HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE DEAD, MOTHERFUCKER?

When i lived in Florida i got a florida resident epcot pass that was only good after 4 pm and it was pretty cheap :v: I lived 15 minutes away so it was fun to pop in and check poo poo out on a whim

Tickets when i went to Disneyland for star wars land cost me 700 dollars for 2 days. If i lived close enough to go more than 4 times a year Id consider an AP. The 20% discount is not insignifcant too.

So uh, Galaxy's Edge (which is canon) is bombing, apparently.

From what I've been reading around, it's unusually ambitious for a theme park section. Disney's going full on immersion with it so the park staff's essentially LARPing with either being Resistance or pro-First Order opinions, no standard signage so people will have to ask the staff where things are and all, prices are listed in credits. I can see it being fun for a really intense Star Wars fan, but not so much for others. I really can't see how it'd function on a heavy crowds day to standards.

And to add to that, when the Orlando version opens up it's going to include that full immersion hotel. So you can pay somewhere in the ballpark of ~$1000/night to LARP Star Wars. Here's a good breakdown of the latest on it: https://thepointsguy.com/news/star-wars-hotel-disney-galaxys-edge/

I love Star Wars but this doesn't sound like an experience I would care for very much.

I don't think it's that unusual when you think of it two ways:

1) Disney was really ambitious and sort of crazy with OG Disneyland. Ignoring the fact that he literally tried to recreate his childhood with Main Street USA, the theming and immersion of Dinsey Parks has always been strong.

2) The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is a huge hit and part of it was because it tried to sell visitors on the experience of actually being in Hogsmeade.

I think it's just raising the ante of something that has always been part of the parks and trying to reaching the success of Harry Potter.

I just don't think this is possible with Star Wars, this universe is so completely different from Harry Potter. When I think Star Wars, i'm thinking super dangerous locations where someone might come out of the darkness and shank you. So unless that is happening to park guests, it's really not a true experience.

The goofy Avatar park was their first foray into that and a definite response to HP world, but also a gigantic gamble because it came right inbetween the years where people give a poo poo about Avatar.

I personally am excited to see Galaxy's Edge someday. I'd never buy a $200 saber because anything bought in a theme park is crap quality, but just seeing the props would be neat. I'm a hell of a lot more excited for that park than I am for magical Palpatine possessions in Star Wars 9.

I live in Orlando and I have a hotel for the opening few days. I'm hoping they institute the reservation system they did for Disneyland, as that seemed to work to keep down the crowds. But I figure, if it's too crowded, Food and Wine Festival is going on at Epcot, so I can always just go get drunk.

And yeah, I'm not buying the lightsaber.

I can kind of see what Disney is trying to do by making a new location that ties into the Sequel Trilogy, but I think it was a bad gamble. People want to live their fantasies from the movies when they go to the attractions based on them. With Star Wars, that means Mos Eisley, the Jedi Temple, Starkiller Base, or the Emperor's throne room. I have zero interest in going to some outpost that shows up in one of the books. Imagine the Harry Potter world without Hogwarts, but set in a brand new borough of New York that tied into the Fantastic Beasts movie.

Same. I must have seen the TFA trailer a hundred times, playing it back frame by frame. Took me a few viewings to realize how hollow the movie was.

Saw TLJ once. Dogshit.

I have no intention of seeing the next one until it’s on Netflix or whatever. Don’t care if I get completely spoiled beforehand.

They sell Jedi/Sith robes in the park that you get yelled at if you try to actually wear them in the park. There is no LARPing. It's a meat market of being shuffled around to throw hundreds of dollars at poo poo that breaks before you even leave the park.

I get what people dream of and want, and I do too, but this is turning into Star Citizen levels of delusion here.

For the OG Disneyland and Wizarding World, those are a different entity compared to Star Wars. You can take someone with no idea of an old timey Main Street or the Victoriana-esqe Wizarding World, it's still not so out there that they'll still enjoy themselves. Going with an outpost town set in GFFA, that's where it gets tricky. To the person who's only knowledge of Star Wars is "it's some sci-fi thing", the immersion they're going with isn't going to appeal. To the person with average knowledge of Star Wars, they're going to expect the more familiar sights from the OT and/or prequels. From what I've read, Galaxy's Edge is more to appeal to the more intense Star Wars fan. I know being ambitious has worked for Disney fairly well starting with the "You want to build a what where??", but I think this might not pan out too well.

Sorry if I used LARP incorrectly. I was trying to think of what applies along the lines of the people who live in the historical recreation locations where they talk as if they're from the era while there. Recreationist didn't seem to fit as well as LARP for the employees.

I do agree that the concept of Galaxy's Edge sounds good, but I'm not seeing it's execution working as well as Disney's hoping for.

If that other ride is as insane as it sounds, that might be the thing that makes the whole thing worth while.

It’s essentially like you’re in your own Star Wars movie, using the cue line as a way to be immersed in the story.

Like you go on a shuttle and it gets snatched up by the first order, and you’re escorted around the giant ship until you’re thrown on a transport cart and you begin your escape. It sounds insane and awesome. But who knows what it’s actually going to be .

That would be fun, and this was kind of the conceit of the Star Trek: The Experience rides in Vegas. You're touring a Star Trek display, then the lights go out and the whine of a transporter beam fills the air. When the lights come back on, you're on the transporter pad of the Enterprise. The Borg one was also really cool. Both involved live actors and made the attraction and the ride really different from anything else at amusement parks.

Opening Star Wars land before it's central attraction was ready was just kind of weird. The most charitable take is that it's a dry run to see what needs improvement. The most cynical one is that it's a cash grab, hoping to snatch up super fans' money with a "preview" and get a second bite at the apple when the main ride is ready.

It's a cash grab. Bob Iger gets substantial quarterly bonuses based upon the company's financial performance, most particularly tied to the film and parks divisions, and he's stepping down after his contract expires in a year and a half.
