I've interviewed with a computer company headquartered in the world famous metropolis of Unna (bei Dortmund), so I guess it's not that absurd. Bosch also lures people to tiny Swabian towns, probably because they pay well. The central idea isn't that someone will move to Halle though, the idea is that someone has already studied informatics at the TH Halle for some reason and will now accept lower pay so he won't have to move out of mum's house.

Randler posted:Ich versuche mich gerade in Musiktheorie einzulesen und ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass selbst von den Grundlagen nichts Teil des schulischen Lernplans war. i disagree actually. We had most stuff of music theory in school - I remember starting with Kontrapunkt, all the different Greek scales, Dur/moll, identifying keys of a song, playing off of Dreiklaenge, Quintenzirkel, song structure etc. Everything but Jazz, basically. But it was utterly non-motivated with regards to "how do I make a song", and only as "let's analyze this boring musical genius of old without any context to making music". Bonus points if your teacher hated modern music. Years later I picked up a book because I wanted to write a song (the most Germanest of sentence) and I actually knew all the stuff. It just never occured to me that one should use these weird concepts in songwriting. Edit: Like, imagine a couple of weeks projects where teams would write songs in school using the concepts learned. Seems so obvious, yet probably never occurs. Haramstufe Rot fucked around with this message at 08:56 on Jul 11, 2019 |

I also had musical theory in school but couldn't make heads or tails of it, which frustrated my father (a professional musician to whom this stuff is super obvious) to no end. I still always got good grades in music tho despite my pathetic showing at theory exams, because I could play the guitar well

My music teacher is the only reason I passed my Abi. Being a dumb idiot at 15 or 20 or whenever you do your Abi, I hated my math teacher with passion and she attempted to give me a failing grade on my oral exam. My music teacher, who I guess vaguely respected that I could sing and play a bunch of instruments and had bands and were ok at music theory, fought her until she gave me a barely passing grade. Now I have no band, barely play any instrument anymore, but code algorithms for a living. Still, I need to call him and tell him he’s a cool dude.

It really depends on whether you want schools to be some sort of teenage daycare where students get to develop their personality and grow into full rounded adults (but not too rounded, hence the sport), or whether it should be an ice cold assessment center where students are sorted by ability from future neurosurgeon to future Hartzer. When I went to school, music lessons were where you got to relax a bit and bang on some cymbals, while sport was the weekly hour of brutal body shaming and not being picked for the Mannschaft. We did learn the Quintenzirkel and chords at some point though.

Tbh, sports lessons are cool and good. Give kids options to learn stuff that'll help them. I would've loved to learn about Gewichtheben earlier than i did. However grading that is pure Folter. Personally i siedel an the reason somewhere else than class struggle though: Music, arts and sports are HIGHLY subjective. Every person develops tastes for a host of different reasons in a lot of different categories and thus will have different amounts of energy to bring to any given topic that has zero correlation to skill or discipline. And judging people for their tastes is some primo inhuman swine behavior.

The most important factor underlying eg math grades is probably genetics, ie, an unearned privilege. But what is the point of grades: a reward for those who by the magic of their free will decide to do the right thing? A method for rank ordering pupils by performance? A tool for motivating everyone to do their best? They probably fail on all these metrics, although perhaps the least on #2. I have no idea what the alternative should be. But depriving students who are not so fortunate as to be brought into contact with music and the fine arts as one of the nice consequences of enjoying the privilege of a decent Elternhaus does not sound right to me either. Although maybe the focus should be put on “here is something many find rewarding, let’s try it out”. And ok, maybe drop the grades. I don’t know.

Cingulate posted:Some parts of grading music - ie theory - are quite objective. Even how well one can sing is at that level largely objective - a computer can measure how well you hit the notes. It’s just that it’s largely the roll of the genetic dice that determines how well you can hit a note, with some minor parent-side influence when it comes to playing instruments. I understand that it can be objectively measured, my argument settles around how interested any given person is going to be. And like, particularly in music: You first divide the pupils into those who care about making music and those who don't. And then you subdivide that further into those who care about the music the teacher put into the lesson and those who don't. There is no gradiation here from easy music to hard music, it's all entirely taste. Then you weigh that up against how likely it is to make a significant impact on your life. For any given student that settles around 0. Or to give a more concrete example: My parents gave me zero appreciation for visual arts, and i have very little interest in producing drawn art. Subsequently my grades went something like 4 4 4 3 4 4 2 4 4 3 3. That 2 in there? When we went over dada, which was interesting. Now compare that to math, which is literally sorted from easy to hard, and which for any given student will have a moderate influence on their life.

Also my personal story, which is only very lightly connected: My ma had an undiagnosed hernia for 5 years, and after 7 specialists couldn't find out what's wrong, and one doc sent her to a therapist, the last one told her the address of a ~heilpraktiker~, because clearly a woman with abdominal pain is a whiny femoid and not a sick person.

My Grundschul sport was pretty good, my teacher always called me "fat sack of potatoes" and then everyone made fun of me and i got beaten up for a couple of years. Fun times. And in high school, sport was 99% running and gymnastics, which I was not good at, so I got bad grades up until the very end, when we visited a Gym and I deadlifted 180kg and the teacher, who of course hated me, had to give me an A. Overall, school sports is good because you can learn how to hate sports and fight well.
