Try using Gloomhaven Helper, it cuts down the physical setup (both in time and space) by like half.

Also recommending this.

And get better at organizing. That shouldn't be the reason you shelve your favorite game. It barely takes us any time and most of the time I just do it before my friends come over. Not having people to play with is another thing completely but sort of a requirement to the hobby. Can always try meetups though if it's important enough to you.

That sounds rad, I'll definitely give it a shot. My friend who's most into the game is always on Steam, so I should be able to talk him into it.

I'll keep that in mind for the future. I doubt I've actually played my last physical game of Gloomhaven, but right now I'm kind of sick of seeing it on my table (and want to try some other things), so I'm going to wait until I'm excited to give that another shot again.

It's not that I don't have anyone to play games with, or even that nobody wants to play this specific game. I've just had a hard time getting any kind of consistent scheduling going, I live kind of far from most of my friends, and I haven't been packing it up to travel with when it's my turn to head elsewhere, though leaving it at a better organized friend's house may end up being a solution if TTS doesn't work out.

Still not a bad idea in general though. I'm sure this won't be the last game where being organized would be helpful.

It makes escort missions super easy as well. Just have someone rush to the final room (invisibility and jump helps) and then swap the target in

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

Gloomhaven has that effect on people.

Honestly, I kinda sorta regret introducing my play group to Gloomhaven because it's all they want to play now (at least for board games -- genuine RPGs are still the top choice when we can actually get the right people together). I bought Spirit Island recently when the new printing came in stock and have gotten exactly zero interest in playing it because they want Gloomhaven instead.

Oh yes the first room. We had to look up a lot of stuff, we restarted the room once because we'd been doing things wrong (forgot to use the decks and were just attacking with pure numbers). The first room took about an hour, the second about a half hour. We dawdle. I had a talk with my wife about the term "analysis paralysis." She's learning.

There's a lot of handholding happening. Like I mentioned a page or two ago, the concept of "initiative", by itself, took about ten minutes to explain. There's lots of basic stuff, like push or pull or what the concept of a "buff" is, that we've had to go over.

It's actually a *really big* deal that she wanted to play a second room at all. I was giving her a chance but expecting this to be a solo campaign.

I actually played my first session with our group last night too and it was awesome. We definitely couldn't have done the next scenario because it was getting super late but we all were debating whether to immediately return to Gloomhaven or follow the link and everyone seemed excited to continue.

Also excited by the fact that (first scenario spoiler if this even matters) the first treasure chest gains a random location. My group was wondering whether the path would start branching and that was a cool early surprise

EDIT: just posted this after getting sidetracked and notice that Hieronymous only got to the second room, so glad I spoilered that! And congrats on your first session.

First off, really glad she is giving the game a go!

Second, as someone who suffers from analysis paralysis in other games this actually ends up being a non-offender once you fully learn how things work (which is a fair amount) and just accept things will fail half the time cause the monsters will ruin your master plans.

Hahah my literal first turn as the Brute: I was closest to the 3 bandits on the right of the room and did a delayed initiative with a big sweeping attack and the lower half attack, and literally the first guard card we drew was the one that gave them all ranged attacks. So instead of me tanking and smashing I watched our party's Cragheart getting nearly killed in the first round because he was equidistant from me and acted earlier.

Also Brute item talk: super glad I went with the helmet which came into play like 3 times during the first scenario and was awesome

My son is 11 and is having a great time. I make a suggestion here or there and if he makes a huge misplay we just reassign his card picks for the turn.

I also got a similar achievement in that my wife wanted to play two player the other night after the kids were in bed. So now I'm running one campaign with my son and myself, a second campaign with two parties of all three of us and just the wife and me, and a third campaign for my actual gaming group.

Good thing the app exists to track all of it.

I took the movement quiz and I'm really glad that almost all those situations are edge cases or close to it because I missed a ton of them and I really hated many of the correct answers. Our group would absolutely not want to call a lot of those by the rules, even if it made things easier for us.

I play a Cragheart so I just assume two thirds of the enemies are going to act before me every turn. My "super low initiative card" is like a 16 and my next best is 29 or something. Quick my character is not.

Oh, neat. The one we drew was a boss scenario that totally murdered us, but which we came back for with different, higher-level characters and tore up like 30 scenarios later. I though it was an entirely appropriate "you're not ready for side scenarios at level one" tutorial lesson.

I just took this and I'm glad I did because it does clarify some things re: how the monsters choose focus and prioritize actions (I didn't know it breaks ties as the crow flies, and that it just prioritized losing disadvantage from its focus and not necessarily every character)

Yeah, you don't get the jump benefit for your landing hex, which makes a certain kind of conceptual sense if you squint, but it's also one of those obnoxious fiddly rules that I hate having to keep track of and I kind of want to just pretend it doesn't exist.

We've (accidentally) been playing like it doesn't exist. Outside of solo scenarios I don't think it changes too much.

Well, it makes sense that you can't end a jump on an obstacle, and jumping into a trap or hazardous terrain triggers it, so I can see how it makes sense from a rules perspective, even if it's hella unintuitive.

It also helps to have played a character a few times so you become more familiar with your options.

Often the best and most memorable scenarios are the ones where your plans go wrong repeatedly. We've had several that we barely managed to salvage after things initially went wrong (scenario 29 was like that: didn't help that three out of four players were running new characters), and a few that we lost and learned very valuable lessons from. Spoilers for Circles class: We ran one scenario where the Brute and Sun hopped into the middle of enemies and got savaged, and Circles brought out too many summons and crowded the narrow corridors so much that we couldn't maneuver effectively. By the time we arrived at the last room--which had mostly oozes--we were out of gas. Fortunately, we were running in casual mode because the other party had already cleared the scenario. (Sun wanted to run it because of his personal quest.) Circles was careful after that not to bring out too many summons at once. It is my understanding that most groups don't encounter this problem because they aren't as effective at keeping summons alive.
