Got one of those flameless plasma lighters that just has an arc you use to light stuff, it makes a noise that absolutely terrifies the daves holy poo poo. Like it's nearly imperceptible, like a very faint hiss as though a balloon had a pinhole leak, but the cats react like I sprayed them with ice water. It can't even harm anything because the arc is shrouded between the electrodes and has maybe a 5mm width. Took the thing out to light a candle and all hell broke loose when I hit the button.

It probably has some intense high frequency noise that's out of our hearing. We hear up to 20khz (at best) and cats up to 64khz. Those plasma lighters have to make a really high voltage to create the spark and that likely uses some cheapo inductors and such that 'ring' with really high frequency audible noise.

It's not cheap inductors, it's that the designers don't care about high frequency noise.

They're not "sprint and hide under things" afraid, just "gently caress this I'm leaving the room, with haste" afraid. I think only Graeme (large orange dave) hides under things when he's scared and that only happens when we have strangers over.
