I'm guessing theres a 90% chance that the toilet drain necks down into the original 1.5" stub that obviously served a sink at one point.

I refuse to believe that this is a real room and not some rendering of a DIY goon's worst nightmare. And I too noticed the Fancy Word Squares before the en-suite bathroom.

That's an architectural feature of the Craftsman style. Wood floors, wide baseboards and door trims too. It's pretty common in houses built in the 1890-1920 era.

Also the whole bit where failing to update the address of their tax attorney left them with a nine hundred dollar unpaid tax bill and these rich assholes are going to face an actual consequence for that. Exactly like how millions of poor people get totally hosed for minor discrepancies on a daily basis, because the government has zero sympathy and does not just accommodate you after the fact when you failed to pay a bill or whatever. They're not going to face anything. City'll end up voiding the sale and returning their money most likely. Even if they let the idiots who bought it keep it, it's a street in a century old neighborhood, every house on it is going to effectively be granted easements to the whole property.

Or heck it's 2017 why not do triple glazing. My mother's old place was built sometime in the 1800s and it had double windows (I guess the additional pane is called a storm window in English?). I'm not trying to say small windows aren't inherently a better technical solution to heat loss because they obviously are. Complete windowlessness is even better. But both aesthetically and psychologically normal-sized windows are miles better. *) Liquid Communism posted:That's an architectural feature of the Craftsman style. quote:Traditional storm windows and screens are time consuming and very labor-intensive, requiring removal and storage of the storm windows in the spring, and reinstallation in the fall and storage of the screens. The weight of the large storm window frame and glass makes replacement on upper-stories of tall buildings a difficult task requiring repeatedly climbing a ladder with each window and trying to hold the window in place while securing retaining clips around the edges. How can you do something so utterly wrong? You put them on the inside of the house. Takes about five minutes per pane if you factor in sealing them with cotton and tape. Once a year.

Once a year. annoying pedant/ my parent's Cape Cod, built just after WWII, has wood double-hung windows. Up until about 1988, the storm windows were large wood units casing a single sheet of 1/8" glass (there was a matching set of screens as well). These were hung on lugs from the outside and secured with swing hooks inside. Each one had a little stamped-metal number plate that corresponded with a matching plate on each window. They were a giant pain in the rear end to install & remove. My mom eventually had storm-window units installed in 1989. /annoying pedant My house was built around 1930 and still has the original double-hung windows. I have restored them; sure, they're not as tight as a modern insulated unit, but they do surprisingly well coupled with a decent storm window unit (all of which I replaced).

The former owner of my home turned the garage into a sunroom with huge single pane windows, and yes it gets cold as gently caress in the winter. We just put curtains up to keep the cold air from spreading through the house. What I'd really like to do is get Indow window inserts but I'd have to scrape the cash together first.

Windows have a positive r value, but a significantly lower r value than actual insulation and thus let a lot morethermal energy through than other building materials.
