I'm reading John M. Barry's The Great Influenza. I really appreciate that it starts with several chapters on the major researchers, the state of clinical research at the time, and the state of American medical education at the time (dreadful). It had an insight I'd never seen before. The reason it was known as "the Spanish influenza" was that Spain, a neutral in WWI, wasn't censoring its newspapers to improve morale. So Spanish news mentioned what was going on with the epidemic, while the UK, France, Germany, and the US had it locked down.

The amount of people who will go bankrupt from medical bills resulting from this is going to be insane. I did some math to see how bad:

Some doctors have mentioned they expect 60% of the population to eventually get the virus. The USA has a population of 327 million, 60% would be 196.2 million infected. Of those infected, 13% are serious (or worse) cases that require hospitalization, so 25.5 million who might be looking at bills for advanced life support. That's a lot of potential medical bankruptcies.

If you're wondering where in getting the % from, I've been following Dr John Campbell on YouTube, he does daily updates and explains the CDC/WHO statistics.

Lol I expect society would collapse far before the infection rate approached anywhere near 60%. Medical bills are a meaningless issue when it comes to an infection rate that high.

Yeah don't worry. Your armed-to-the-teeth Nazi militias will start culling the infected much sooner.

Plus I don't think any kind of insurance matters once the medical system collapses and that's probably at around what...5 million infected?

Has anyone else noticed it seems like the WHO (or is it CDC?) is acting more like the World Bank than what they are, an organization for stopping pandemic diseases? Like, since the beginning the they've been downplaying the disease, praising China, resisting calls for stricter methods or better quarantines, etc. It just seems a little weird, like they're more concerned with the possible economic impact than actually putting a stop to coronavirus.

A coronavirus (same family as 2002's SARS, but also other harmless stuff) has been reported in China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Japan and (announced just now) the US. One case so far in Seattle, the CDC says they expect further cases.

It has killed six people so far in the Wuhan area of China since December. There are 308 confirmed cases (also in China I think). Experts from Imperial College estimate the actual number of patients at 1700.

Well here we are a month later. Can someone post the current stats on where we are?

What annoys me the most is coronavirus is exposing all the cracks in the system, showing how hosed everything really is, but isn't enough of a critical juncture force to upset the current hosed up global political-economy system.

We were in Cambodia in 2017. It was pretty rough. The ceiling of the very newly built customs hall we were in at the airport collapsed during a light rainstorm. The hotel owner was complaining that he was going to have to pay taxes next year. We asked if it was a hotel or tourism tax. His response was, "no, like, they're just instituting taxes in general"

If you think Japan's response is bad, Cambodia has potential to get hit particularly hard. A measurable chunk of their exports is sand they sell on a flat rate contract to Singapore.

Some friends of mine travelled to Cambodia a couple years ago and the standard advice for if you got sick or injured was "Get to Thailand or Vietnam as fast as possible you do not want to see the inside of a Cambodian hospital".

Theoretically? I suppose if they let you across the border with obvious coronavirus symptoms.

And while it would be a lot cheaper, healthcare in Canada for a non-resident is very much not free and I can imagine an ICU stay would still add up to a fair bit of cash.

http://www.williamoslerhs.ca/patients-and-families/preparing-for-your-visit-or-stay/billing-and-patient-accounts/hospital-rate-schedule

This will give you an idea of the rates for non residents. Long story short it could still end up being over $100k if you need to spend a long time in an ICU.
