Not gonna give you medical advice, but my girlfriend went through something similar. She was hating her job a lot, getting stressed out every day, hating her life. She started getting weird pains all over, but particularly a sensation of being stabbed in the upper right part of her stomach, near her gall bladder. Anyways, long story short (and in a country where medical expenses can bankrupt you) Turns out, there's nothing physically wrong with her. It was stress and anxiety doing it. Now, maybe there's something physically wrong with you, but I'm just seeing some similarities and I'm thinking that maybe you should grill up some burgers and have a few beers and see if that makes you feel better.

Based off all evidence so far its seems to be nothing "too" serious, I just bleed constantly from my anus etc. They think it could be an ulcer or some sort of internal tear, they wont know until the poke around from both ends though so in the meantime they are like just try to reduce your anxiety, try to rest up and not stress myself too much about what I see everytime I dare to remove my pants. I do hate to place such disgusting details really but its part of what has been adding to my stress and I am not particularly ashamed about butt stuff so you know...I am sure it will all be fine. They did say given my age its incredibly unlikely to be something I should REALLY worry about so it helps to know that.

How do recruiting companies work? There are so many of them around here, how do I pick one? What if I pick Company A but my dream job is with Company B? Do I sign up with all of them or is that bad form?

Big recruiting firms tend to have good relationships with cool companies that could be hard to get into for an interview otherwise. Once you're in they can also prep you a lot better since they know the client/interviewees well. That's where I saw the strengths at least.

If it's Robert Half, save yourself the time and frustration. Seriously, though, if you've got some experience, get your LinkedIn public and up to date. I've had multiple recruiters coming to me about open positions. LinkedIn was so much more effective than trolling Monster or Indeed, and it didn't require hundreds of silent rejections!

Once you're in they can also prep you a lot better since they know the client/interviewees well. That's where I saw the strengths at least. I disagree with this. If I have a rock star candidate, I might ask for a week or two headstart, but ultimately that puts the burden of "finding you a job" on my shoulders so I would recommend finding 2-3 recruiters in your market that you can build a good rapport with. It's important to remember that agencies get paid by our clients so our job (and how I get paid) is to find the right candidates for their positions. That said, the feel good part of my job is helping people, not companies. My candidates take jobs with other agencies all the time and I don't take it personally. It's business, and if I'm in your shoes I'd do the same thing. Just be transparent about it and let me know you're interviewing elsewhere. If I didn't get you a job, I'm going to congratulate you and make sure you know to call me next time you are on the market. To answer your question Swink, I would meet with a few recruiters, more if you're looking hardcore and without a job. Try to get recommendations from peers so you're not just throwing darts at a board. Get an idea for their clients/scope and their process and see how it meshes with what you're looking for. But above and beyond, try and get a read for the person that's sitting across from you and see if they really want to help you. In general, the bigger the company, the more the recruiter is numbers-driven and less inclined to take the time to really get to know you and the key points in your search. The flip side of that is sometimes the larger agencies do have access to bigger national accounts, etc. That said, there are good and bad recruiters everywhere and the only way to find out is to meet them. Good recruiters will invest time and energy in meeting you and building a relationship whereas bad recruiters will generally be looking at you for a single position, or will do lovely things like tell you you're submitted when you aren't. One of my candidates left a full time job for what he was told was a contract to hire and it ended up being just a 3 month contract, which is just a really short-sighted and unethical move by the recruiter. If you're not comfortable vetting recruiters yourself, I would just ask around for recommendations. Edit: and absolutely get your LinkedIn up to date. I'm I the only one who feels like LinkedIn is just unnecessary and just one more thing you have to keep up to date? I mean you already have your resume out there on job sites, why have one more that will just get you more spam? I guess I've just never needed it and it seems like a hassle to invest a lot of time into it.

I'm on track to become the network admin in <1 year, certs are paid for and I get to touch a lot of neat technology. Small, public University IT. Pay sucks, everything else is great. Future is uncertain, though-- IT Director is retiring next year and this university has started a trend of outsourcing operations, although no mention has been made about our department. Quoting myself here. I went to the interview yesterday, and it went well. I was incorrect in the numbers department; it would be about 100 users spread across 6 locations in the county. A couple libraries, sheriff's office, two courthouses, and a road maintenance dept. 35 hour work week, better insurance, worse 401k (no match), same holidays and same PTO. The interesting part is, I would be steering the county's technology direction for the foreseeable future. They need to come up with a 5-year technology plan, and this position would be the one to create and implement it. It would also be the guy who fixes broken printers, so there's that. They are receptive to paid training expenses, but since it's a county gov't any and all expenses will need to be approved by the quorum court. Hardware purchase, staff expansion (I was told it is feasible to hire more IT staff in the future), literally every penny spent must be approved by the court. It's a tempting position because of the influence within the political system I'd have, but I'm leaning toward a No at this time. A 7% increase is too small to throw away what I've built and am building up to at my current job.

Fighting for every penny sucks. I can't imagine how much more it sucks to fight for it with a public committee. Especially if you're going to be dealing with that level of stuff and fixing printers.

Tons of good groups to join, whether they are technical forums or local job hunting groups etc. I don't advocate updating it every day, but at least every year or two.

Yeah I usually try to make sure the answer to that question is "Not me". Previous job, it was the other jr sysadmin. Current job our company is very small and we don't spend a lot of money on hardware, so most computer purchases come from the director for new employees or from the sysadmins if it's a replacement for an end user (we have about 15 end users). I actually watched a dude get fired (mostly) for slightly loving up a PC order. We ended up purchasing like 30 new desktops and 20 new laptops, but for some reason all of the desktops came with 2x DisplayPort video cards and we only had like ~6 DVI to DisplayPort adapters in the house. I guess they had to tack on the additional expense for the adapters to the purchase order for the desktops + laptops themselves for some bureaucratic reason and it "delayed the period" or something? Accounting was pissed, the CFO was pissed, he ended up leaving shortly afterwards. I try to avoid spending company money as much as possible because I'm positive that I just do not give enough of a gently caress to spot mistakes like that. To be fair, it was out of his control that we needed to order small form factor desktops (came straight from the CEO's wife) which had a tendency to blow out their power supply once every ~9 months and had to come with all sorts of other nonstandard components, but still support 2x monitors. Also apparently our Dell rep had changed 3 times in 3 months and the new guy neglected to mention that the desktops were coming with 2x displayport. Still "his fault", but yeah, definitely not something I ever want to deal with.
