Get a sony rx100. That's a camera your wife will actually use.

I have bought several cameras for my wife.

A couple years ago my wife said she wanted a nice camera to take pictures of the kids and take along while traveling. She had no interest in shooting anything manual, and wanted a DSLR. I was pushing her hard to get a Fuji mirrorless, because she was essentially treating it as an expensive point and shoot and I feel like her use case was better suited for a mirrorless than a DSLR. I couldn't convince her, and we ended up getting a Nikon D3200.

As it turns out, exactly what I expected to happen happened. We barely use it, because it's big and heavy and hauling it around with 2 kids and all their gear is a pain. It also is really crappy in low light situations, and the autofocus especially struggles there.

Now we're back to thinking about a mirrorless. I'm looking at Fujifilm stuff, because they are well recommended and I like how they look. Me as a know-nothing who reads things on the internet and expects to shoot a lot of portrait type photos has the idea that the 16-50mm kit lens is the one I want.

The decision is made more difficult on which body to get. Adorama has the X-A10 for $500, the X-A3 for $600, and the X-T10 for $700.
3 cameras with identical lenses in increments of $100

It looks like the key feature differences between the A10 and the A3 are the 180 degree rotating screen and the 24 MP sensor compared to the 16 MP sensor (bigger numbers is better).
The T10 adds to the A3 a viewfinder and ????
It looks like the A3 is probably the right one for us and the best cost/feature value for me. Is there anything I'm missing?

Also, I'm thinking based on ebay/craigslist postings I can probably get $300-ish for the old Nikon, which softens the cost of this upgrade. Any tips on where or how to sell a camera?

I think it would be better to reason with her that even on these she is going to have to set it to something other than full auto to get a decent image more than just a time or two by sheer "luck". If she is unwilling to switch there is literally no point to getting something more expensive than a basic point and shoot (at most, a Sony RX100).

Fuji raws are perfectly fine in Lightroom now. Even the film simulations are pretty much spot on. The only problem is that there's no way to easily simulate the in-camera shadow and highlight settings once you import them. However, I've tried making curves presets that match by directly comparing to the JPEG, and I got pretty close.

Speaking as a happy X-T2 owner, this isn't -entirely- true. I still get the X-Trans watercolory wishy-washiness in Lightroom. It only shows up when you look at things at the pixel level, and even then not always, so it's not really an issue. And now that the sensors are 24 megapixels, it's even less of a thing. But it's disingenuous to say that it doesn't happen.

Fuji raws are MUCH better than they used to be but they are not as good as something like Iridient Developer and if you compare jpgs to raws in Lightroom you will certainly see a difference. Normal people wouldn't, I mean photo peepers would. And the film simulations are close but not exact which sets off my ocd detail control issues.

If you have a Mac then Iridient Developer is a great option. If you are a plebe like me (I have an old MacBook Pro but my PC and laptop are light years better then the MacBook) Iridient has a raw converter that you can use although it is barebones. They have a trial too so it is worth checking out.

All that said, though, there is no reason to stay away from Fuji because of the raws being a pain to deal with in Lightroom. These are really obvious differences only for those who are looking for them and seriously most people would never notice.

It is frustrating that they partnered with garbage like silkypix though. I wish that I could use Lightroom and really get the same output that I can get out of camera or out of Iridient.

The other day I found this post that has some suggested for Fuji presets based on mimicking styles of famous photographers. They might be a little aggressive for everyday shooting, but I am eager to test them out.

All simulations are set to DR: AUTO, Noise -3, Grain: Off and Sharpness -1 unless stated otherwise.

Chrome Eggleston

Origin: Based on William Eggleston's sombre but beautiful rich colour work using the old Kodachrome.
Intent: Whenever I want a rich, warm and nostalgic feel, this is the one to go for. Also surprisingly good for dystopian brutalist architecture. A good all-rounder.

Film Simuation: Classic Chrome
Grain Effect: Off
Highlight Tone: +2
Shadow Tone: +2
Colour: -2

Provia Sternfeld

Origin: Designed to have the colours matching reality, with low contrast. Matches the sort of look used in the New Topographics movement that Sternfeld helped pioneer.
Intent: Capturing that oddly beautiful banality of empty urban spaces.

