So my girlfriends parents have two greyhounds, both ex-racers. The older one, Lloyd, is really the runt of the litter with a massive over bite that has resulted in his front teeth being removed and a sticking out rib bone. Recent my girlfriends dad has been really ill with cancer, and he passed away just a few days ago. Before he had died but while he was getting worse, Lloyd had come in from the garden without one of his claws plodding blood through the house. He's fairly dumb even by greyhound standards so it was written off as an accident. However while my girlfriends dad had to be taken to a hospice Lloyd was sent to live with my girlfriend's sister and her two dogs. He was well behaved until we got back there after their father had passed away, and the floor was covered in blood, and he was missing more claws. I said straight away he must be doing it because of stress and anxiety so we bandaged him up and he went to the vets, who basically said the same thing. They said not to leave his muzzle on when they aren't there to prevent any more damage because he may choke if he's sick, but I think he may need one of those cones or something because he's doing real harm to himself. Here he is looking a little happier after his visit to the vets with a professional bandage job: He's actually quite dignified for a greyhound.

Vet is gonna check a urine sample but he thinks we let her out to pee too often, and she’s just used to going every couple of hours. So she just sometimes goes again a couple of hours after we go to bed.

Don't you have issues with Gallo chasing prey if he's off-leash? I'm not ever allowed to have Abby off-leash if it's not a confined area.

Bonnie chases squirrels off leash but I don’t really mind, she’s terrible at it. She gets too excited and barks while stalking them

The organization I adopted from is very strict about the leash policy. I can definitely see why given the risk of chasing prey into the street.

My partner's parents adopted ex-racing greyhounds and I'm pretty sure it's illegal to let them off a lead. They need to be walked on a lead and with a muzzle at all times.

Yeah I've heard that's the case in some countries, like Australia (?)

I live in the UK, should have mentioned that. It's partly because the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is a charity but the government essentially outsourced animal cruelty policing to them years ago so they actually had a surprising amount of legal powers. They could arrest or force entry to locations but right up until 2006 they were basically official animal cruelty investigators. So these days if an RSPCA investigator thinks you're mistreating an animal they collect a bunch of evidence and shop you to the police, who don't give enough of a gently caress to do their own investigation so just charge you. It's good when it goes right (most of the time) but bad when it goes wrong.

She loves to chase squirrels in the forest, but I wouldn't say it's an issue. She enjoys the chase and slows down once she gets close to them. I never let her off-leash in any area close to a road, so no chance she'll go haring off after something and get hit. Also, her recall is good enough that I can get her to disengage from most chases. I'm happy we don't live in a country with strict leash and muzzle regulations. Gello gets so much pleasure just from running around in the forest. She had zoomies today and was bouncing like a springbok, and it was great.

To be fair here I think it's only a requirement for ex racers because they've been trained to chase/catch things. If it's a dog you had as a puppy I think normal rules apply (i.e it becomes a problem only if something actually happens).

In the US pretty much all the greys are ex-racers, unless they are show dogs or something

actionjackson posted:In the US pretty much all the greys are ex-racers, unless they are show dogs or something Greyhound racing has been illegal in South Africa since the 1950s. There are still underground sports hunting rings and most of the dogs are rescues from the townships, but there are no specific rules and regulations regarding them. They're just another dog breed.

So the one bad thing about off-leash walking is the sheer number of scars Gello picks up on her legs. Today was really bad, she ripped a huge hole in her leg that needed to be stitched. That by itself would have been bad enough, but the vet also found a lump on her other back leg. We're seeing a specialist next week to cut it out and biopsy, and I'm already freaking out.
