Milk's on them.

I don't think I saw anything in the leaks about ship battles. I know there's Star Destroyers, but like they just sort of show up and menace things, then Palpatine gets Windu'd, then ??????????. There aren't even ship battles in this Star Wars come the gently caress on. Gimme my fuckin' X-wings!!!

I'm gonna be real: it's really looking like Last Jedi might be better than Rise of Skywalker. And I didn't hate Last Jedi, I thought it was really fun and teased us with a bunch of cool directions things could go in. It just totally backtracked on all that stuff and left us with nothing good left.

Watch the movie again and I swear, you can pinpoint the exact moment a Disney executive pointed at the screen and said "no, cut this part out and add the ending our marketing team says will get us more money".

After listening to those music tracks I couldn't find anything new that stuck out or felt memorable but that's without watching the movie for context. I just hear the old, familiar themes in a few of those pieces. Meh. This whole trilogy is meh.

If they make more Star Wars then it's time to have John Williams retire and give the reigns to the GoT music dude.

Williams has already said that The Rise of Skywalker is the last Star Wars he'll ever do. Dude's almost 90, can't travel much anymore, I have to imagine he's nearing retirement.

Can't blame Boyega for being like "gently caress this" after going from co-lead with his own narrative to comic relief exposition guy, on top of everything else. Kind of surprising given how much Abram's supposedly loves him but I guess writing themselves into a Palpatine shaped corner limits their options.

I really feel bad for Kelly Marie Tran, who got thrown to the chud fandom wolves over TLJ and is apparently a glorified background character in TROS. Boyega and the other principal cast will be fine but her career might be toast.

There's pretty obviously a big space battle at the end, I think it'd be the kind of thing to that'd be hard to describe in detail without going like "there's just thousands of laser blasts like PEW PEW PEW PEW and then all these fighters whiz by like EEEEOOOORRRRROOOOAA and there's a fat guy in an X-wing that's like "OH poo poo" and he explodes..."

Edit: Curious there's no mention of the DS-SD Cruisers (that's "Death Star-Star Destroyer") in this latest bit. Maybe they want to focus on new revelations here but I'd think a description of their firepower would warrant a mention. Do they seriously just SAY they have Death Star rays but never put them to good use?!

I read that Boyega doesn't think the movies did enough to establish the new trio dynamic, and it occurred to me that I legitimately can't remember if Rey and Poe have actually spoken to each other.

(Seriously though, I'm looking forward to this. I never really had any expectations for this one and while it all sounds impressively dumb, it doesn't sound like it does anything to outwardly piss me off, so as long as I can spend some more time with these characters and see some spaceships go kablooey I'll be a happy camper.)

I get the feeling the "trio" in this trilogy was supposed to be Kylo, Rey and Finn. Kylo looking at Finn at the start of TFA and fighting him at the end might have meant they were supposed to have a character dynamic as well, but then things happened, Poe lived and everyone got separated into their own sealed stories that aren't allowed to touch each other because ???

There's definitely been a shot of them firing in one of the trailers but with that and the Sith Troopers (who seem like they show up right at the end only lmao), I'm really thinking this film is being cut to pieces to just try and fit everything into a feasible runtime.

I'd wager the space battles are choreographed/animated by a specialist just like fight scenes are done by stunt coordinators and not the story director(JJ in this case). Sure they give input and direct any story beats but most of the shooting and flying is someone else.

It'll break half a billion domestic, easily.

There might be some talk about how the film "ought" to have made eighty gazillion dollars, and Disney messed that up somehow, but it'll still break half a billion.

You don't spend $4billion for a franchise only to make a pittance on a movie. Break even would be bad. Just a hair over break even would still have bad optics.

Lol they weren't happy 2 years ago. This must have been a nightmare for the upper management for the last 2 years. You can see the wreck coming but you have to keep a smile and try to minimize the damage over 2 years. At least they'll have closure.

with the way the mandalorian is being received it wouldn't surprise me if they shift star wars over to just tv series for awhile

and then a decade from now they'll start up a new new trilogy and the last shot of the first trailer will be either daisy ridley or adam driver

I distinctly remember reading a script or treatment from TFA where Kylo (Sith), Rey (Jedi), and Finn (Force Sensitive/Grey Jedi-type) are basically the center. The way the conflict is set up in TFA definitely follows that. But it got spun off into whatever the hell we ended up with, plus a shoehorned romance thing between Rey & Kylo that has no build-up or development at all.

lofi posted:

There's a shot in a couple of the tv spots that shows a red Death Star type laser hitting a planet and busting it up - you don't see it coming from a ship though. So the Death Star Destroyers are definitely in there.

If the Kenobi and Rogue One shows are half as successful as the Mandalorian we will probably get a bunch more live action stuff to fill out gaps between the PT - OT - ST, and then some sort of follow up movie in a decade where they can iron out/retcon all the kinks and take advantage of the fact that all the main ST cast are still young enough to plausibly do a bunch more movies. People love the characters in the ST, they just are underwhelmed by the stories being told.

You can't even include JJ in the blame here because he was straight up begging Disney for more time to do reshoots and editing to try and staple TFA together into something worth a gently caress, but they told him to eat poo poo and turn in a cut for Christmas

One thing you can say in JJ's favor is that he never really tried to sugarcoat how rushed TFA was and has said as much on numerous occasions. This is at least way more honest than rian's "not liking the movie is a russian psyop" shtick

I think what pissed Disney off is that they were forced to realize with Solo that star wars, as iconic as it is, can't run on auto pilot and sell itself annually just on the strength of the star wars name. They thought they could just do the MCU thing of take a spec script, change the branding, give it to a sufficiently cowed director and get a cool 800 mil per annum forever, but whoops, people actually care about star wars enough to make noise about it and now the shine is permanently tarnished.
