You're correct; first one is a black ratsnake and the second is a large and rather beat up black racer.

Well, this was kind of a gross/interesting thing. I thought I had 4 Cecropia moth cocoons. Turns out, I had about 40 Chalcid wasps chest-burstering out for Mother's Day. Nice Legs.

Can't remember if I posted these...

Also saw a whale and had a barred owl in an instant pot box.

went camping this last weekend and had the absolute privilege and treat to see a whole family (6+) wild buns running around and playing together at silflay. Full on leaping over one another and making little happy grunts as they just TORE around. unfortunately I couldn't get a great pic but man, what an amazing thing to see. buns are the best. look at these guys move!

A funny little mouse!
High summer temperatures have struck, critters abound. Haven’t had the time to go hiking but here are a couple of cool critters I’ve found in my day to day.

A rove beetle. Slick design!

Ground beetle, Carabus nemoralis I think.

Vespula vulgaris building a nest in a shed.

Big frog

Pretty blue for a fly guy, or whatever the kids say these days.

A bug.

Some sorta weevil, maybe the large pine weevil (Hylobius abietis)?

A bumblebee! They're the best!

Scary and ticklish and awesome to have one on your finger.

Look at them hairy legs! :3: Gave it some agave syrup on my hand because it seemed a bit down, later it flew off merrily when I took it outside. But I forgot to take any photos for identification, this was probably the best one for the markings. Location: Finland.

Noticed only when looking at the photos: is that some sort of parasite on its shoulder? :ohdear:

That's a mite, they're harmless to the bee and just like to hitch a ride between nests and flowers and suchlike :3: Iirc they actually help out with nest maintenance by eating random bee debris

Looks like Bombus pascuorum at a glance but I'm not very familiar with European species.

I'm about to build some carpenter bee traps because I got shitloads of them.

Is there anything better to to with these dudes than bake them in a trap? I don't want them burrowing into my structures. If there's a sacrificial log or something I can make I'm down for it.

Yes! There are many different kinds of hotels you can build, because certain bees prefer certain accommodations (they're very fancy), so just look up "carpenter bee hotels" and see what you get.

Good instincts.

Pretty sure that one is in a defensive stance which means it feels cornered and is ready to bite. Scary
