So, the government just came incredibly close to falling to a confidence vote because there may not have been enough Liberals in the house to defeat the motion maybe and we almost had a premature election. https://twitter.com/CBCKatie/status/1108825221962833922 https://twitter.com/CBCKatie/status/1108827446294573066 https://twitter.com/CBCKatie/status/1108827983467503618 HackensackBackpack fucked around with this message at 22:22 on Mar 21, 2019 |

Just making a post for the new thread, stressing that all of our problems would be solved with a communist revolution that strips the rich of their undeserved wealth, making a more equitable society that would see greater democracy in the workplace and in our communities. It's scary how few people can see how the entire world has lost its way with the collapse of the Soviet Union, lost its optimism for the future to be replaced with constant backstabbing and pessimism. Even the heart of capitalism, the United States, had to be better and promise better things in the future to placate the masses. Without the counterweight, capitalism is unrestricted in its rapaciousness.

Sad to see the old thread go. There's legit half a decade of really strong effort posts I crib from all the time in there. IDG why CanPol has this reputation for being poisonous. I don't feel like we get any more petty/spiteful than any other thread of longtime users cooped up together? In fact, I feel like there is a cadre of posters who consistently elevate the discourse in a way that other threads just don't have. Wish I had the energy and time to try to add to that more consistently. And speaking to fiscal matters - yeah, I have personally run the gamut. Homeless for a few months, working 60 hour weeks in the trades at just above minimum wage, lived for years in poverty - and directly adjacent to the more hardcore, transgenerational, racialised poverty, and now I have joined the middle class as a teacher. Life is fundamentally different on the bottom rungs in a way you simply can't begin to understand unless you have experienced it. There is a sense of hopelessness and desperation - like you're trapped at a bottom of a well looking up at the sky - that filters through into pretty much every life decision and thought process you make. I make~75th percentile provincial wage now, and I almost feel guilty. Still haven't gotten used to the instant comfort my salary offers me, and frankly I hope I never do. All those stressors and fears and "oh I guess I'm having water and rice for supper again" nights just disappear. I don't have to make 5 dollars stretch at the grocery store. I just buy what I want, and if I am a little short at the end of the month, well I just dip into a savings account that I literally never had before. The fact that isolation/mental health/poverty are all intimately tied up together seems blindingly self-evident to me. Stickarts fucked around with this message at 04:46 on Mar 22, 2019 |

The NDP did something similar in 2011 over back-to-work legislation for Canada Post. This time around, the Tories wanted to do this to delay the budget, because their Opposition Day was originally Monday, but the Liberals moved their day to Wednesday to let the budget pass relatively on time. The CPC is moving 257 fiscal motions--all confidence votes (which is why the government almost fell this afternoon)--until the PM allows Jody Wilson-Raybould and/or Jane Philpott to comment further on the SNC Lavalin thing, especially after the Justice committee shut it down this week. Justice is done with the file, but the Tories now want Ethics to hear from JWR.

Leofish posted:The NDP did something similar in 2011 over back-to-work legislation for Canada Post. The Conservatives seem to have decided this is an issue they can win on. The issue being the cover up, mind, not the underlying supposed scandal itself. My money is on them having miscalculated. If the Conservatives had targeted the incredibly cynical Liberal claim they had to end the investigation to urgently deal with hate crime, fine. They seem to have decided instead to claim that witnesses should have been recalled over and over until the underlying "scandal" turned into an actual scandal. The problem is on that point, the Liberals made the right call in letting everyone testify, and even allowing one witness to testify multiple times. The opposition demands to call witnesses over and over can be cast as being what happened in the US with the Benghazi investigations. And the Liberals won't be shy to compare the Conservatives to the Republicans. Now, if anyone wants to enlighten me on the claim that Trudeau has morphed into some anti-feminist, I would appreciate it. Something to do with Ms. Caesar-Chavannes saying Mr. Trudeau yelled at her (without mentioning over what)? The opposition choice to scream non-stop in the house of commons for days is going to make it tough to argue that one politician yelling at another is anything out of the ordinary, but perhaps I just don't get their point.

JWR and Philpott also don't seem like they're on the kind of warpath that Conservatives would want. Philpott said today or yesterday something like "of course I don't want Scheer as PM but I want the Liberals to be the best version of the Liberals".
