SNATTER'S ALIVE?!?!
Noted sources of truth the New York Post and the Daily Mail are reporting that a DC physician has filed for divorce from her political consultant husband, and is claiming that he is having an affair with Rep. Ilhan Omar.

quote:

Dr. Beth Mynett says her cheating spouse, Tim Mynett, told her in April that he was having an affair with the Somali-born US representative — and that he even made a “shocking declaration of love” for the Minnesota congresswoman before he ditched his wife, alleges the filing, submitted in DC Superior Court on Tuesday.

A money quote:

quote:

Beth Mynett said in the filing that the most concerning thing about the excursion was her hubby’s decision to “put his son in harm’s way by taking him out in public with Rep. Omar, who at that time had garnered a plethora of media attention along with death threats, one rising to the level of arresting the known would-be assassin that same week.”

Omar's campaign has employed Tim Mynett and paid his company $250k for consulting fees and travel costs, which Dr. Mynett alleges were funneled to her husband for illicit purposes.

The right-wing Twittersphere is, of course, buzzing. But my favorite so far comes from OANN's Chief White House Correspondent:

quote:

Ladies, are we being too hard on @IlhanMN? Who among us has not dumped their brusband and sought a legal US citizen to marry - just before the immigration authorities arrive with deportation papers?

He believes everything everyone tells him is true and has no concept of object permanence, so alt-righties line up to be on his show because he’ll go “wooooow, maaaaan, shiiiiiiit” at literally anything they say because it’s all brand new and mind blowing to him.

I wonder how much long term damage blowhards like Thunderf00t and The Amazing Atheist have done to secularization.

I remember thinking 10-15 years ago that rational skepticism could be the key to long term unfucking society. It could combat magical thinking and remove huge catalysts for bigotry and hate.

Then even “respectable” atheists like Dawkins went full CHUD on anti-feminism, tossing out mountains of actual evidence for patriarchy and went with :biotruths: bullshit instead.

It’s probably also that as a group white men are terrible people. And white men are waaay overrepresented among atheists. In retrospect I was incredibly naive to think that a bunch of affluent white dudes could (or would even bother trying to) help make social progress.

There is really and truly nothing about being atheist or secular that combats magical thinking and bigotry and hate.

Just being an atheist doesn’t do much to combat magical thinking. Arriving at the conclusion of atheism through rational skepticism, however, is anti-magical thinking.

Religiosity is the strongest indicator for supporting regressive and hateful policies. It transcends every demographic from gender to orientation to income to race.

I never said that everything would be fixed without religion. Just that some of the biggest catalysts for hate and anti-intellectualism would be eliminated.

I think this is a correlation and causation problem. People who buy into dumb arguments for hate and policies that go against their own interests are likely to also be ready to buy into arguments for why Gautama Buddha wants you to raze a Muslim village.

Right before the skeptics movement got ripped apart by our own version of gamergate, a big lingering question at the conventions was whether religion and skepticism could co-exist. The people I followed pointed out that everyone had beliefs, and that while religion as we know/practice it would ideally go away at some point, it's not really the enemy. It doesn't matter if people go to church, regularly see a psychic, go hard on QAnon, or follow some alt-right nutjob. The focus should be on helping people ask questions and actually understand things.

The new atheists crowd were still obsessed with just mocking people and hitting easy targets. The biggest shock for young me was seeing just how much of the anti-creationist crowd was just there to beat up an easy target. When I went to college, I almost joined the school's skeptics club but I turned and pretty much ran away after meeting the people in charge of it. An unholy mix of wanting to continue "deep" philosophy 101 dives on Sunday mornings and hold wonderful activities like letting/encouraging people to do "draw Muhammad" jokes in the main square (isn't South Park so funny!!!!). And also complaining about the school paying for an on-site Muslim spiritual adviser.

I guess the writing was always on the wall. But yeah, I can't help but think about how much damage they've done. I'm kind of embarrassed to claim that I'm an atheist anymore.

Not just mock her, but specifically go on a galaxy brained rant asking how any American woman could complain about harassment when Muslim women were being stoned. That was a wild time. And yeah, you had poo poo like Bill Maher being lauded as an atheist hero while he's arguing against germ theory. Someone once said that as lovely as GamerGate was, it was like the blood testing scene in The Thing. It sucks and it's going to hurt, but it's probably better to know who the monsters are in your crowd. Except it turned out that most of the core of the atheist/skeptics movement was rotten.