Film Simulation: Provia
Highlight Tone: -2
Shadow Tone: -1
Colour: -3

Acros Ellen Mark

Origin: That beautiful B&W documentary 35mm work that Mary Ellen Mark was famous for.
Intent: The go-to Acros simulation. Perfect for documentary, portrait and fashion.

Film Simulation: Acros Yellow Filter
Highlight Tone: +2
Shadow Tone: 0

Acros Moriyama

Origin: Based on the look that now legendary Japanese street photograph Daido Moriyama was famous for.
Intent: Anything grungy, raw and primal from gig photography to night-time urban. Also a wildcard for any situation to jolt me out of complacency.

Film Simulation: Acros Red
Dynamic Range: DR100
Highlight Tone: +4
Shadow Tone: +4

Acros Winogrand

Origin: Great American street-photographer who documented the increasing conformity of 70's suburban America.
Intent: Going back in time using a machine to document the increasing conformity of 70's su... no, wait. Er, not sure. But I've always loved Winogrand. Urban street work in good light.

Film Simulation: Acros
Highlight Tone: -2
Shadow Tone: -2

Pro Neg LaRoque

Origin: Known mainly for working the Classic Chrome and Acros, Fujifilm X-Photographer LaRoque is something of a modern inspiration for me and my blog. He once knocked my socks off with what he did with a series of very soft, slightly ethereal Pro-Negative portraits, which I'd never considered before.
Intent: Portraits. Also a flat profile to work off if I ever want flexibility with a base of great skin tones and colour accuracy.

Film Simulation: Pro Negative
Grain Effect: Weak
Highlight Tone: -2
Shadow Tone: -2
Colour: -1
Sharpness: -4

Velvia Bulmer

Origin: I don't think John Bulmer, the great British photographer, ever actually shot Velvia. But his inventive documentary colour work possessed a remarkable vibrancy.
Intent: Bulmer's Northern industrial scenes remind me that Velvia isn't just for the Steve McCurry jaunts through India, but for really bringing out spashes of colour in otherwise dour scenes - hence mainly urban shooting with a bit of nature when all the colour isn't too overpowering.

Film Simulation: Velvia
Grain Effect: Weak
Highlight Tone: -2
Shadow Tone: +2
Colour: -2

I like the idea of this for something light and small. Some of their photos show it being used with big DSLRs and long lenses, and I can only imagine how fast I'd get tired of my lens slapping against my arm/chest.

Who can tell me why on a Fuji (x-t2 came in) when you set a minimum shutter speed of say 1/60th in auto iso settings you'll still end up with the viewfinder suggesting that you're about to shoot slower than the minimum you just specified?

Because the auto ISO minimum shutter speed is for the minimum the camera will set without increasing the ISO not the absolute minimum.

The T10 is previous generation small professional/semipro model and the A models are current gen bottom of the market consumer cameras. The only improvement from T->A will be in the sensor but unless you really know your stuff there is no way you will notice. The T10 will be better in every other way.

As for lenses get the XF 18-55 F2.8-4 its a wayyyyy better lens than the XC 16-50. XC lenses are plastic consumer models while the XF models are 'proper' lenses. 'Portrait' lenses are the 52/1.4 and 50/2 but they are expensive and specialised.

Get a X-T10 or a cheap X-E2/E2s and the XF 18-55.

For a basic rundown on Fuji cameras.
Xpro/E1: old do not get as they were before the kinks had really been ironed out of the series.
A/M models are consumer grade cheap cameras, agenerally avoid.
E2/E2s/E3: Rangefinder style semi-pro cameras, a nice mddle ground.
T10/T20: Compact semi-pro camera's generally a very good choice.
T1/T2/Pro2: Top of the line Professional kit with all the bells and whistles.

LOL there is no XE3.

XT10-XT20 basically replaced the XE line because SLR shape body is more popular than rangefinder shaped body,

You only need to look at the body listed price to figure out its target audience. The difference between the listed and actual price will tell you how old it is.

There is nothing wrong with the XA series. They are also lighter.

As they drove, rough ideas started to form around what the merging of these two passions would look like. As with all good and long discussions, the questions got deeper and more heart driven until they unearthed the very question that would shape this new company's vision...

Would being able to personalize ones camera help invigorate a passion within a photographer to take more pictures, and better yet, fall in love with the act of picture making?
