Here's the naughty beast in question: In this picture she has just come out of the shower and is posing on top of a cage she never went into (hand towels are much better nests) in front of our lounge room's horrifying dark blue corduroy curtains. She is probably planning how to steal some of my dad's port and deciding whose fingers she will bite first.

Echo likes to sit as near to me as she can in the cage- the cage is right by my computer. She royally loses her poo poo if I do anything with my hands, though. Maybe if I just buy her love with treats? I just don't want to hurt her. Fuji was so easy to hand train- even now that he's gotten a little more flighty having Echo in with him he still steps up like a champ.

Putni has been moved to the travel cage. It was painful for both of us, and I sincerely hope he didn't suffer any injuries from flapping panicked around the cage. Pion should be manageable. Departure for vet in 20 minutes. I hope my ears will survive the 50 minute drive.

Vet agreed Putnis feathers looked somewhat bad. Putni had a blood sample taken. He was not happy about it. I should get a lab response in a week.

All the best for you and birbs. PBFD doesn't sound like the likely culprit, going on everything mentioned-maybe instead a vitamin deficiency or an issue along those lines. You could try playing radio/white noise/rainfall or something to block out the shrieking a bit if they start. Poor potato.Tendai posted:I was getting rid of excess pictures on my phone and I found this outtake from Judah's birthday photoshoot: Sociopastry posted:Is it bad that I'm considering not hand taming Echo? She seems super, super stressed if I even put my hands in the cage, even if it's just to replace food. I don't want to make her sick like Hara, and she's got Fuji for affection and play. Is it bad to just let her be or do I need to hand train her? If she's happy and healthy then not bad at all-though it's definitely worth trying to get her tamer, even if only to lower stress in some situations! And budgie buddy

Guys unfortunately I've been done with the flu last week, and I haven't taken Goose, my GCC out of his cage for socialization the last 48 hours. I religiously take him out every day, most days 90 minutes but even if I'm rushed for time I get 30 minutes in twice a day. I know 48 hours isn't going to turn him wild...but someone just tell me please I'm not damaging my bird.

Honestly this sounds like a very good starting place to be and given that she is still young I really think you should stick with trying to hand tame her. If she is clearly invested in you and what you're doing it should be possible to very slowly introduce her to your hands outside of the cage. I would start with treats that give you a little distance from the cage, like a millet spray you hold up to the bars. Try to minimize scary hand interactions whenever possible. Birds do not understand hands at all and on top of that she is still pretty new to your home so she likely does not fully trust you yet. See if you can get your hands closer if they are in sleeves, this worked for us with Griddle who was initially extremely hand-shy (esp. for a hand fed conure ) Mr.Boofu posted:Guys unfortunately I've been done with the flu last week, and I haven't taken Goose, my GCC out of his cage for socialization the last 48 hours. He'll probably be a little rude to you for a couple of days, but if you've got the flu it's probably best to keep him up anyway as birds are susceptible to some strains of influenza Mirthless fucked around with this message at 17:11 on May 11, 2016 |

Every time I scrub down his cage, which is once per week. I rotate treats and veggies/apples too. He seems normal. I am going to take him out today since I feel better.

Do you guys have any suggestions for games I could play with my hand-shy GCC? I want to socialise her more, because I'm worried she's lonely but she won't let me come close or put my hands near her yet.

Ive never had to tame a quaker, it really sounds like a not smart bird thing but then you have to tame conures too.

Peekaboo and other sight-and-sound games are what you want. Sing to the bird and mimic its sounds. Try dancing as well. Also always say hi and goodbye. Ask it questions, have a conversation, etc. Interact as much as possible. Interaction leads to trust, which is what will make hands ok E: Also what Tendai said about actual hand training

I assume you accidentally teach them swear words to repeat at inappropriate times for the next 20-80 years, while they teach you to accept dealing with cuts and scratches on your hands.

As a non-bird-haver, I am curious. If you have two birds, one hand-tame and one not, can the untame one sort of learn by watching? Sort of a "holy poo poo, that guy steps on the finger and then BAM HE GETS A BLUEBERRY! I love blueberries! COME HERE MAGIC BLUEBERRY FINGER!" type of thing?

I think it would depend on how smart the birds in question are. Sammy, the GCC, has learned quite a few things from Kiwi the Nanday. Mostly eating with feet but also how to play with more toys. Soooo.....maybe?

The last couple weeks were exceptionally hot and dry for spring around here, so the birbs are getting more showers than usual. Usually they stop when my misting bottle is half-empty. This time they didn't want me to stop after the whole bottle was gone. Also check out this magnificent bastard from the Saskatoon Berry Farm near Calgary. He jumped up to that board(about 2m off the ground), but was afraid to jump back down. About 15 minutes later he finally worked up the courage to jump down.

I don't see American turkeys much. Good god, that face is something special A turkey's face makes it seem like they would fit in as a sci-fi alien race. Here are our Australian Brush-'turkey's (no actual relation to the American ones). They love messing up footpaths by digging mulch out onto them.

The ones back where I lived a year or two ago where very helpful in that they liked taking junk mail and taking it to their nests (or just strewing it all around artistically).

When offering treats from my hands, Pion is generally all over it, while Putni will only approach carefully after seeing that Pion is actually chewing it down happily. Apart from that it seems to do very little.

I'm a non-bird-haver who lurks here cause I like bird but a lot of taming bird talk makes me feel better about it having taken six months for one of my cats to let me pet her (and I still have to pet her in such a way that she never sees a hand moving towards her and gets spooked). It's been a very similar process of getting her used to my presence and making treats rain from my hand.

Crows Everywhere is from here too, she goes to QUT I believe. I feel bad for the groundsmen there, they spend so much time cleaning up through Turkey season for no gain at all. They are redoing that garden near Parnell and you just know the turkeys are waiting to destroy it.

Yes and no, in my experience-they learn that maybe the human isn't so scary, that it provides tasty things, etc and they seem to have a sense of "fairness" which I use a lot. One bird bites, the other bird might get something for no bite. One yells, the other might get something for being a good quiet bird. They seem to change their immediate behaviour pretty fast when they see the other bird/s getting something that they don't have but for conures/cockatiels/etc I'm not sure how much they can understand learning that way. Certainly Greys etc can, but I think at best it will just make the untame bird more chill around you

I love my birds so much. I love just sitting and watching them. They're such characters. There's one part of their cage that used to hold an extra food dish, but now is just an empty holder thing and they loving love it. Fuji likes to try to open it, and Echo loves to sit on it and do flips around the base of it. So cute.
