I had a look on facebook at an adoption thing just now, and jesus christ people are so defensive of the birds they've given up on. Like half the cockatoos there, the previous owners want to be in regular contact and demand that i you adopt the bird they be allowed to visit whenever like you are some sort of bird daycare.

Like, you've given the bird to a rescue center, you clearly can't look after it and who is going to want to adopt it if you have a full resume of demands of a new owner?

I switched Captain Bitey over to the Vetafarm ~*~Nutriblend~*~ pellets (he was on the Vetafarm Maintenance Pellets before) at the vet's request. He took very happily to the first ones and has only been on them for a week so I was okay to just swap one for the other. And he REALLY likes them. They are coloured pellets, which I was concerned about, but my vet said they're better in his experience, nutritionally more or less identical to the Maintenance pellets, and, most importantly, "produce a better quality stool". As a specialist avian vet he has many fascinating and extensive thoughts on bird stools. Captain Bitey's stools are high quality, of course.

Anyway, like my chickens, Captain Bitey's favourite colours seem to be red, yellow, and orange. He eats his red and yellow pellets first and likes red and yellow coloured toys. My mum was visiting for the weekend and got him a little "cozy corner" from the local Petbarn (basically a fluffy piece of fabric you tie in place in a corner with elastic ties, she thinks he'll like it because he loves sleeves, shirts, and towels) and a shredding toy from the vet, which is made of wooden blocks, plant bits, and leather. The plant bits and blocks are red and yellow and Captain Bitey has been giving them a bit of a chew. He's also discovered that if he bops his beak against them hard enough he can make the bells jangle.

My dad has apparently been stocking up on Christmas presents for the "Grandbirdy" and has been requesting frequent emails and SMSes on what he's been up to.

Anyone bored enough to give any opinions on foraging toys? I want to get a few to try and help keep them busy and make their fortnight boarding at the vet next month less painful. I'm poor so can't just buy them all but it's hard to narrow down what would be best. Things to keep in mind:

-They'll be at the vet for two weeks, and cage out time may be minimal so stuff that keeps them occupied as much as possible would be best
-Inko and Ohtori don't seem to really have much preference in toys except attacking bells, Steve likes chewing cardboard etc
-If it's too hard they won't use it, if it's too easy same
-Vet would need to be able to access it easily or not often/at all
-Not sure if there's anything else to think of

Here's a list of what is available/suitable here, links from wherever (can't order from most places due to insane shipping)-

Treasure chest toy: http://www.northernparrots.com/parrots-treasure-tough-foraging-toy-for-parrots-prod37809/
Foraging wheel: http://www.northernparrots.com/original-foraging-wheel-interactive-creative-parrot-toy-prod371102/
Windmill tower toy: http://www.mysafebirdstore.com/CREATIVE_FORAGING_SYSTEM-Windmill_Foraging_Toy_by_Creative_Foraging.html

Foraging carousel: http://www.mysafebirdstore.com/CREATIVE_FORAGING_SYSTEM-Foraging_Carousel_6_X_6.html
Space circles: http://www.northernparrots.com/space-circles-foraging-parrot-toy-prod371294/
Holder: http://www.funtimebirdy.com/creative-foraging-system-cockatiel-amazon-parrot-african-grey-parrot.html medium, dunno what size this is
Four drawers: http://www.mysafebirdstore.com/CREATIVE_FORAGING_SYSTEM-Four_Big_Drawers_Foraging_Box.html
Star cup thing: http://www.scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/foraging-star/

The last two links look way too easy for conures, but maybe they'd be good as babby's first foraging toy for a cockatiel? All he'd have to do is open a drawer or lift a lid, and the acrylic is transparent to see treats. Surely even a :derptiel: could manage that? Steve will probably only be let out once or twice, if at all (since he's shy and won't go back in easily) and there's no windows for him to stare out of all day like he does here so it would be good for him to have something to occupy himself. The "seek" thing and "holder" might also be good? Does anyone have foraging toys for their cockatiels?

