It's an interesting kind of show because the MC and her crew aren't the hotshot stars of the band (like in most sports shows), but generic line members. Kousaka and Asuka are the ones with the strong personalities that really stand out from the crowd, and we're supposed to watch them from the MC's eyes.

Also Goto and that chubby girl make the most adorable couple.
Yeah I really dig that there's a good sense of the larger group from the perspective of newbies, the hopes they bring in and project outward, etc. Especially because there's really no way I can get interested in something focusing wholly on traditional four moe character personalities in 2015. I wish the music bits would cover more parts to give a feel for different sections of the pieces, rising intensity and climax, instead of sort of opening and abrupt transition to the end, but that may be asking for something too difficult to execute.

This episode was so beautiful and fun it made me want to cry. This show is great to have coming off of Shirobako, and it's not at all weaker for using the high school setting.

The "catching up with an old middle school buddy at the marching band competition while in uniform" scene was unbelievably accurate.

This whole show (and the stories shared in the thread) make me want to buy thank you gifts for my old band teachers for being not-terrible.

Raise Chris Coons' taxes so that we can have Medicare for All.

They're nailing the poo poo out of these characterizations. It's a case of an anime where they're not just relying on moe to carry the show anymore, they're actually just telling a really compelling slice of life story from a good perspective character surrounded by extemely likable and strong characters. It's pretty astonishing, when you think about it.

Also their sound direction is pretty god drat amazing. Take the scene when kumiko has her moment when she realizes she's actually changed quite a bit in a short time after meeting her old middle school friend. It felt like a scene out of a ghibli movie. One of the really good ones.

That physical part got me thinking, go girls in Japan really fret over their boob size that much, or is that just an anime thing?

Plus, Kumiko's a little on the shallow side, so this feels like the sort of thing she'd stress out over.

I was asking that seriously. I don't know any girls where I live that get insecure about boob size. There's plenty of the usual "I don't think I'm pretty enough," but never boob size.

Hajime no Ippo spends an uncomfortable hilarious amount of time focusing on the size of the titular character's schlong.

This show is easily the best thing Kyo-Ani has done in years. And Asuka is the best character.

That guy at the end was trombone dude, right? He hasn't been in it enough for me to take any notice so far.

I thought it was Kumiko's old friend? Does he play the trombone? I'm still matching people to instruments.

That's because you didn't notice it, not because teenage girls are not insecure about it. And it goes both ways, if the girl is really stacked, she worries all the time about looking like a slut and so on. Perfect boobs? well, let me worry about my tight gap.

Hmmm, sounds like BS to me. I mean if women actually worried about the size of their chests there would be some sort of medical procedure to do something about it.

Yeah, I think it applies to any instrument but for ones like that it's especially true. Doing almost any activity alone that is set up for a group is less fun than doing it with the group so giving her a taste of the payoff for all that solo practice was a really good way of getting her to commit to the whole thing.

Also really liked Goto's impassioned speech about why the Tuba is great, "It's great because it sucks and is hard!" it does not sound right but I get what he means.

This is the only show with so much moe that I actually like, and it just keeps getting better every week. I really like that they don't think the audience is too dumb to figure out hazuki's real motivation so they don't feel the need to spell it out.

This is oddly hypnotic. Maybe the combination of the eyes and the simultaneous tuba playing.
