Active pursuit by a girl is also never rewarded, so she's doomed there, too.

My life's work will be to create a single equation that can always identify the girl a shounen romcom protagonist will end up with.

the reason the first girl usually wins is because the story usually introduces the heroine before all the romantic foils. that's only true for shounen romance manga, though. for shounen fighting manga, romantic foils frequently appear before the special heroine shows up dramatically.

Which manga series is similar to Blue Exorcist? I've read FMA, Black Clover, HxH, Souleater (before it went bad) and various popular shounen already. I like the more gender balanced cast and how the girls have their own goals other than being the LI of the MC(s). FWIW: I don't like extreme fanservice/gore. It's not that great with the female characters, but it also doesn't have too much fanservice or anything.

Yeah they're pretty good, but iirc, you'll get major mood whiplash when reading the tank extra chapters, since their fun wackiness almost always directly follows some kind of big dramatic cliffhanger.

I just like the art more in BE despite how much a disappointment of S2 ended up. However, I wonder if they will do a remake anime when the series is complete like FMA:B Also, it feels weird that only 9 months have passed in their universe esp since the manga started back in 2011. It doesn't look like it'll be ending soon either but I hope it won't drag itself to death like Magi. Basically, I miss FMA a lot and Silver Spoon along with Arslan aren't as interesting compared to it. There's a few other series I am following that haven't fallen into hiatus hell but it looks grim (RIP DGM). Did anyone read Yamada and the Seven Witches? I stopped around CH 100 and since it's complete I wonder how it ended. Alder fucked around with this message at 14:46 on Apr 22, 2017 |

Oh people think Magi is dragging itself out to death? That's fair. I only just caught up to it after years. There were ups and downs, parts I had to slog through to get to parts I loved, I liked the evil wizard stuff, and when it looked like there'd be a trading company arc but it was mostly breezed over. Like if anything I wish the author would settle down, slow down, maybe give us another cool arc getting into a different country. My problem is that it felt like they were rushing towards the end, continually leaning in the more "cosmic" and pseudo philosophical direction and just making everything bigger and bigger. I wanted more dungeons, more adventuring, more world fleshing out, less gibberish and Djinn Equip battles (I'm sure they look cool in the anime but tbh reading the manga not a single one really ever enthused me, most of them just look messy to me, like just transforming into having a bunch of poo poo on you...the designs always felt too "busy" on the page for me and not really creative/original enough even for shonen). Like for example when Alibaba came back, I thought the manga ka would have a whole trading/mercantilism arc, in that way you often see authors go "hmmm I have some vague knowledge about this specialized area, time to make an arc about it while discussing it in the broadest of terms". And like, they kinda did, but it was mostly breezed and rushed through so they could get to more gibberish about self determination and giant GOD level poo poo. It just felt like at a certain point the series was just continually ramping and rushing to the end. I wanted more before the scale got all ridiculous. Really enjoyed the Wizard hitler arc.

I've started checking out Twin Star Exorcists and it'S alright but it has completely terrible fights, where they throw big beams at each other for no effect and the bad guys are all arrogant bastards who no-sell everything until they get hit by a beam big enough. I really hate that style of no creativity or flow in battles.

Yeahhhhhh, I guess you're right, it just felt like balbabadd or whatever and the wizard country were the only ones they explored in interesting ways or in real depth...like we got a bit of Rome and then flashed away, and we only got The Kou Empire through those nomads and post-fall of the Soviet Union so to speak (which I liked, like I said I thought the trading company arc would like, be a thing). I feel like some self indulgent Oda style further recursive fleshing out wouldn't hurt. Like when he tried to pull a One Piece move (and it's usually stupid when even Oda does it) and he went "hey remember that random whiny Roman dude well here he is again in a vitally important role..." but it didn't really work for me cuz we never really got to get a closer look at Not-Rome's society. Like reading through Alibaba's country arc to Sindria to Wizard Country I got this impression that Magi would be this fun interesting exploration of different societies with various problems and injustices and the proper way to rule and so forth...and it kind of was but then it wasn't anymore and it was all big dumb god characters with big dumb god ideas. None of the King Solomon flashback background stuff ever really clicked with me. It was a slog tbh Is the Sinbad manga better at hitting those sweet spots & having more dungeon exploring? I feel like it's sad we never had anything like that classic first dungeon again, really. Kind of, a few times like with Zagan, but not quite.

The Sinbad manga is certainly a lot more like early Magi, if that's what you want. Sinbad travels a bunch of places while collecting his djinn and generals.