Ohtori already has these:

http://www.northernparrots.com/creative-foraging-push-and-pull-parrot-toy-prod371268/
http://www.northernparrots.com/barrel-of-fun-entertaining-foraging-toy-for-parrots-prod37801/ in green
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Treat-Wheel-Foraging-toy-parrots/dp/B008ATQ5TS/

Inko inherited the barrel already, but is too stubborn to try turning it the other way after learning which way worked, so it can sit unopened for days. He can also get the push-pull toy, since he doesn't need mobility or feet for that. He might find the wheel hard for those reasons, but who knows

(The site here also has these... http://www.northernparrots.com/parrot-roller-skates-small-prod344333/ )

Yeah, his poo is REALLY green at the moment. The vet said that's normal and that it won't stain clothes or anything, it'll wash out with water (which I did notice). On the subject of poo Captain Bitey DOES seem to have a superior stool quality. It's a lot easier to pick up in one piece without getting everywhere. Roudybush stools are apparently even better. I will have to find out for myself at some point.

Today I had to leave Captain Bitey on his own for quite a while (work and visiting my brother to get a new laptop and pay his rent because he's an idiot who hosed up his attempt to switch from Youth Allowance to Newstart and might be sans money for a couple of weeks). He seems to have had fun chewing his shredding toy and, when it got dark, cuddled up in his Cozy Corner for a nap. He was very happy to see that I had returned once he woke up. He made many squeaks to persuade me to sit at my desk where he can enjoy hiding in my sleeve, squeaking at wild parrots, and watching whatever I'm doing on the internet. He is currently sitting in my cleavage (I am wearing my new favourite "dressing up nicely" bra) snoozing and using my left boob as a comfy pillow.

One slides open (he worked that out and just kinda stands on it and shoves it with his foot), another one opens on a hinge and he can open that one too. The third one opens on a hinge, but in the opposite direction to the hinge one and he can't figure THAT one out.

The fourth one the lid is connected on one corner and it rotates out to the side, just swinging away attached by the one corned (never actually lifts up, if you get what I mean? I am having a bad time using my words to describe this), and he can't figure that out either.

Sure! Ivan had the "treasure chest" foraging toy that took him about a week to crack. He alternated between absolutely hating the drat thing and furiously pacing/shrieking in the cage at it and grabbing delicious nutriberries and peanuts out of it. Once he figured it out he never forgot, so I dubbed it the 'easy' one.

He also had a cylindrical, vertical one that had several rotating slots, and I'd put a couple of treats in each one. He'd be able to get from the top one and the bottom two, but any in the middle he'd just try to break in from the side. It was 'good' in the sense that it was puzzling but he ended up just getting really angry at it most of the time and trying (but failing) to crack it open. Maybe your birds are smarter and will do a little better?

They really helped, though. In my case it simply bought time for me to try to fix the problem of him being lonely while I was at work, but it turns out that I simply couldn't meet his needs. So in a sense, they were worth every penny for keeping himself from overpreening when I wasn't home.

Rather than a dish that they can just stuff their face into and get food at will, its a puzzle box they have to solve to get food, or the food is hidden behind a heap of shredding poo poo or whatever. Keeps them occupied for a bit of time as they get their food, or drives them loving mental and causes them to scream at the puzzle like you just hung Lemarchand's box in their cage.

I make a puzzle toy for Taco by stuffing apple wedges into a cardboard toilet roll tube, and then threading that onto his fruit skewer, he enjoys that quite a bit.

He remembered the different combinations that you can make with the key turns? That's pretty awesome! Even if it takes a week until it's obsolete that's a week of the vet time taken up with a new toy. Something that will always take a bit of effort might be better though, with how expensive they can be.

Fukkin' lol

I make simple foraging/chewing toys out of egg boxes. Rip the lid off, attach the bottom somewhere, sprinkle food in the sections. You can make it harder by putting sticks* through the raised parts so they have to move around them or even chew through them, and harder still by attaching stuff to the sticks like a bit of tied on kitchen roll. You could leave the lid part for some sections so they have to lift it up to get at food.

You could also shove sticks* through a cardboard tube to make a shelf inside the tube, put a nut or whatever in it, and attach that to the cage so they have to chew through (or remove sticks) to get at the food. Add shredded newspaper so they have to look through that for their treat, or can pull it out through any chewed holes, etc

You can make a lot of toys out of random household poo poo and they'll be happy :v:
