Here's something I found under my own house today! This isn't a distorted image or taken at an oblique angle. This is the drain for the currently only working bathtub in my house. The other bathroom is gutted and being rebuilt, but the drain in the shower in that bathroom was every bit as bad and was leaking to boot. Hell, the kitchen sink had something similar going on, I tore it out and put in all new stuff, with no upward angles. The previous owner was an old plumber, and you'd think that he'd have done better than this horseshit. But nah, too much effort to get it right, I guess. This is a 60 year-old house with 60 year-old house issues. The previous owner contributed so many problems to this place that it's already staggering to think about. It's just one more goddamn thing on my exceedingly long list of things to deal with.

Should we be concerned about these joists maybe? Hard to tell for sure but it looks a little bit like maybe someone has hacked out three or four chunks of joist/entire ends of joists in a row?

I was so fixated on the lovely drain I didn't take a look at those. I'll be back down there in the very near future, I'll take a closer look. That's be a pretty drat serious concern for me if it's hosed up. Fortunately I have no plans to put a bathtub on those beams, but I won't leave it alone if I have to take action.

It's like that Liberty Ship that was built in a week instead of the normal 50 days (because they didn't count the time taken to prefab the parts they spent the week plugging together like an oversized Lego set).

I've watched an embarrassing number of those "tiny house tour" videos on youtube, and get some pretty great recommended videos for this thread. My current fave is a couple living in a shed on skids who built a "storage ladder" for their girls to get up to the sleeping loft. Except instead of building something like this: they opted to used their own chainsaw milled lumber. I'm guessing the dimensions are 2 1/4 x 12? The ladder looks to be a nice comfortable 80 degrees, and holds one entire row of cans (but not tall cans) on each "rung" Video for anyone interested.

It looks like they tilted the steps too, like, they're perpendicular to the stretchers but the stretchers aren't perpendicular to the ground, so the steps are slanted inwards.

seriously though what good is that railing gonna do anyone? if you're walking down the stairs it's like mid-calf-height at the top, it's probably more of a tripping hazard than safety feature and if it's a tiny little 4 foot ceiling attic area, does not 'crawling down a flight of stairs' seem like a poor idea
