Just wear the fucking mask, Bob

I don't care how many people I probably infected with COVID-19 while refusing to wear a mask, my comfort is far more important than the health and safety of everyone around me!

Time to print 1099's! (well it was the other day)

"Hey Bob, do you remember why we made all the sister companies have the same tax ID as the main company? We printed 1099's and noticed that, it's a problem."

Because you're using the same bank account for all the companies and that's how you tricked the ACH software into working.

"Oh yea, I remember that now. Can I change them and then print 1099's?"

Probably...but you better not try to make any payments during that time...

Over the last month or so, I've probably spent 20ish hours dealing with tax forms.

Thank you for making me feel so much better about that.

When 1099's are printed, one of the accounting associates takes them all and scans them back in so we have PDF copies.

I had only been working here about 4 months when I found out about this last year and immediately started a quest to fix this.

Three months later it all falls apart with a copy of a quote from the document processing application vendor for $3000 to export to PDF.

...What kind of clown-shoes operation is it that they can't just make a program that prints to pdf? (I know, I know, a greedy one)

Also, $3k might still be cheaper depending on how much that guy gets paid to scan poo poo over multiple years.

I'm not on the team that manages that server, but it's some sort of form generation software and has some secure printing features. The price quoted is also just a license fee to turn on an existing feature, not to install anything new.

I recommended just installing a 3rd party PDF printer application, but that was shot down. Oh well, I tried.

We're theoretically moving away from that system in the next 2-3 years

I just tell people that I'm only any good at breaking things, and if their problem happens to be resolved while I'm doing my breaking, it's a happy coincidence.

If you go the douche route ask them if they actually know how to do their <job title> using their same language and when they become offended let them know that's how you feel.

Actually don't do that. But its nice to imagine.

An interesting development: the CEO has yet another iPhone X (because he keeps smashing them in a fit of rage) and he asked Bill to set it up, but refused to give Bill his Apple ID password! In the past he hasn't hesitated to give Bill passwords for any and all of his services.

Now Bill is stuck in a Catch-22 because he can't complete the transfer from the broken phone to the new one without the password, but he also knows that the CEO is too impatient to stand by during the process to provide his password.

A DILEMMA!

Wasn't there a recruiter in the Bay Area that everyone had enjoyed working with? They've demoted my boss and specifically crafted his replacement's job listing to exclude me. They have zero requirements, aside from legal ones and ones they know I don't meet (college degree, previous management experience). The closest thing they have to IT in the requirements is that you have to have "an interest in the future of technology," it's so pathetically bad, and not even being considered after 9 years here is disheartening.

So, time to move on! Good thing Windows admins are so popular in the Bay Area :negative:

I played with a bit a year or two ago. It seemed ok, but overpriced for what we would use it for. If you have a lot of web apps with different logins, it might be worth it, but if your services will do SAML or something, it's probably unnecessary. The reverse proxy-ish stuff was interesting, but Office 365 does that now too, I just haven't really played with it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's poo poo now though. All these places have way too many developers for what their product is, and just end up making things bad so they have something to do.

At this point I've reconfigured nginx twice, the tomcat servers three times and scaled up/down the instances five times.

On the plus side our MSO team gave me access to our AWS console just now so I can do this myself with out having to ask them to scale them for me.

Not pissing me off: AP department at my old employer contacted me about bank information for ACH payment. Yay.

Also not missing me off: We get to leave a little early today because an exterminator is coming in.

All,

We had a customer bring in a unit that had cockroaches in it. To make sure we eradicate any of these from our building, tomorrow night we will have the exterminator treat for this bug.

We are asking for everybody to leave promptly at 4:30. We are doing this as a precautionary effort to protect everybody in our xyz Family. Plant one is the area being treated. We have a plan for the phones and will execute.

We will shut the fire doors between plant two and the operations floor. Shipping personnel will be protected, and we have notified the carriers to have them here by four as well.

We have been assured by the exterminator that we are all safe in this treatment for the bugs, but are being over protective to make sure as we are a Family and Caring.

Please make sure you inform your direct reports please.

At an old office, the office manager had scheduled some exterminators to spray some hippie bullshit ultra-sensitive no-smell stuff on a Friday after close. About a dozen people (in an office of about a hundred) complained of the same Monday morning.

The exterminators had had to reschedule, and nothing had been sprayed.

It's funny when this is partially true, a couple of weeks ago our Intranet site was being super flaky and being that no-one really touches it questions get asked. Particularly our internal tools guy piped up that he just ran a script on said Intranet's web server "But it definitely wouldn't have broken it" and was really adamant that it wasn't his fault.
