And then a movie that canonizes the heterosexual couple.

Tamako only played the yuri in one direction. It never looked mutual. The biggest pairing was still Tamako X Mochi

Edit: Tamako x Mochizou comes in second

I never finished Tamako or watched the movie but Tamako was so childish any romance with her would be an uncomfortable prospect tbh.

I was going to say that Euphonium was the first original KyoAni story that they seem to have gotten right, but nope it's based on a novel/manga/whatever. Regardless I like this show and don't think it really matters who if any the main character ends up with.

I disagree, as Shuuichi's interactions with Kumiko makes for the most boring run-of-the-mill LI for every generic manga/anime romance story created, while Reina's are Cool and Good. That's my opinion.

It's based on a novel, and not a light novel, just a regular one.

I assume the narration in the episodes are excerpts from the book. Since it's a full novel and not an LN, it doesn't sound quite as terrible

Seriously. There's something about Shuichi that just irritates the poo poo out of the audience. There is something about the way he is framed by the camera. He never starts off as the focus of the shots, and instead always slides into frame from off-screen, so it always feels like he's intruding on the Kumiko's and the audience's train of thought.

Personality wise, he has none. We have absolutely no idea what's going through his head, we only know him through Kumiko, and from that she can barely put up with the guy.

Kyoani is capable of making really hot guys. Oreki was hot, the Frees were hot, and here Gotou and Taki are hot. With Shuichi, Kyoani pulled out all the stops to make him the antithesis of hot.

And instead, Kousaka sets Kumiko's and the audience's hearts a-flutter.

I don't think they'll ever do something that's not an adaptation. It's pretty much their MO.

Hell if you compare it to the closest KyoAni analogue, Mochizou blows Shuichi out of the water personality-wise, and just plain in how entertaining he is on the screen interacting with the rest of the cast. And he's also present from the start rather than being mostly irrelevant until halfway through the series.

Yeah I was counting the likes of Chuunibyo/KnK/Free as original works since those novel contests seem to just be a way for KyoAni to outsource the actual writing part.

Yes, the only interpretation I can have of a Shuichi end is that it would be intentionally tragic, showing how as time passes our dreams crumble and we settle for whatever is safe and familiar and dull.

Fast forward 20 years and housewife Kumiko cleans a cold and silent flat and finds a rusting euphonium beneath a pile of mouldy boxes. She tries to play it but could make no sound. She throws it out. The end.

He'll be an underpaid but perfectly competent investment banker. He'll swallow his pride and go drinking with his boss twice a week, and after ten years on the job he'll 'drunkenly' mention a promotion. His boss will laugh and tell him to ask him again in another ten years. Shuichi goes home and eyes a rope.

Not today, he thinks. Not today.

Good compilation video. I hadn't caught that Kumiko actually had noticed him and consciously ignored him while she was walking and practicing her fingering. Similarly, that the euphonium is too heavy to carry a few blocks or whatever to practice with Shuuichi but not to carry who-knows-how-far just because Reina asked.

I have a soft backpack case for my 4 valve compensating euphonium and it's actually decently heavy if you're walking several kilometres. And I'm 6'3" and hike every summer, so for a teenage girl I could see it being a pain in the rear end. Obv the thing with not doing it for Shuuichi but doing it for Reina has a different reason then the weight.

Too depressing, instead divorced single mum Kumiko accidentally meets up with her old friend Reina at the train station, older and wiser she realises what it is that has been missing from her life all along.
