better off saying nothing at all.

I wonder if the IMAX showing they're doing is some sort of practice run for a hiatus year where they run a summer series IMAX thing where they add scenes and better FX in for poo poo like battle of blackwater and whatever other epic poo poo they had to skimp on.

Longshot, but they are about to run into desperate times.

What would be the point of a hiatus? A year is not long enough to finish both Winds and Dream. The show is finishing before the books no matter what.

I don't think its a long shot, I think its a no shot.

I can't imagine anyone involved with the money side of the GRRM is idiotic enough to go into a contract with HBO that would let them progress the show beyond the books in any significant way without something happening like him dying. Like...I see some potential for something crazy happening just because the show is generating a lot of money, possibly more than GRRM has the ability to fight...but straight up going on without him sounds like a very heavy lift.

Can you imagine HBO being willing to make a contract with GRRM that gives such decision-making powers on their multi-million dollar franchise to him? The only way this thing gets made at all is if HBO runs the show completely. They'll go on without him and not give it a second thought.

I'm sure that HBO figured that if they felt they needed GRRM at all in the last season(s), his involvement with the show's writing staff meant that they could tap him.
