I didn't bother looking too far into the thread beyond the first page but somebody working for a dice company saying he has no idea how fair they are sounds really dubious. Like, yeah, you need to do some quality control even for dice that determine whether or not your orc missed, not just whether or not you've won this round of craps.

From what I read of how Chessex works they buy dice from an overseas supplier and re-package them.
It's really the responsibility of the supplier to be doing random sampling and QA work.
Mind you, with injection-molded parts defects are pretty obvious, I'd be surprised if they didn't pass through a size gate or something.

You should, Broke Brain Dice-Man comes back page 3 to get mad some more

His brilliant suggestion for ensuring all dice are 'fair'? Calipers! :downs: because they absolutely have the time to hand-measure each and every motherfucking die that comes through, dontcha know. Nevermind that this will do nothing for defects in the injection process.

I mean FFS there's always going to be minor deviations that occur while molding. But as long as your injection/clamp pressure stay the same and there's no major variances in the material you'll get a reproducible part within tolerances.

Mind you this is probably a cheap chinesium mold so your tolerance band is probably rather large.

They do randomly sample dice for QA but they use the first die they made to determine which ones they test and unfortunately that die is, unbeknownst to them, defective.

Measuring with calipers wouldn't even test the distribution of the die results. You'd have to roll them a bunch, track the results, and see if there are any weird bumps in the line.

yeah some poor fucker in guangzhou is gonna take a pair of calipers to your 3 dollar unknown-resin die are you kidding me

Like gently caress unless you're polishing each side of the die you're going to have imperfections! Like, what is your loving datum on a D20? Do you just pick 1 side and go with it?
Even the difference in the engraving will cause minute deviations! Like, you remove more material engraving 20 than you do 1, making it 0.00001g lighter on that one side!

NOWHERE in their advertising, their website, anywhere is there a guarantee of precision manufacturing.

What gets me about the while thing is you could have a pretty messed up die and it'll still serve as a valid randomizer for the point gamers use the randomizer for. Until a player learns their die well enough that he can manipulate it unseen via some sort of trick throw, the effect of an unbalanced die will be unintentional.

When a player spends hours learning a non transferrable skill with a randomly defective tool, which could be fixed by handing them another $1 die or making them use a free app on their cell phone, all to cheat at pretend storytelling, maybe you don't actually want to hang out with that person.

I think people think they're going to have a die that skews 75-25 high low or something, but if its shaped right and the density is close, it's probably like 501-499 unless you're intentionally manipulating the thing.

This was a trap, wasn't it?

It's a 100% chance that poster is the insufferable D&D player who have have a full blown tantrum if someone else touched their dice. When I started playing in a group and I was the new guy, one of the players told me always ask to use someone else's dice because eventually if you just grab for them there is that one lunatic who will flip the table and scream at you for touching his "lucky d20" or getting your fingerprints on their brushed chrome $200 set.
