This is on the back of a twitter discussion where a guy posted a poll of Hispanic voters in FL that showed that 70% (69% actually  ) prefer Hispanic and that only 1% prefer Latinx. Scott Braddock chimes in and says he's never heard anyone in Texas use that term irl, Gene Wu claps back that that's because he doesn't interact with people under 40, and now the mentions are full of stuff like this. I've seen similar polls that show minuscule support from the Hispanic community around the term Latinx nationally, wondering what y'all see/hear around these parts.

I have similarly only heard it from organizer types but they were at least Hispanic

I remember seeing @ to combine o/a more often in the past but that didn’t catch on for some reason, maybe the gender binary

I've seen a case made for latine as a gender neutral, since like that's what you'd use in latin, or something, but I doubt it will catch on.

Honestly, most of the Hispanic people in the area I grew up in just referred to themselves as Mexican. Other than that, I've always heard either Hispanic or Latino. Only heard Chicano regularly used by a college professor. Never heard Latinx used outside of the internet.

What's the argument for Latinx when Hispanic is already gender-neutral?

zoux
Apr 28, 2006

Dunno how any of the romance languages are going to handle the de-gendering of language but I'm not sure if it's possible. Luckily in english all our forks are androgynous.

Arcella posted:

Well I'm extremely cynical so

This poll found only 2% nationally prefer Latinx, and that there was no disparity among women or young Hispanics as some have speculated.

I am not Hispanic or Latinx so I have no personal stake in the matter and will respect whatever term people prefer to be described by... but it occurs to me that any term that is only ever used online, because pronouncing it aloud is an unpleasant experience, is maybe not the most viable of terms for incorporation into the modern vernacular.

Hispanic has been its own can of worms forever because there's an argument about whether Spanish heritage should be dignified as such since that heritage is rooted in the brutal enslavement of indigenous peoples. This is very, very far from a ubiquitous opinion, and anecdotally I've talked to some folks whose families are from Cuba or Mexico who think of Spain sort of as the motherland

I see Latinx used a lot in real life, but I'm in a lot of social justice-y circles so that doesn't mean it's universal. It's pretty common now at colleges and in LGBTQ communities, because it's more gender-neutral than Latino and Hispanic is also a term folks tend to shy away from here. I think it's sort of generational, sort of depends-on-your-circles. But my fiancee is Latina, and she just says her feelings about "Latinx" are complicated.

Yeah no poo poo, but if you're going to make up dumb new words, you may as well do it within an already existing framework in a predecessor language that just got dropped somewhere along the way.

Also it's apparently pretty common in Spain.

And also already to some extent in normal Spanish words used everywhere, I guess.

Not commenting on anything else, but when it comes to Latin America language evolution, any appeal to how the language gets used in Spain is probably not going to go over smoothly.

Everyone is focusing on the completely inept response to COVID-19 from the Feds, but listening to this panel all day makes me feel like the state health and emergency officials have a realistic perspective and realistic capacity to handle an outbreak (depending on severity of course). Better than Lombardy anyway.

You guys seeing any "social distancing" where you are in the state? Cancelled events, emptier streets and restaurants, etc.
