Night Lords is great because it’s two rock solid books of sympathizing with absolute monsters, then Talos takes charge and you see what horror the ‘honorable past’ he was always blabbering on about actually was. It’s amazing.

I literally just finished Helsreach and it is excellent but it sounds like he is asking for straight bolter porn and while it has that it isn't that. The Damnation of Pythos is pretty much Starship Troopers bolter porn 30k era. Damnation of Baal is 40k bolter porn against the 'nids.

Starship Troopers isn't bolter porn either. It's pretty much the best direct comparison that can be made.

Chris Wraight isn't up to the quality of Abnett or ADB, but he's very solid at writing good bolterporn and probably my number 4 author in the Black Library. Battle of the Fang or Wrath of Iron would be my recommendations.

Chris Wright did Watchers of the Throne which was both excellent and very much not Bolter porn

Yeah Eisenhorn is the go-to introduction suggestion because it ISNT incomprehensible super soldiers mowing down hordes of faceless enemies. I think the Dante series might be another good suggestion, but Helsreach is a masterpiece of the genre.

The Forge of Mars series has some Titanicus-like segments but it's not the primary focus IMO?

There's the new Wrath of the Imperator, which I haven't read, and Warlord : Fury of the God Machine which I found pretty mediocre.

So I’ve been out of the Black Library game for way too long. Regarding The Magos: where exactly does it fit in with the Eisenhorrn/Ravenor/Pariah series? I got as far as the last ravenor book when last I read the series, but I didn’t bother with Pariah since at the time it looked like Abnett was done with his BL deal so I didn’t want to start a series that wouldn’t have an ending.

Chronologically, it happens in between the end of Ravenor and the start of Pariah.

I feel like it should be read after Pariah, because it will spoil certain aspects of Pariah. However, Abnett's suggested reading order has it just before Pariah. So read it wherever you want, basically. It's pretty good.

As a note, it's a full length novel in and of its own, not a novella padded out to length with short stories.

Hey now, there were several parts of that book that were actually quite good. The scene with the Inceptors dropping into the fight from orbit, the whole deal with the calendars, the start where Guilliman got merked. I also enjoyed the bit where Guilliman was thinking about hiding the evidence of his Imperium Secundus existing.

So totally worth it if you’re happy reading a 300 page book for maybe 20-30 pages of decent content.

Honestly I've never understood why Imperium Secundus, and god I hate that clunky name, is supposed to be some terrible treachery.

Ultramar was completely cut-off, as far as he knew Terra and the Emperor could already have fallen. Of course you enact a continuance of government protocol. As soon as he learned that the Imperium was still standing, he immediately moved to aid it.

Guilliman did nothing wrong. :colbert:

I would also still appreciate some danger.

My understanding is that Bobby G was ashamed and embarrassed for thinking that the Imperium even could have fallen.

It's like gluten-free communion wafers. To an outsider they make perfect sense, but if you're extremely Catholic? What's wrong with you, don't you believe the doctrine of transubstantiation?

Guilliman did a bunch of things wrong, including throwing his life away against Fulgrim, losing a ton of his legion to the Word Bearers of all people and, and then not even showing up at Terra after deciding getting through the Ruinstorm was just too hard .

Wolfsbane kinda retconned that to Bobby g and the lion staying behind to tie up a large chunk of Horus’s forces so he can’t get reinforcements/supplies from the worlds he took. Which makes more sense than whatever the old fluff was, almost makes up for how painfully retarded the three of them going to davin and shooting kurze in a coffin out into space was.

Hi there, would you like to try some spicy products?

Instead of finishing the Beast Arises series, I've just delved back into re-reading the good books in the Horus Heresy.

On the one hand, I liked the Silent Sisters appearing, but all the ham-fisted plot twist and absolutely comical incompetence of the Imperium that keeps switching places with the deus-ex-machina invincibility/fallibility of the Orks was just a little much for me.

lol we've lost an entire chapter of marines and the apparent entirety of Imperial assets (oh, and Terra) to predictable stupidity in the face of an omnipotent enemy, but it's okay, here come the ~~~KILL TEAMS~~~ that can single-handedly murder entire fleets and attack moons

Yeah the repeated assaults on the Ork capital do start to take on a Monty Python "Build the castle in the swamp" quality to them don't they.

Plus the whole time they're desperately scouring the galaxy for Sisters to use as an anti-psyker weapon I'm "But. But. What about the Culexus?"

Edit: Oh and the reason for not employing the Grey Knights is also pants-on-head stupid.

To be fair, a lot of the stuff about the Grey Knights is pants-on-head stupid. 666 rites of the Emperor for example.

A friend offloaded the William King Space Wolf books on me recently and while I can't say I really thought much of the first one, the second one is a lot better. I'm not sure if that's because of, or in spite of, the couple chapters filled with Space Wolf fart jokes, drunk orks pissing on the protagonists, and a drag race conducted entirely while cosplaying as orks.
