I'm sure it's just that intellectual incuriousity : obviously as a devout Christian he knew that nazism and discrimination is wrong but he had no desire to actually find out how Jewish people lived and how they viewed the world.

And he kinda fell in love with the medieval Christian world (that's where segregated ghettos were made into a thing)

It is weird. Like, he clearly gets that class issues are a problem -- he talks about them at length in Charles Dickens, Last of the Great Men.

I think it's the catholicism combined with his own upper-class status leading to class complacency. It's very rare for an upper-class author to write with any sensitivity at all on class issues and usually requires (as in the case of Dickens) direct lived experience of lower-class life.

To be clear: unlike many other people who define themselves as Christians, G.K. actually held mercy and love as values.
It's just that he carefully avoided consideration of how other people's lives actually go, as opposed to how he 'felt' those lives go.

Not quite sure what you mean by this; from what I've read of him, "incurious anti-elitism" would be putting it better. He was prone to idealization of "the common man," and frankly to anti-intellectualism. These tendencies led him to attack not only eugenics but also monopolistic businesses, aristocrats, the proto-libertarian aspects of Manchester liberalism, and the authoritarian aspects of the Fabian socialism. But his proposed alternative to these things (a redistribution of property so that as many people as possible could become small farmers and artisans), while at least reflecting basically sane moral instincts, involved a lot of wishful thinking, and his attack on anyone perceived as elitist, in combination with his criticisms of capitalism and socialism and his admiration for medieval Europe, led him toward anti-semitism, among other terrible ideas.

And with great brevity in the last stanza of the short poem "Elegy in a Country Churchyard". I always rather liked that.

The men that worked for England
They have their graves at home:
And bees and birds of England
About the cross can roam.

But they that fought for England,
Following a falling star,
Alas, alas for England
They have their graves afar.

And they that rule in England,
In stately conclave met,
Alas, alas for England,
They have no graves as yet.

I was going to post Orson Scott Card but someone beat me to it.

I got some Ender books in a big collection and I didn't like them. In fact I thought they were so bad that I had to google them to see if anyone else on the internet had heard about them. Turns out they are pretty drat popular

Which surprised me because I thought they were all legendarily bad. The author also goes into great detail with scenes of naked children in the showers and how slippery they are and their development or lack thereof. I was sure this guy was either in prison or on his way there.

He also paints a view of the world where the middle east is wholly defined by terrorism and their final rejection of terrorism lead them into enlightenment (but then they fall back into terrorism)

There also a whole book about how the hero and his girlfriend are having children in vitro and the villain steals the fertilized eggs and the hero then spends a whole book travelling the world and trying to recover "my babies". As opposed to just, You know, going back to the doctor and jacking off in a new tube and doing it again. The whole story requires a very particular political affiliation to be taken seriously.

I could also go on about how no female character ever have any agency but rather drift in the lake that is the story until a male character comes by and snags for an adventure before leaving them drifting in the lake again.

Heinlein was a bad writer who jumped right off Pervert Cliff in his later years, but he's hard to really disparage as a person. For all the creepiness in his books, there aren't any horror stories about him harassing women in reality, and by all accounts, he and his wife were perfectly happy with each other to the end. Not a great guy, but certainly not worth this thread's time.

Contrast that with Isaac Asimov, who was the archetypal male feminist who treats women like poo poo.

What? Only by the most generalized, abstract, any-deviation-from-Marx-is-Hitler definition of "fascist" was Heinlein one. Libertarianism and fascism are both awful political philosophies, but they aren't the same awful political philosophy.

If you want to argue that Heinlein was a bad person because of his political ideas, sure, but you don't need a Nazi straw man for that.
