totalnewbie posted:Yeah, it's pretty disappointing to hear Obama say something like that but, then again, being disappointed by Obama is just a continuation of the trend. I don't know, it seemed to me like his point was basically "if you want stuff to change, it takes action, not just complaining." Probably could have said it better, but I think the message is valid.

He is completely trivializing the things that people are getting called out for. "how you didn’t do something right or used the wrong verb" - people aren't getting "cancelled" because they used the wrong verb, they're getting cancelled because they demonstrated that they're completely and unapologetically racist. While there are some people whose egos are fed entirely by virtue signaling, most people don't feel good about having to call somebody out because we'd rather that the call-out not have been necessary in the first place. And what do you consider action? Are protests actions or complaints? If you attend a protest in person, that's an action but if you make your feelings known online, that's just complaining? Why is that? A protest doesn't DO anything - they're just complaining in person. What's the difference except the medium through which you're expressing yourself? Or should people just not protest? Rather than COMPLAIN about people using social media to express themselves, maybe he should look at the people who are being incredibly lovely and tell them to cut it the gently caress out because they can't get away with that poo poo anymore.

I also like how it brings up that the idea that the most impoverished Americans are better off on a "global scale" and doesn't see this as a grievous indictment of the global downhill poo poo-roll brought to you by capitalists and imperialism. As if the most poverty-stricken nation's ascribe to some other *crazy* economic system that just fails by nature, instead of literally having the fingers of developed nations taking their tater tots for themselves every lunch period for centuries.

Young people trending left doesn’t mean there aren’t millions of that girl. Especially if you’re looking at a self-selecting group like business students. Could be worse though. She isn’t in engineering.

Good guy, but he's deep into the "both sides are corrupt" and "AOC is stupid and crazy" stuff. When I'm on Facebook these days, which isn't much, I just don't even respond to it. I probably should but it's a waste of time and energy to try to reason with that particular brand of centrism.

borkencode posted:I had a cousin argue with me that it doesn’t matter that wages have not kept up with the increase in productivity because we can buy giant flat screen TVs and smartphones. Someone actually posted a really good Atlantic article that talks about a refutation to this dumb argument over in USPol: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/11/income-inequality-getting-worse/601414/ Basically there's a lot more competitions amongst companies trying to wring money out of people who have it than there is trying to meet the needs of people who don't. This keeps the price of mid and upper tier consumer goods from rising too much while the absolute cheapest stuff is getting more expensive and putting the squeeze on poor people. If you factor this into the way we currently track poverty a whole lot more people are just barely scraping by than are officially tracked. It's probably the best refutation of "well your iPhone is still cheap!!!" I've seen. Also lol on what planet are iPhones still cheap.

Julio Cruz posted:except they’re even more expensive, you’re just not paying the cost all at once This caught me off guard because in the late 90s when a brand new phone was like $60 you could get a phone for free if you signed up for 2 years. Somewhere along the way this transition to a payment plan for a $700 phone on top of the regular monthly fee.
