At least someone has a good take™:

Fake edit: Playing it is still allowed, you are just not allowed to actually bring up the concept in verbal or text-based communication. All sports commentary on it shall from now on be entirely just making metaphors and such that are about what's going on without actually describing it.

You don't choose between VBLklassik and VBLextra. You're in the former by law and may opt-in to the latter.

VBLklassik is part of the pension insurance scheme for public employees as a result of the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Memberships and contributions to VBLklassik are mandatory for qualified employees and not something you opt-in to.

VBLextra is an additional insurance scheme as part of the "betriebliche Altersvorsorge" and closer to the "Entgeltumwandlung" opportunities you would get in the private sector. Whether this is a good financial choice for you is a highly individual question to which the answer depens on a lot of different factors. Especially how much you expect to be your taxable income after the postdoc or if you expect to change back into the private sector or to leave Germany. That is too complex an issue to give tailored advice for in this forum. If you're lucky, Finanztip.de might have a somewhat up-to-date flowchart on whether or not it makes sense and what are the numerical breakpoints. In a very broad strokes kinda way, as long as you earn less than €54,450 € p.a. (West Germany) and your employer pays at least ~18-20% in addition to what you put into VBLextra (e.g. You pay €500, they pay €100) a contribution to VBLextra will probably be relatively close to a financially neutral transaction with maybe a very slight trend towards being a good idea in the long term. It'd probably not worth it in the short and medium-term, if you are already feel like you're short on money right now.

The brochure I got says that with the VBLextra the contributions would be 4% from my employer, and 0% from me. "VBLextra is a capital-funded occupational pension scheme. The contributions amount to 4.00 percent of your pensionable salary, paid solely by your employer. " whereas with VBLklassik I pay 1.41% and my employer pays 6.45%. So I'd get a 1.41% tax break each month in exchange for slightly less overall pension contribution from my employer?

The 1.41% would decrease your taxable income resulting in lower taxes. They would also decrease the amount of contributions made to the mandatory insurances (pension, healthcare, unemployment), so you're slightly reducing the what you get out of those insurance systems.

If your employer pays money into a occuptational pension insurance without you yourself having to pay anything into it, that's basically free money and a good idea (in most cases).
