I backed this documentary film called "Socialism: An American Story" on kickstarter after seeing a DSA email about it. They had to raise something like $65k in 10 days, and I was certain that they weren't going to be able to do it. I mean, DSA people don't exactly have a lot of cash, and that's a big amount to cover in under two weeks.

Shockingly, they managed to clear $175k with just a few hours to spare! Kind of nice to see one of these projects actually succeed.

A bunch of state 529 plans are offering opening deposit bonuses, mostly like $50 for $50, for 5/29. Good time to open an account of you've been thinking about it.

You can be an uncle and do this? I have a few nieces and nephews with deadbeat parents who are going to need help when the time comes. And poo poo, I’m probably never having kids anyway.

Yes, you can open or contribute to a 529 for someone else's kids

You can even open one in your own name, and change it later if you want to save for a kid that doesn't exist yet.

There's no relationship restriction for 529s, AFAIK. All you need is the kid's SSN and residential address.

i might have to ramp up to 160% for like two months (80%x2 aka 64 hours/week) because some crazy poo poo is about to drop and it's an all-hands on deck situation

it's a brand new systems integration contract but project management is project management so whatevs

once it's stood up i can leave my current contract, or the new one, nobody cares

160% is going to suck colossal amounts of rear end

i dont know if i'm gonna do it tho

Got Impossible meat on Qdoba burrito. There's a lot going on there but I can tell it's not really beef. That said it tastes fine and if we have to use more faux-meat to save the world I can live with that.

Impossible meat is a lot better than the Shadowrun-esque Soykaf and mycoprotein slurry I was expecting so I'll take it.

I think a burger is probably the better way to judge taste and texture. I'll probably try the Impossible Whopper when it fully rolls out. I could just go and buy some patties but the rules about grills in my complex, which are really the city's rules, are too much of a pain to bother having one.

Vasudus

I have to get home extremely early if I want to use the shared grills at my unit because they're always in use by the many central american families in my immediate complex area.

Which is fine really, but I do miss having my own grill. Cooking a steak when there was two feet of snow on the ground was fun times when I lived up north and I kinda miss it.

I've been toying with going vegetarian or pescatarian, i think we are gonna get thunderfucked on pork prices in the near future and beef is already kind of expensive.

I think the meat industry is getting scared, I've seen a bunch of articles lately with headlines along the lines of "IMPOSSIBLE BURGERS MIGHT TASTE GOOD, BUT ARE THEY HEALTHY????"
Like motherfucker, beef burgers are gonna send most of us to an early grave, how much worse could a fake meat burger be?

I still havent tried one, I might next time I hit up Qdoba though.

At home, I eat beef on average once a week. Same with pork. Poultry more often. I have no problem with doing what our ancestors did, which is red meat being a special occasion luxury. But still gently caress people who are trying to convince me that eating bugs is reasonable.

Vasudus posted:

I read that as "prostitutes" subconsciously and was extremely confused at first :stare:

But speaking of fake meat, a highly-anticipated product called "Beyond Meat" just dropped on the German market, and it's supposed to be the holy grail of meat substitutes. My sister was preaching about the drat thing for months, so I grabbed a couple yesterday and tried one out. The patty itself looked 1:1 like the regular frozen generic patties you can buy at the store when you don't want to shell out bigger bucks for fresh meat, or make your own patties, so it's not really in the category I'd generally buy.

Threw it in the pan frozen to see if I could go for a bit of a medium rare touch. The sear on the outside doesn't really look that appealing, but the texture on the inside was actually...pretty impressive to be honest.
The taste was good, and the irony about my criticism is that it could have probably used more seasoning, when my initial skepticism stemmed from it probably being another over-seasoned product, sooo...well done, actually. Overall, you can still taste that it's not real meat, but a good product. Now if they manage to drop the price on that and comparable products, instead of keeping it in the overpriced segment designed to milk vegans (heh), I think we're on a decent course to find meat alternatives.

Still better than a Ponytar

I’d definitely go vegan if I could plan more than 15 minutes ahead.

The area I live in has so much go vegetarian and vegan food that it’s really easy to do when out and about.

But I’m lazy so just revert to a meat and vegetable dish whenever I cook at home. I’ve started throwing tofu in instead of chicken though, and that’s been pretty good most of the time.

Also, that’s dope that the DSA documentary got up.
