I don't know, I always thought they were pretty cool toys but not very useful for actually making anything useful. Getting bored and staring at a computer and writing some code to generate a 3D model then shooting it off to your printer and having it fart out that very same model is basically the closest feeling to being an Actual Wizard that I think is possible with current technology. "I made that thing! I thought of it and summoned it into being!"

Probably 80% of the stuff I use mine for relates to tradgames stuff either directly or indirectly, though.

I don't know anyone with a 3D printer and pretty much all of my friends are video gamers, many of them board gamers. A couple engineers in there.

I might have read this wrong (because it sounds like a dumb requirement), but when you level up do you HAVE to swap in a new card? Either from your new level or one of your old ones?

I'm thinking that every scenario you can make whatever hand you want from your unlocked cards, right?

Correct. You unlock a new card, at new level or lower, then each scenario you form a hand of your max card limit of your whole card pool.

Does anyone have any experience playing Music Note in 4-person groups? Basically all advice I see on it is for the damage build that everyone has gone gaga over but I really like the support options the class has (and it's clearly designed as a support first and foremost) and it seems like the damage build both requires smaller parties and specific items to be worth a drat. My big question is basically which buff songs seem the most useful for large groups (the +1 damage seems a lot more valuable, but +1 Shield still seems king since there's more damage sources)? Are there any real must-take cards? The bottom of that one level 4 song that blesses all nearby allies and curses all nearby enemies seems crazy when it can potentially hit a huge number of targets in a 4p game.

Is everyone's "open this if you deserve it" envelope under the black default insert? I wouldn't have found it if not for installing my Broken Token insert. I wonder if at some point in the game everyone is told to look under there.

I played the Music Note as support and it is very good. Bless/curse and Strengthen abilities are all great. I would argue for swapping songs based on need - they all have their uses.

Retaliate or damage were my usual starting songs, or movement if you need to cover some ground. Heal is great vs poisoning or wounding enemies.

The song that gives enemies disadvantage is really good if you stack curses.

Is movement like D&D? You can do part of a move action, do an attack, and finish the move action? I read about doing hit and run attacks as the Mindthief so I hope that's the case.

Not unless a combination of cards gives you move before and after an attack. The Scoundrel can definitely do a but if that, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Mindthief did too.

Nope. You execute the entire card half, top to bottom, in your action. though some cards are like "Attack 1, move 2, attack 2" kind of thing.

One way you can do a hit and run (as any class) is this:

In one round, go on slow initative - move next to a monster and attack it.

On the next round, go fast. Hit the monster again, then run away.

You're effectively getting two turns in a row with that setup.

I'm a little unclear on how you decide which scenarios are unlocked. The rules say

No, in all cases, there's a New Location(s) box that tells you exactly which locations you've just unlocked. So, for example, in scenario 2, both locations 3 and 4 are listed there, so you unlock both.

For your nonspecific version, even if the story text implies it's only possible to do one or the other, you still unlock both/all locations as long as they're listed in that box. Usually, if they truly are mutually exclusive, global achievements will enforce that (so for example, location X has a requirement that global achievement A is incomplete and rewards global achievement B on completion, and location Y has a requirement that global achievement B is incomplete and rewards global achievement A on completion), but you still unlock both locations (and could play through the other location in casual mode, if you like). There is at least one exception to this, but then it spells out "Choose to unlock only one of the following:" in the New Locations box.

That rules text is there, at least in part, to address one specific scenario, which has a bunch of circled numbers in the text but no New Locations box (and hence doesn't unlock any new locations). In that particular case, you must have unlocked at least one of the circled locations previously, but were missing a global achievement necessary to actually do it. The scenario you just finished gave you that global achievement, and the numbers are there to remind you where to go next.

Nonspecific. Yes. You take 1 sticker and put it on your board. The other one is gone forever.

^^^^ Pretty sure that's wrong, unless it was changed for the second printing. Usually scenarios that end in a choice unlock both scenarios, then you "make" the choice by playing one or the other. Usually this leads you down different plotlines and advancing too far down a plotline might lock out the other, but you never have to make a choice on the spot.

Any scenarios unlocked will be in the "New Location(s)" brown box at the end of the scenario alongside the other rewards. Sometimes the plot text of a scenario will have the scenario number within a circle, that just indicates the story bit you just read is referencing that scenario, i.e. it's purely for flavor purposes. This by itself does not mean the scenario is unlocked, only the ones in the rewards section get unlocked.

