I just watched Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn on Netflix and it was kind of startling how many similarities to Evangelion I saw. Of course, I know that the original Gundam show came out in like the 70s, so I know I sort of have things "backwards" here, but it's always really cool to see all this imagery and themes get shared by different stories.

As an aside, is there any good way to see the original Gundam anywhere besides like buying some 200 dollar bluray from Japan?

Are you in the U.S.? You can get the movie compilation trilogy version blu-rays for about $30 on Amazon, though if you want the original TV show its closer to $85ish dollars.

I have two questions.

1. Are those Rebuild movies any good? There's still one yet to come out right?

2. Is the series on Netflix going to have a subtitle option available? I can't handle dubbing, except Cowboy Bebop.

The Rebuild movies are at the very least interesting, judging them as a whole is difficult since, as you note, there's still one missing and there's a lot still up in the air.

Netflix has subs for all of its anime as far as I'm aware.

Unicorn has great animation and great supporting cast (Marida Cruz is the best character, fight me) but Banadger is just such a nobody that just doesn't develop in any way. Compare him to Marida or Riddhe who have legitimately cool arcs and you realize that if they did something interesting with the main character the whole show would improve immensely.

The Revoltechs are pretty good. If you like building models Kotobukiya's kits are nice. Bandai's kits are old and show their age, though the PG Eva 01 is probably the biggest Eva you can get without going full custom sculpture.

I mean, poo poo, Evangelion itself takes tons of reference from classic Tokusatsu shows. It's a love letter to the director's passions as much as Pacific Rim was.

It's also full of references to weirder stuff like Cordwainer Smith.

So I made these last May. I have no idea where to put them so I'm putting them here. I'd been chewing on this kind of cross for a long time as I was introduced to this album the same year I was introduced to Evangelion. Specifically, the images for Blue Monday felt strongest, but the rest of the album came from the same kind of place. It was a fun exercise, at the very least.

I wanted to do all 12 songs, but the two omitted were very... difficult to work with so I just skipped them. These aren't really presented in any particular order. If I had to give any ranking, it'd be the following: Blue Monday, Fetisha, Pantomime, Platinum, Gender, Revival, Fiend, Stitches, All The Same, Dissention

I present:
An AMV collection of 10 Evangelion x Orgy's Candyass (1998) album: https://vimeo.com/album/5200293

Blue Monday https://vimeo.com/album/5200293/video/271163229

fake edit: it only embeds Flash video from vimeo for some reason? wtf. That's dumb. I'll just link them I guess.

It's legitimately cool that Anno is getting all these opportunities, and Shin Godzilla was awesome. But holy crap, I'm just gonna say Rebuild has been a pretty big mess and let 3 and 4's productions speak for themselves.

The brand easy.

Really I don’t think it means you don’t support him just because you want closure. People aren’t asking him to make a series, but one last movie. It’s not crazy.
