How can you hate sport anime in a world with Ping Ping?

It's odd to single out Chihayafuru as the only good sports anime. A lot of it plays out in line with traditions of the genre, it just happens to be a very solid execution of said traditions.

I mean it's all the fun of watching a professional sports game, minus the professionals, and with added highschool drama. What's not to like?

I love when people talk about Chihayafuru like "it's not really about the sport!" when like 90% of the show is karuta. It's very very good so I can understand why people love it who don't usually like sports anime but it's also sports anime as hell

yeah I was sold it on the premise that the karuta isn't a huge part of it and can be safely ignored. Bull-loving-poo poo, it envelops the series. March Comes in Like a Lion however, hits that perfect sweet spot where it's got plenty of non-sports stuff going on that it's still totally enjoyable without paying attention to the shogi bits.

For one, I thought Chihayafuru plays out more like a shoujo anime than a sports anime. For two, other sports anime never seems to really capture what I like about sports. They tend to just put some random sport in, maybe do some research into it, and say "well that should be good enough." Chihayafuru actually managed to capture that feeling. As opposed to most sports anime that, to me, feel like watching a less interesting shounen battle anime, it brought back memories of being out on the mat wrestling. It's similar to the reason why I think Remember the Titans was trash but that The Blindside and The Longest Yard were both excellent. I mean, I like the karuta parts because I feel the show does a very good job of drawing you into why these characters are doing it in the first place and how they organically start to gel as a team. If that were all it had to offer then yeah it probably would just another run of the mill sports anime, because plenty others also do that well, though often with a prevalence of gimmicks (see, every Hajime no Ippo opponent) which is something Chihayafuru has mostly lacked so far. Mostly. That team of foreigners and the "calculate all moves in their heads as probabilities" or whatever nerd team in the second season were a bit silly. What set it apart were the exemplary characters and dramatic story beats, which I mostly attribute to the story's Josei origins.

Great characters and storytelling isn't some exclusive to Josei thing lol.

I might make that argument in the context of sports anime/manga, though.

AnoHito posted:For one, I thought Chihayafuru plays out more like a shoujo anime than a sports anime. Shounen-y battle is just one flavor of sports anime out there. There are plenty of shows that are entirely different. Ping Pong being one lots will namedrop but there's also pretty much any Adachi work too, to name another; stuff like Cross Game and Touch definitely come across as written by someone with a passion for the sport while at the same time wanting to tell a very human story instead of just focusing on the matches.

Could I get some good animes on Netflix that aren't leaning into ecchi or harem? I just watched Sword Art Online after seeing some good reviews and I might be scarred for life so I could use a come-back. I already watched One Punch Man but now I'm afraid to try anything else because I'm a compulsive completionist even for stuff that turns out to be mildly terrible. I'd also prefer to avoid bloodpornish stuff like Attack on Titan and Gantz.

Durarara and Mushishi are both really soild, apparently Silver Spoon is on there too. It's a fun little show about a guy who goes to an agricultural high school in Hokkaido, lots of adventures in animal husbandry and making bacon and cheese and stuff

I'll check out Durara, Madoka Magica, and Kukumokokopuffs probably for starters. I should've mentioned I just watched Silver Spoon, and it is indeed awesome. I actually watched Gurren Lagann way back, and the fanservice in that one didn't seem too bad. I guess because the whole thing is so ridiculous that the fan service just blends into the cacophony.
