What's hilarious is that while nobody wants watercooled 911s right now, they are soon going to be dying by the tons. The 996, 997 and I think even 991 have an engine issue where the penny pinchers at Porsche decided to gently caress with an engineering decision. The connecting rod is offset some small amount (1/2 to 1mm IIRC) from the centerline of the piston. This theoretically will cause less wear in the bores, the downside is that you need two different pistons for each side of the engine, this would cost money. So instead they just went with one piston. One would naturally think that if offsetting the rod in the piston in one direction reduces wear, that moving it in the other direction would actually cause wear, which it does. Thus, especially in cold environments, but given enough time in any environment, the piston will scuff the bores into oblivion. The only to way correct this problem is an entire engine rebuild, for about $15-20k, more than the cars are worth at this point.

Wait 20 years and the hated watercooled cars that got the expensive engine fix will be "collectible," both due to attrition and the fact that they are legitimately awesome cars.

Will a turbo Subaru motor fit in a 911 of that vintage? Surely, a wrecked WRX is less than twenty grand.

Yes, but most people just end up using the cars with blown motors as donors for LS swaps, which have their own issues and the swap alone costs about as much as just buying a C5 Corvette, if not more.

e: Subaru engine swaps are more popular on the older 914s. My personal dream 914 swap is one with a Subaru SVX H6 :gizz:

I found this image on the Internet, perhaps you've heard of it? It's been around for a while I hear.

Since we haven't had any good Des Moines chat recently, I want to share this ClickHole quiz that popped up in my Facebook feed. If you're not familiar, ClickHole is an arm of The Onion satirizing viral media, listicles, BuzzFeed, etc.:

How Badly Are You Ripping Off The City Of Des Moines?

An excerpt:

quote:

On the surface, you seem to love the city of Des Moines, but that might not be the whole story. Are you puling a fast one on Iowa’s capital? Take this quiz to find out!

1. Are you currently living in the city of Des Moines?

[ ] I am! I was born and raised here, and I love it too much to leave!

[ ] I am. Moving here was the easiest way to execute my plan without arousing suspicion.

[ ] I’m not, but I do have a tax haven set up there for a payday loan business of mine.

[ ] I am. It’s a pretty nice city, even though my rent is triple what I paid in San Francisco, and my landlord is the mayor.

I've owned a 991 and never heard of this before, you would think given the history with the IMS bearing, any engine destroying engineering fault would with these cars would be discussed ad nauseam. At any rate they sold a million gazillion 991s for 8 model years so I'm not worried about those going extinct

It's not an impression, it's reality. PCNA will blacklist you for life if you sell you allocation before delivery or the car itself in less than 12 months from delivery.

It's not the cash grab it used to be before that, but it's still a way to barely drive an awesome car for a year and make money on it after that.

This must be a very very new policy because as of the current GT allocations and builds there are definitely many dealers and brokers flipping these cars pre and post sale at a handsome markup

I disagree. I feel it's quite easy to predict cars that will go up in value (not when, though!). You can observe a car rise in price way before rich people get told to buy it and jump on the bandwagon.

The part where it's not a sure-fire strategy is that you are going to have to keep the car somehow, maintain it, insure it and so on. It's an ongoing cost you'll have to pay for years or decades, which rather cuts into your return. If you're not a person who buys the car to drive and then sells it, or a person rich enough to already have a storage facility for cars, it just doesn't make sense as much as I would like it to.

Yes I desperately want to be that guy who keeps and sells cars but lol if I could afford that I wouldn't need to.

This is correct, I don't think it's that hard to figure out that certain cars will maintain or modestly increase their value, the hard part is actually making any bottom line money doing it after transaction expenses, taxes, insurance, maintenance, and the imputed cost of storing an investment car in a protected environment. If you are talking about limited allocation Porsche, Ferrari, or other cars, then there are also exorbitant pay-to-play expenses required to obtain the vehicles directly from the manufacturer in the first place. The other hard part is justifying it as an investment strategy when luxury goods like collector cars are highly correlated with other market investments anyways and offer much worse returns with significant illiquidity and high carrying costs.

It first started getting mentioned in 2017. IIRC, Porsche wants a "name for every car" and if they can't get that they are going to reduce production until they can get it, and they seemed serious about not giving allocations to people who were not personally using them.

If it's still going on for real it's entirely possible they've begun to back off of that position.

I couldn't agree more if they were really truly interested in stopping car flipping but tolerating the closely-held car flipping and ADMs is one way that they compensate their dealers and limited allocations are closely tied to sales performance. From a PR standpoint it is much easier for the dealer to be the bad guy running up prices than PCNA. The other issue is that these GT cars are very much irrational veblen goods and no matter what the price is they will sell out and probably trade at a markup for a little while. The GT2RS is the most expensive car that Porsche has sold since the 918 by a wide margin and many of them are optioned way over $400,000, but they are still selling with huge markups at present.
