McLaren were posting speed trap figures only a couple of kph off Hamilton's which given even in the last test week they were still 15+ kph off shows they have not just made massive improvement, but they could seriously be fighting for the top of F1 Category 2 (everyone but Merc). Still at least 1 second off joining Category 1 though, but then again so is every other team - especially given how strong Hamilton was in the practice sessions; this season does have already signs of being even more 1 sided than the previous 2. All unknown though until qualifying tomorrow, and many times Aussie practice sessions have been little help in showing how the qualifying actually plays out.

Australia usually throws a curveball, and it is very poor at demonstrating relative pace anywhere else. I didn't see FP2, but weren't both sessions affected by rain as well?

What I noticed last night, and really didn't realize it until I sobered up this morning, was that Button's car was bottoming out and bouncing around in FP1. They're still very much just trying to figure out how to set up that car so there's some room for improvement.

They're running Red Bull levels of extreme rake now Prodromou's in charge, so they're going to bottom out a lot.

Fair few teams had serious problems with handling on turn 14 with either wild under or over steer. Only ones I didn't see have a problem were Ferrari/Mercedes.

Weren't they not running certain engine upgrades during testing that they were waiting for Australia for? I tend to agree that they didn't find a bunch of performance overnight, but I thought I remembered them saying something about saving the race spec engine for after testing for some reason.
