Local Hero is a big get for my family, I remember watching that in the early 2000s with them. I’ll definitely be grabbing it.

I think you're all out of your loving minds. I also haven't seen Ghostbusters II probably since the late '90s and my opinion isn't as informed as it could be so you've all convinced me to re-watch Ghostbusters II to see if my opinion on the subject will change. And now I know I'm out of my loving mind. Jerks.

Really the only thing that's there to make Ghostbusters II feel different is the combination of Viggo and Yanosh. Other than that it's a straight remake, but because they're both so insane and in their own individual ways, it works.

There are good ideas and some neat things in Ghostbusters II, but it's dragged down by a kinda dull "here we go again" attitude. I use the analogy of soda that's gone flat, there's still flavor but there's also something missing.

There are scenes like the court room that are actually better than anything in the first movie. For all its faults Ghostbusters II is still a fun movie and its biggest sin is just not being as good as the first movie. But even then that's a tall order because the first movie is a genuine comedy classic. And as has been mentioned, everything Peter MacNicol is doing in that movie is pure gold.

SimonCat posted:Eh, the dark jumpsuits are fine, but it's weird how little they were used in the movie. They were used a lot more before a significant chunk of the movie was re-shot. Also, GB2 is a soulless, beat-for-beat remake of the first with a few decent moments and little else going for it, and I am so glad the principals got that mutual approval clause regarding sequels put into their contracts.

GB 2 always bummed me out as a kid because I thought, "After saving NY there's no way they would tumble into obscurity so fast!" but now as an old person it bums me out for pretty much the opposite reason.

What was the last movie to become pop culture? Harry Potter? I can’t think of anything else that’s transcended the medium and become pop culture aka Star Wars, Ghostbusters, Fortnite etc

That last Avengers? Or has it already been forgotten due to how Marvel churns them out? I think the culture moves at such a speed that there are still movies that big, but the window is so much smaller.

I had kids thanking Tony Stark, saying "Love you 3000" and referring to their friends as the Avengers at a recent graduation. MCU is culture now. Before that? Get Out? 50 Shades? Hunger Games? Twilight? Harry Potter? The Matrix.

Love You 3000 was really a great bit of writing. It's really not easy to write stuff that feels genuine like that but still goofy like what a kid would come up with.

Yeah, I’m not sure if it was an on-set ad-lib or something he wanted in the script but it’s definitely better than anything the writers would have come up with.