Some scenarios might reference other scenarios but not unlock them.

Music Note spoilers:

I am currently playing it in a four person group. I started off as heavily support, primarily using Shield, Healing (for poison/wounding enemies, mainly), and the Wounding song for offense with shielded enemies. In my experience, the starting plus damage song isn't particularly useful - it only applies to one attack, or one target in a multi-target attack. It's a damage boost, but not nearly as good as shaving damage off everyone, or turning off the damaging statuses, or even adding multi-round damage to everything your friends hit. However, as you accumulate perks, your modifier deck becomes insane and you can dish out some crazy hits, so I've shifted to a much more damage oriented build over time.


In terms of must take cards, I'd say the disadvantage to all enemies song (one of your few support effects that helps you as well, and on average better defensively than one point of shield, especially if you're throwing out curses), Melody and Harmony (1) running two songs at once is crazy good if exhausting, 2) the bottom half move and strong ranged attack combo is also really useful). I've gotten a lot of mileage out of the move and ranged curse, the ranged triple stun/4 damage attack and push, the effect that strengthens all allies (you can enhance a bless on as well), and the bottom half of the curse song (multitarget ranged attack and curse). Just took the real plus damage song for hitting level 9, I bet that will be real nice.

Jesus there's a lot of poo poo in this box. It's a cinder block of fiddly little bits, and I can't think of a graceful system of organization for them, especially without getting a bunch of plano boxes and a file folder. Why did no one warn me you couldn't just use a bunch of baggies?

Gonna spend the evening figuring out how to set up the board and build characters and such. I'm exhausted just looking at this.

Bunch of planos and a file folder is honestly more elegant than it sounds.

Best option is probably dropping another $70+ on the Broken Token organizer.

Get one big plano box which can hold terrain bits which you will only need for setup.

Get a medium sized one for health markers and combat tokens and coins which only needs to sit next to the monster cards

Then I also have a tiny little one for status chits which get passed around the table a bit

Personally I grabbed an actual tackle bag like this - one box for 'stuff needed during an adventure', two boxes for monsters, one box for scenery and some of the smaller card decks you won't use that often. Some of the map tiles in the side pockets, monster cards in the top pocket which is protected by a rigid piece of material so they won't get bent. I still have to stick the bigger map tiles in the box itself but that's so much better than the alternative.

Before that I actually did use baggies, stuff like 'every human-looking enemy', 'every animal-looking enemy', 'every undead enemy', 'all those green fuckers', 'health and gold', etc.

Scenario 11 real cool, fighting your way through all the guards and archers with a legion of undead supporting you. Getting to the captain of the guard who proceeds to heal up everyone still standing while desperately trying to burst him down with what few cards are left just getting there before the poo poo we skipped catches up to us. Took a solid 3-4 hours, game is awesome. I for one welcome our new necromantic socialist utopia.

Yall weren't kidding about Black Barrow being hard. I got rocked. Is it generally recommended to replay it in casual until you're good enough to win, or is it better to just go to scenario 2? I'm leaning toward the former, because I'd rather get better immediately and I want to at least reach that chest in the back, but I could see an argument for powering through.

Regardless, I'm terrible with the cragheart. I need to reread those Imgur guides. Maybe I shouldn't be tanking with it in a two-player setup, but the spellweaver is just so fragile.

Has anyone other than SU&SD mentioned how good this manual is? It's answered every question I've had so far. Whoever put this together, they should be writing textbooks if they aren't already.

e: Are there any other good two-character combos with the spellweaver? The brute looks simple, at least, if I decide to shelve the cragheart for a minute while I learn the game.

Cragheart has a lot of health and healing, so if anyone should take the occasional hit it should be him.

Occasional hit, mind you. Between ranged attacks, obstacles, and status effects from both your characters you should look into how to reduce incoming damage.

Don't rush into the middle of a bunch of melee enemies, you'll lose a bunch of cards unless you have decent armor and used a shielding ability.

If you haven't beaten Black Barrow, I would recommend replaying it until you beat it. Also, you'd be replaying it in campaign mode, not casual mode. Are you playing solo, using the rule where you increase the difficulty by one for solo play? If so, you might consider ignoring that rule and playing on normal difficulty for now. Level 2 difficulty for level 1 characters is quite difficult, and you aren't experienced enough yet to really take advantage of the benefits of solo play.

No, that rule only applies to scenarios that you’ve passed. You keep all XP and gold for each failed attempt before you beat it, but once you do beat it you can’t play it casually anymore.
