Speaking of which does anyone really enjoy Mayhem? Their first EP was kind of cool but after that I couldn't get into anything. There are just a lot more Norwegian Black Metal bands that are so much better imo (Emperor, Darkthrone)

De Mysteriis dom Sathanas is great

Why don't you perform zazen, facing a wall?
There is no Mayhem studio album that I like very much. Even De Mysteriis does not impress me when you compare it to any of the other big name Norwegian bands of the day. However I went to see them in concert last year and they really were very enjoyable. The only recording I've heard that captures what I like about them is Live in Leipzig. It's hilariously rough and full of fuckups, but it conveys the energy of how they performed a lot better. Dead sounds really good also, for whatever value of "good" you like in a black metal vocalist. The performances on De Mysteriis sound weak and tinny by comparison.

I really liked DMDS back when I was first getting into black metal, but I haven't been able to get into anything they've released since then. Hellhammer was my favorite extreme metal drummer for a while, but then I read some interviews with him, which isn't always the best idea when it comes to black metal musicians of that era.

I was on the fence about whether or not to get tickets for too long, so I didn't manage to snag any before they sold out. I'm sad about missing out on King Diamond, but since I caught Black Sabbath the last time they were here, there's really nothing else on the program that I'm dying to see.

WULKAMANIA WILL NEVER DIE
DMDS will always be Mayhem's greatest. Live With Leipzig and any bootleg you can find with Dead on vocals is also worth seeking out. Deathcrush EP is ok, has it's moments but I always saw it as an attempt by the band to emulate the brazilian "death thrash" of bands like Sarcófago but at the same time having nothing to do with the black metal sound they would move on to. When they put out Wolf's Lair Abyss it just wasn't Mayhem anymore. Since then they've done nothing very memorable, occasionally when it was time for a new Mayhem album I would hear a sample and think "well this actually sounds kinda cool, maybe I'll give this a shot" only to be let down again.

Amon Amarth are excellent live, King is my favorite artist, and I'm pretty excited about Abbath, Blind Guardian and of course Sabbath. Not going to be bad seeing Converse, Dropkick Murphys or Alice Cooper, either.

I'm a fan of all Mayhem until they released Ordo Ad Chao. I was super addicted to Chimera for a while even though when I was younger I hated the drum sound. Ordo Ad Chao sucked rear end to me and Esoteric Warfare is bullshit. Everything prior is loving good though.

I have pretty much given up hope of modern thrash holding my attention for any period of more than thirty seconds.

Are there any modern thrash bands out there that can replicate that no-holds-barred, ruthless aggression that made me fall in love with thrash in the first place? I'm talking bands like Razor, Demolition Hammer, old Slayer, old Kreator, Sodom, and so forth.

The only "modern" band that ice found to give me that same feeling is Antichrist, but other than them I'm extremely hard-pressed to find any others that make me want more.

These names may be familiar but:
Ripper, Inculter, Sadistic Ritual, Sauron, Occult Burial.

Sauron and Occult Burial are more black thrash but that tends be where you have to go for the more unhinged stuff.

And for something more crossover, there's the very much lacking in material Expander.

I'm already familiar with Ripper who, well, rip really hard. Inculter has definitely got my foot tapping, and I even uttered out a "yeeeaaaahhhhh!" once I heard the first riff after the intro. I liked Sadistic Ritual, but I have a feeling that I'd dig them more live than on record, but I'll probably buy the record you linked. I've heard of Sauron, but for some reason never checked them out. I really like their raw style that they went for. Occult Burial is another one that gave me that same reaction as Inculter, but I shouldn't be surprised since just about everything Invictus Productions puts out is gold. Expander is great, it's like Harm's Way if they did crossover. Good post, friend.

I hope this was a joke post because this sounds like every local band that wants to play thrash metal. Bands like this, Warbringer, and Bonded by Blood are what I hate about thrash nowadays. It's just so... plastic.

Exarsis is the best of these three. Ultra-Violence's schtick got old quick with me and I think I'd like Chronosphere live, but that's about it.
