So, I guess spoilers if you want to go into the new film completely fresh, but Lashana Lynch of Captain Marvel film fame, will be playing Agent 007 in the film, presumably as a the replacement Mi6 Agent while Bond is off in Jamaica being retired, and it's upset the usual suspects.

Yeah, 70 percent of the articles purposely headline it as her being the new James Bond, which then draw a bunch of comments from people too stupid to read past a headline.

Honestly it sounds like just a similar situation to Skyfall where Naomi Harris was working as an agent for a while before she hosed up and almost killed Bond. The chuds are getting worked up for nothing because it'll probably play out in a similar way that makes the woman of color look incompetent compared to Bond.

This just seems like the dumbest kind of pandering, where you have two groups who are on the opposite side of an issue and the solution doesn't actually address either of those groups concerns.

I guess someone from Killing Eve is involved in Bond 25 somehow? Which is like, honestly, the best show that feels so much like a modern Bond-esque melodrama that makes everyone happy: -Psychopathic sexy assassin who travels the world doing murders -International secret society intrigue with plenty of twists and turns and backstabbing -An ungodly amount of location porn -EVIL RUSSIANS -HOT FORBIDDEN LESBIAN LOVE PLOT -Older woman of color in the leading role -Incredibly funny with actual jokes -A fair amount of guns and murder So yeah, honestly, Killing Eve is the spy show that feels like such a modern rebuke of all the issues with Bond movies these days while feeling very much like it’s own thing. It’s good poo poo.

What's the worst post-Roger Moore Bond film? I've been watching each film in the franchise this summer. I haven't gotten to Die Another Day yet but I'm guessing either that or The World is Not Enough.

You know as much as I was stoked by Craig in Casino Royale, he's been somewhat wasted. So was Brosnan. I think Dalton is the best Bond.

TWINE at least stays consistent and has some good ideas, like making the bond girl a villian.

Quantum of Solace is the obvious answer. It's a but cliche to hate on it but that movie was so, so bad. Just a mess in pretty much every area.

Die Another Day is terrible in many ways (not least because it was fearfully reacting to the likes of loving xXx by going "Oh no! Bond is seen as old-fashioned and out of touch with da yoof! How can we counter this?" [Cues up drum 'n' bass backing track, skip-frames action sequences, powers up the PS2 for some cutting-edge CGI and brings in Madonna]) but some of the action is done well despite all the poo poo around it (the hovercraft chase, the swordfight), and you could argue that the North Koreans drowned Bond at the start of the titles and everything after is just the final spastic flare-up of his dying neurons, leading to the reboot. Quantum of Solace, though, is just rushed, badly-edited, barely comprehensible garbage with a 'well, I know technically that's bad but it's not exactly world-hanging-on-a-knife-edge stuff, is it?' villainous plot that puts the camera in a tin bucket and kicks it around for 107 minutes while Daniel Craig glowers at people. On the other hand, at least it was short, while Spectre just dragged on and on and on with not a moment of surprise or excitement through the whole thing. A boring Bond is arguably worse than a bad Bond. I'd rather watch Moonraker or, hell, Die Another Day again before Spectre.

Cacator posted:Spectre has one of the best opening sequences in the series but it quickly falls apart after that (Radiohead's theme is far superior to the forgettable Sam Smith song for one thing), the car chase in Rome couldn't be more boring, Bautista was wasted, and the attempt to connect all of Craig's movies never felt anything more than contrived. The Austin Powers in Goldmember plot point (and the Star Trek Into Darkness "reveal" of Blofeld) were just pointless. Just let Blofeld be Blofeld for chrissakes, nobody cares. They shouldn't have put so much effort into Bond settling down with Madeleine Swann either because most of her dialogue boils down to "what's that?" I want to know what idiot saw Star Trek Into Darkness and thought "oh that plot twist that even people who liked the movie thought was complete horseshit? WE SHOULD SO THAT TOO!" That reminds me, though, how I've always had an odd mental association of James Bond with Star Trek. Probably how they both got popular in the 60s, have constant fan debates over who the best lead was/is, they're both what I call "dad franchises", and how despite their long-running success they still feel somewhat B-list (maybe A-minus list?) compared to the Star Warses and Batmans and Indiana Joneses of the world. This is all purely from an American perspective, though, not sure how it looks from the UK. The best way I can describe it is if they were both people and single friends of mine I'd probably try hooking them up.

If the film makers had a list of 'Things From Austin Powers That We Can Never Do', James Bond & Blofeld being brothers had to have been the top one, right?

Most of those issues in Spectre didn't actually bother me too much, but my biggest gripe was the torture scene at the end. Swann suddenly deciding she loves Bond (which actually got a laugh from the crowd I saw it with), drilling the brain worked or maybe it didn't?!, and Blofeld's "What's that James? Oh never mind..." where Blofeld ignores Bond obviously doing something is just so campy. The campy and funny elements remind me of the latest Godzilla movie. "This silly poo poo was a huge part of the original series, we have to pay homage to it and include those bits!" No you don't. I don't need a Blofeld who's kind of an idiot if it doesn't fit the rest of the series. I don't need a car button that plays cheesy classical music in the middle of a car chase to the death. I don't need a woman seemingly randomly falling in love with Bond if she's hated or distrusted him up to that point.

The problem with the Craig series, the same problem with The Office, Stranger Things, Fast & Furious... you name it. Characters become cartoonish exaggerations of themselves as the series goes on. The traits that audiences associate with a character get amplified over time until the series jumps the shark and fizzles.

It's a reoccurring cycle in the franchise. The movies gradually build up in outlandishness, then is followed by something a little more grounded. You Only Live Twice -> On Her Majesty's Secret Service; Moonraker -> For Your Eyes Only; Die Another Day -> Casino Royale.
