Snowman_McK posted:You wanted to talk about the implied connection between Rises and BvS. I'm just not seeing how the end of one or the beginning of the other contradicts that implied connection No I didn’t, I wanted to talk about what rises was saying about Batman. I did want to know if they were canonically tied but that’s settled so time to move on. Whether they contradict each other honestly isn’t important as they are two separate movie continuities and while I may not like BVS that isn’t a bad thing, it’s perfectly fine.

The Big Short was a much better told and less indulgent movie about white-collar crime than the Wolf of Wall Street.

feedmyleg posted:I really wish the art direction were better on these. Seeing as season 3 of the show really goes abstract and pop art with its sets and general visuals, moving to an animated medium should have freed them up to go really gonzo with it while keeping the budget low. The comics do an alright job of it, but even those could have been pushed more. I think most of the DC animated movies have been in that sort of faux-anime style for a while now; I'm going to say since the Young Justice series. I guess it's fine but I don't find it very exciting to look at.

Batman Brave and the Bold is massively underrated. I'm pretty sure its version of Aquaman is the inspiration for the movie one.

They're thematically tied, not canonically. Of course, BvS Batman borrows strongly from The Dark Knight Returns and the idea of an ageing veteran Batman, but mixed up with a younger inexperienced Superman. One thing I do like with the superhero movies and their shared universe whatever is that they do some mix ups with the timelines so everybody isn't always vaguely 30, or in the case of younger ones in their vague late teens forever. (until they grow up and are rebooted back)

But everyone who has seen it raves about it—it's absolutely the spiritual sequel to Batman '66. And yeah, definitely the Aquaman inspiration, but I like the cartoon version a lot more. Less bro-y and more boisterous and well-meaning.

The non-portrait shot is somewhat better...I'm amazed that they simply went with Will in costume, and not some CG-rotoscoped monstrosity.EW Cover Story posted:The final version of Will Smith’s Genie in his blue floating lamp form isn’t quite finished Oh.

I don’t know why, but I had assumed Smith’s Genie would be some kind of crazy mo-cap performance. That look is more in line with the broadway costume.

The only encouraging thing about that article is that the production seems to be willing to mix it up a bit and that they aren't going to be a shot-for-shot remake of the original. But I still expect a complete lack of imagination to the new stuff, a ton of fanservice, and an unwillingness to reinvent or deviate in any significant way. Fingers still crossed, though. Will looks awful visually and the other costumes look way too cosplay-ish, but it is an EW cover/photo shoot so these things have to be taken with a grain of salt. The new Aladdin actor looks to at least have some charm from the interview. This may be the only one of the animated remakes I end up bothering to see, unless down the line one of them bothers to actually deviate from the source material in any meaningful way. Or unless this looks awful from the trailer, at which point I'll skip it.

Don’t forget that the new Aladdin is literally using brownface in crowd shots because the production crew claimed they couldn’t find enough Middle Eastern dancers and acrobats, they they painted white people.

Makes me think of a low budget stage production. There's a guy in Toronto who's been putting on British-style pantomime plays for... decades? This was his Aladdin production. Yes, that's a skateboard. And yes, that's Bret Hart playing the Genie.
