my brother lives in brooklyn but i havent encouraged him to get out because the only place he could go really would be my elderly parents house in massachusetts, and would have to go through a place like penn station in order to get there which seems like that would put them at risk more than him staying there would put him at risk. plus he lives out in bay ridge which is probably a bit calmer than the rest of the city

I know you're joking but everyone talking breathlessly no pun intended about an open source ventilator is playing right into the delusion that this is a nuclear war or something. We might not be able to turn a tractor factory into a bomber factory like in WW2 but our normal industrial base should be able to easily scale up making a basic machine like that, we just don't have the mechanisms in place to take poo poo over, take over intellectual property, and force everyone to build pandemic poo poo all day

My local grocery store even has toilet paper! I live a block from a public school, so NYC closing all schools will make the neighborhood pretty quiet. I'd suggest from him just to stock up and stay home. No need to travel if he doesn't have to.

If he's under 60 and in relatively decent health, I would personally isolate rather than take a train to see elderly.

I got unintentionally hosed by this whole panic-buying thing. - Moved away from Seattle on the 21st of February (just before the announcement of COVID-19 deaths.) -- I may have already had coronavirus? I actually flew back from apartment hunting in the Chicago area on the 18th of January, and got seriously sick a couple of days later. I assumed it was the flu, but I didn't have the barfiness that usually goes along with it. First cases in Seattle were reported on the 15th, so maybe I caught it at the airport. - I actually stopped buying food for a while so I could go through my existing stock and wouldn't have to transport it halfway across the country. I was seriously broke until two days ago (unexpected expenses associated with the move, gently caress you you goddamn expensive moving company,) so only had enough for really basic food items. - Paid on Friday, went to store, OH LOOK PANIC BUYING I visited three stores in the area. Toilet paper was out, rice was out, flour was out, yeast was out, bread was out, eggs were almost out (although they had the liquid eggs - which work well on my griddle anyway.) Normally I'd have plenty of this stuff sitting around, but again - I was trying to avoid transporting extra items that I could just buy on the other end. I was able to pick up a 50-pound bag of rice at a nearby Asian grocery store, which isn't all that bad since I like rice. Yay for racist assholes, I guess? I'm going to try to find a larger Asian grocery somewhere, to see if they also have stock of other essentials (like TP - I have a six-pack and I live alone so I'm not as bad off as some, but I do prefer to buy two of the 24-packs and buy once I break open the next pack.) It's actually a little interesting, because I'm realizing that my food preferences tend towards the processed and shelf-stable - very prepper-like. I currently have rice, SPAM, beans, and pasta in my pantry - because I like them. But other than the beans (because I spent my last on them a week and a half ago,) everything else is stuff that came with me that I fortunately didn't eat.

Facebook has been almost nothing but panic posting today. My wife and I are set since I'm a teacher and she works in a daycare, so we can take care of our son, but there are a lot of turbo-hosed people who have no idea what to do. I think babysitters are going to be making bank for a while. The Government was talking about shutting down for the rest of the school year, which would be horrendous since they would essentially be condemning a lot of families to becoming single-family earners, and single parents are hyper-turbo-hosed if they can't find someone to care for their kids. I think they're going to have to enact some manner of EI for families who have to stay home.

Trying to get people not to endanger themselves and (much more importantly) others feels like one of those games where you get game over if the npc you're escorting dies, and they keep throwing grenades at their own ankle and not taking cover when enemies appear.
