One great little story about the making of From Beyond is that one of the FX guys basically tore a couple of fingers to tatters and continued working for a couple days, got checked into a clinic (they were in Spain, I think), and escaped out a window when they wanted to amputate.

From Beyond is batshit insane in the best way. I always want to watch it for Halloween, because no one has ever seen it or heard of it (or believe me when I describe it), but can never find a copy. It used to be on Netflix streaming years ago.

Castle Freak really does own. I watched it on suggestion from the Flop House, so if you enjoy it make sure you check out Head of the Family and the Invisible Maniac. (note: I'd say the Invisible Maniac is more softcore pornography and less horror, but he's still invisible).

I really need to see From Beyond. Re-Animator killed at my halloween party last year and I've been meaning on doing a proper double feature with the two of them.

wheres the jester, I could do with some pointless nonsense right about now

I just watched Sospiria and found it rather underwhelming.

I feel like a piece of poo poo because everyone keeps saying that it's a masterpiece of the genre and I am probably totally wrong.
Here's what I wrote about it in the Horror Movie Challenge thread:

quote:

While I liked most the horrors that I have watched, I have not actually a whole lot of experience with horror; I have in fact not watched a whole lot of staples of the genre. I intend to fix that over the course of this month.

And maybe my lack of taste on the subject really shows, because I just watched Suspiria, which is apparently a gem of the genre and it left me rather unimpressed.

One of my gripes is the main character, who spends most of the film passively being explained what is going on by other students and is generally a bland, uninspiring heroine who is hard to care bout. I realize that the maxim "show, don't tell" isn't quite as ironclad when it comes to horror, where the implied and the mysterious are paramount, but I really felt unsatisfied by the quantity of dead air in the film.

But far worse is the way the film seems to flop around without a plot, without stakes; we see plenty of weird things happen in the film, but while some of them seem to have a logic behind them (the pianist challenges a member of the coven, and has his own dog assault him) others seem to have no purpose but to add some shock factor to the film (the maggots raining into the dormitory, and possibly the dog assaulting the kid, although I guess that could have been just the dog being aggressive; but if that was the case, why does the pianist insist that the dog is a peaceful animal? And why does the film seem to imply that something supernatural is at work?).
There was a lot of dead air throughout the movie, and when something does happen, during the tense scenes, it's often accompanied by this sound like a metal rod hitting a empty metal crate, which I guess is supposed to be underlining how upsetting the situation is but that I found distracting and irritating.

This is a shame because the tense scenes were rather nice and well-constructed. I also like the atmosphere of the setting, very opulent and with an undercurrent of teenage drama that wasn't really developped but helped keep the film grounded. The special effects were also perfectly serviceable (with the exception of the bat), considering that this movie was made in the '70s. The gore had an impact without being a splatterfest, and the corpse that the witch inhabits was very creepy... a shame for the way her outline suddenly appears for no reason, cheapening the resolution.

I am almost sure that I am missing something about this movie, because everyone seems to agree that it's a masterpiece, but if I had to give it a vote with based on my impression as of right now, it would be 5/10.

If anoyone could illuminate me on what exactly did I miss I would be really grateful.

Shucks folks, I'm speechless. Hawf Hawf Hawf!

So this October I planned out a party for an October double horror feature I'm calling Paul Blob Mall Blob, during which we will watch two of the famous Blob movies, the 80's horror remake of The Blob and Paul Blart Mall Cop. In preparation for this grand event I've created a prediction sheet contest in which everyone predicts what "Paul Blob" (The Blob and Paul are being treated as the same character for the sake of the contest) will do in his double feature adventures; from how many ladies he'll fall in blob with to how many awkward silences (and silent screams) he'll create with his antics. I've also been creating Paul Blobs to print and stick around the house for this momentous occasion as well as a Paul Blob figurine as a trophy for the winner.

..I feel as though I may have gone too far. But maybe not far enough.

For me, Suspiria grows with each viewing. The first time I was confused, but I could sorta see the appeal. I watched it again later and saw its logic better, and it's only gone up the more I watch it.

A lot of the appeal of Suspiria is the visuals, its not known for having all that compelling a plot. You said you don't have much experience with horror, I think if you watch more and more of it you'll find very few films that look anything like Suspiria. Its fairly unique in that way.

Yeah it's definitely casting a wide net but if you're up for some older stuff the 70's Invasion of the Body Snatchers is on Netflix, and that movie still creeps up on me to this day. Course the chances that y'all haven't already seen it might be slim. In which case The Babadook is a great one for the slow build suspense as well.

it's also worth noting that Suspiria is very much on offshoot of Giallo that could be said to have started its own genre of wild-rear end paranormal Italian horror.

for Argento in a (somewhat) more grounded mode, i'd recommend The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, a fairly straightforward but impeccably executed thriller which stands up with Blow Up or most Hitchcock that I could name, or Deep Red, which has much of the gore, hallucinatory imagery, and rear end-kicking music of Suspiria but grafted to a serial killer thriller/procedural.

Giallo is like that, but if you stick with it it seems to grow on you. I would recommend Deep Red or Tenebre as an entry point. Both are relatively coherent

I've watched some horror in the past few days, though I'm not doing the challenge because I doubt I'll make it to 31 this month.

1408 was better than I remembered, probably because the Scream Stream had the theatrical ending which I'd never seen, but now vastly prefer. I really like the reality-breaking aspects of the room and how it just fucks with him the whole time.

Also on the Scream Stream, Final Destination was WAY worse than I remember. Still like the concept, but death just comes off as mean in this one instead of an uncaring force of nature. And really, there's no reason death shouldn't just kill everyone via blood clot in their brain if it can creep water across the floor and set up Rube Goldberg contraptions. I think the 2nd one was a perfect mix of fun and grim.

I watched Willow Creek and didn't get much out of it. The long take in the tent was about the only effective and suitably intense scene (and also technically impressive since it's something like 20 minutes and mostly done with sound). The rest was nothing happening, and the shot of the woman before the end just raises more questions than answers, one of which being "that's it?" I get what they were going for, but being only 70-something minutes there easily could've been more to it. Pretty generic found footage aside from the tent scene, and even that's been done to a degree.
