my brother mailed me a thumbdrive with media on it when i lived in sask, and one of the things was the first season of psycho - pass, which i kinda enjoyed, but assumed was standalone. is the second season worth watching? also legit neon genesis evangelion rules, and before i had watched it i heard folk were like, FURIOUS, at the ending. i was expecting, i don't even know, something? the congratulations thing made so much sense to me.

iirc they did the ending the way they did because they ran out of did u see end of eva? assuming so but if you haven't u should watch it its amazing, satisfies that itch of "ok wtf was actually happening." turns out the answer is lots of cool poo poo. I forget everything about psycho-pass lol sorry. if u like akira u might like the metropolis anime I saw it when I was like 13 lol on a minivan dvd player and it was awesome |

take the moon posted:I will watch anime robot arm boxing it's separated into parts that are all their own self-contained story more-or-less(though you get more out of them by watching all of it since some characters make recurring appearances) part 1: fighting vampires with sun kung-fu, also everything is so unbelievably gay that it somehow loops around to being straight as hell part 2: part 1 but with an interesting and hilarious protagonist(see gif), still gay as ever part 3: world tour with punching ghosts that have insanely specific powers, gay as hell and i'm glad of it part 4: a group of teens work together to stop anime david bowie's killing spree. 90% of it is just them using their magic ghost powers to gently caress with and/or scam each-other, it's great. somehow the least homoerotic part, which means it is still tremendously gay part 5: italian crime story starring a man that can make zippers. the most homoerotic part by loving miles which is not a complaint

back when we were dating, my spouse and i spent a period of time watching a miyazaki movie pretty much every time we hung out. it was great. it was at time where we were experiencing some rough stuff in the real world, so it was great to have a reliable escape into something beautiful and whimsical (and sometimes scary but never in an uncomfortable way). just a good time all around

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYUFBnAmK28 satoshi kon was an absolute master, rip tokyo godfathers is the best christmas movie, and i'm very happy that the recently-released dub cast a trans woman to voice Hana instead of the all-too-typical thing of having a cis actor play a trans character

Someone mentioned Satoshi Kon, so I'll second that if you want some interesting cerebral anime. The man was a master Some other animes I've enjoyed, outside of your classics (Akira, Ghost In The Shell, NGE etc) Serial Experiments Lain: Probably my favorite anime of all time. Just watch it, it's amazing. The whole thing is up on youtube from Funamation (at least in the US) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9kYAEyVjEY Ghost Hound: By the guy who directed Ghost In The Shell. Astral projection, Jazz, and Sake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtTQDbC07U8 Children Who Chase Lost Voices From Deep Below: It's been a while since I last saw this but the plot had something to do with a girl going to the underworld to rescue the soul of her dead mother. Reminded me a bit of Lovecraft's Dreamlands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TdR4Wxcays Mononoke: Not to be confused with Princess Mononoke, this anime follows the adventures of a medicine seller in feudal japan as he battles demons and things. I'd compare it to a japanese version of the witcher maybe?? Also the art style is gorgeous. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OJW9gZL33Q Mushi-shi: This is kind of the light-side cousin to Mononoke. Whereas Monoke gets dark as hell (in subject matter if not content), mushi-shi is pretty laid back and almost mellow. It's also about a kind of medicine man, but this guy can see the sort of neutral spirits(?) between this world and the next and kind of works cases involving them. There's not really any good promo material out there, but funamation has also made this available on youtube (at least in the U.S.) so here's episode one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdhR5XZNXbs Last but not least, I'll close out my list with an anime that I find very interesting. Welcome to The NHK! This anime interests me because it's one of the only one's I've seen where the protagonists are actual human adults in their mid 20's, and not high school children. The plot concerns an ensemble cast, but the main character is a 20 something year old shut in who has basically isolated himself from all human contact. One day he meets a young girl who promises to change his life. Unlike most anime's though, NHK refuses to fall into the "manic pixie dream girl" trope and actually ends up offering a probing look at depression and the existential struggles of human existence. here's a really terrible trailer that doesn't do the show much justice but was the best i could find: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYLsjJ8RThQ

we have a lot of similar tastes in anime. i've got a memory from Ghost Hound, that maybe you can help me: There's a scene in the first or second episode where the camera is driving past a forest scene. There's an amorphous black figure behind some trees, and its body changes suddenly before cutting away. i KNOW this happens in the first few episodes of Ghost Hound, but I went back and rewatched them and didn't find it. this sticks in my memory because it was legit chilling. i expected the series to be much more horror focused than it was. also tried showing my partner Mononoke, got in like 10 minutes before i remembered, oh poo poo, that first story arc is about abortion crimes |

i cannot stress how visually stunning Mononoke was and remains. Honestly i think it should have gotten the praise Madoka got for it's visual style. What blows my mind is the precursor series, Samurai Horror Tales, is otherwise totally forgettable.

Mononoke (the series) and serial experiments lain are two of the best shows I've ever seen. Some of the storytelling in mononoke was a little tired, and I wished there were more overarching plot, but overall a fantastic and beautiful show. Honestly the art style is so beautiful and interesting to watch that it almost makes it for me on that alone, but it's also really interesting and downright frightening at times Lain is just the most fascinatingly surreal show I've ever seen. The ideas of god and metaphysics in that show are so interesting, and the whole thing plays out like a dream that somehow tells a solid story without having an ounce of cohesion. |

Tekkonkonreet is a great and often somewhat overlooked anime film. Possibly because it's not really drawn completely anime style. The story is kind of endearing, bizarre, scary, and really visually stunning. The setting of Treasure Town is apparently at least partially based on the Osaka slum I used to work in. |

very very bad anime but worth watching if you're in the mood to laugh at bad anime: brynhildr in the darkness it's bad in the "jeez these characters are really dumb and this plot makes no sense" way, not in the "lots of gore, super uncomfortable to watch" way also if you can find yourself a copy of the dub of garzey's wing, it is also terrible in the best way

on the subject of so bad it's good anime: Ghost Hunt. It's like one of those ghost hunting TV shows but in anime form. It's dumb as hell. Here's episode 1 (funimation again): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=coRBLVwHjKE

I was invited to the anime thread, despite knowing little about anime. Let's see how this turns out... Uh, which Adult Swim circa early 2000's standards have already been mentioned? Bebop, Trigun, etc. Watching Akira on the SciFi channel at 1 am, those were the days huh? Space Battleship Yamato toys in cardboard boxes more valuable than the plastic bits, my my. Watching Ghibli with loved ones is a pure gift from heaven? Check. One Punch Man is amazing proof deconstructionism is alive and well? Check. I feel like I have nothing constructive to add, sorry anime goons. I'll just be friendly support, safe in the knowledge that Gigantor is not only the best anime theme-song, it is best theme-song in all television history. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eyFyIKDnHM
