We're really not in trouble until we see evidence that the virus is spreading on its own outside of China. At the moment all known cases are from people who came directly from there so this is just necessary precaution. It's better to overreact to this stuff than to wait until it's too late

I think we are going to see a lot more enforced 2-week quarantines now that the CDC has confirmed that people can test negative for the virus while it is in the incubation stage and still become sick later. The tactic of test everyone and then let the negative results walk seems a lot riskier now. https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2020/a0131-cdc-telebriefing-2019-novel-coronavirus.html At around 4:00 into the briefing audio. Like seriously this thing is way less contagious and less deadly than a lot of the diseases all those wine moms refuse to vaccinate their children against. Measles has an R0 of 12-18 for comparison. Mumps is 10-12. Whooping cough is 12-17. Diphtheria has an R0 of 6-7 and a fatality rate of 5-10% in healthy people and loving 20% in the very young and old. Here's a pic of the bus driver who took all the evacuated Brits to their secure facility for quarantine: And here's one of the evacuees: She looks remarkably cheerful for someone who has spent hours sitting on a bus wearing that, and uhhhhh maybe at least ask the bus drivers to wear some sort of protective gear???

Here the NYT on how contagious it's likely to be, based on what's currently known. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive...nu#transmission Of course one should not just look at R0, but to quote the Times: quote:Here’s how that works. In the animation below, a group of five infected people could spread the virus to about 368 people over just five cycles of infection.

The numbers China is reporting are trash. The real number of deaths is in the many thousands. We’ll probably never know. We have a country that is willing to do everything and anything for their economy (child labor, counterfeiting, sweatshops, currency manipulation just to name a few). You think they will effectively shut down their economy for several weeks and quarantine their largest cities for a virus that has only caused a couple hundred deaths? Not a chance in hell that happens. The numbers they are claiming is a steaming pile of garbage and is intellectually dishonest. No country on the planet (and especially not that country) would be taking the measures that they are if the numbers that they are claiming are anywhere close to accurate.
