Netflix made a bad torture porn John Wick knock off. It's bad. This seems low effort, I know. If you think that, watch it. See how much effort you can put in past getting to the credits.

Watched it last night with the wife, on a whim. None of us liked it. Mikkelsen puts forth a decent effort but the cartoonishness of the whole Damocles world vs. Duncan Vizla’s serious one doesn’t work. Either would have probably worked on their own. Also, we had to skip the torture scenes, I really don’t need to see that. If you’re hung over and have two hours to burn, maybe watch it, but that’s about it.

that Mads Mikkelsen is near-simultaneously starring in movies titled Polar and Arctic can't be at all confusing

Yea this was a disappointing misfire, even though Mads was excellent as usual. The weird thing was how good one particular action scene was, it's almost worth watching the movie for all on it's own, but there's just very little else surrounding it that's on that same level. I will say that it looks very nice in Dolby Vision, if you have a 4k Netflix account, so that's something.

Only positive in the two hour movie was that sweet pair of machine guns. You'd think stealing from John Wick, Snake Plisskin, the dude from Taken, and Leon would at least be passable. edit: Realized Polar stole machine guns from Thor Ragnarok leaving no redeeming qualities. I know exactly what scene you are talking about and I hope we get an actually good action movie staring Mads. He moves like a dancer and with a good choreographer I think he could be awesome in one. But good God this is a lovely lovely movie. Just the absolute worst parts of better movies.

I was watching this hoping for some fun B-movie action schlock and this film only had one action scene that was fun that appears halfway through the film. I was hoping that there would be more scenes like that and instead the movie just kinda fizzles out from there. It tries to be morbidly funny in many places but tries way too hard. The film just manages to be loud and obnoxious and doesn't seem to know how to be any fun. I feel like the film could have worked a lot better by chopping 20 or 30 minutes out of it. It's a shame cause Mads is great in it.

Yea it really is sad how absolutely perfect Mads is for this kind of movie and it was just a blown opportunity.

I loved Akerlund's Spun and Small Apartments, but he's been spending too much time in LA and it shows.

This movie is bad, but its badness is almost kind of interesting in a way. Its like someone made two different films and mashed them together. Mads' scenes are fairly grim and serious thanks to his acting, (although some of the dialogue is p dumb), but the other half of the movie is a mix of saw-level grossness and immature, sleazy, sex humor. Its bad, but you could use this movie as a teaching tool and how not to do Tone in a movie.

A bad story told ineptly by a space alien. This was bafflingly awful.

It feels like two completely different movies that someone crashed together. Especially when the two stories barely have any crossover. Also the bad guy's plan seemed really, really stupid. Like okay that's a short term goal but after you do this once you're never going to get any assassins to work for you again.

He didn't care, because he was doing it in order to cancel out existing long term liabilities and current debt, in order to be attractive to outside buyers. Which, much like the rest of the movie, is an ok idea executed poorly. It was a brief scene that was essentially a throwaway for all the impact it had on the plot. It could have been interesting to have a running through line where the organization buying the assassination firm reacts to the fluctuating value of the company. Play up the idiocy of modern quarter to quarter thinking. Have the inane, literal, gutting of Damocles reacted to with glee by the buyers. All these liabilities just flying off the bottom line. All that health insurance and pension money just flowing into the company's accounts. Until all they're buying is one name, one secretary, 15 nameless assassins/bodyguards who are too scared to even do their jobs, and a pending $7million payment.

If an action movie promises that it's going to be a hero vs. villain kind of movie and the villain sucks as bad as Blut does, it's going to fail. I keep cringing just thinking about that character and how stupid his motivations, actions, and construction were.
