SlothfulCobra posted:I hate the prepper mentality. These aren't long time preppers. Those guys had the guns and ammo for years, these are all first-time buyers. I noticed it was mostly pistols at first but then the semi-automatic rifles all got cleared out. Other places, some smaller out of the way gun stores still have stock. It's basically that the places with the cheap guns and ammo got cleared out. Anyways, I've been picking up things here and there and had luck at the local drug stores, I've some people gave up at the idea of long lineups and are trying to grocery shop as much as they can at a CVS/Walgreens. I have good luck getting milk there. Going to give HEB delivery a try. [No delivery for me until the end of the month ] Big K of Justice fucked around with this message at 15:36 on Mar 18, 2020 |

And it's all the cheap rear end range ammo clearing out first, which feels like a very new to guns sort of thing to do. Sad thing is a whole loving lot of these guns are going to end up out on the streets because they're being bought by irresponsible morons who will just leave them overnight in their unlocked car in the driveway and such.

Things are still relatively quiet in the Valley. The biggest news is that there's one case in Laredo and one case across the bridge in Tamaulipas, which means that it's only a matter of time before it comes to McAllen/Mission/Edinburg. No restaurant closures aside from Chik-Fil-A, WB, and Chipotle going to delivery/drive through only. All of the public schools are closed until April 6, and some indefinitely. Other than that, people are still prepping pretty hard. Today, HEB was only admitting a maximum of 75 people at a time and the line was wrapped around the store, with state troopers and city PD supervising. Some things were depleted, but lots of the bare essentials (TP, paper towels, cleaning supplies, eggs, milk, etc.) that have been going in the past two weeks were stocked to the max. A lot of students here are saying their parents won't let them leave the house, but it's usually too hot to go outside anyway from mid-April to mid-October, so this is nothing new for us... From what I can gather, non-urban coastal-ish Texas is pretty much what-evs so far. Everyone I talk to from the Valley up to Corpus and on through to Galveston and Beaumont has some places changing rules, but only the corporate chains are closing out en masse. Re: the hoarding talk above, I've been watching it for minute now and I can only assume every fatass in rural Texas has an outdoor freezer behind the trailer overflowing with putrid ground beef at this point. The amount of highly perishable poo poo being bought every day couldn't possibly be used and stored.

Captain Monkey posted:Plant tomatoes like now, okra, cucumbers, basil, dill, and chives and definitely plant some pepper bushes (tabasco, jalapeńo, or similar) they’ll grow great in the shade and produce tons of you water them enough. Have got all of the above along with a bunch of other herbs (spearmint & verbena to go with the peppermint along with some European staples like oregano, thyme, rosemary and parsley). Picked up a whole bunch of different tomato species from the local plant store. Absolutely blown away by the diversity on offer here compared to back home. Got some carrots and some beets in for roots but was warned it was getting a little late. I was told to plant the peppers (I have bell peppers, rather than spicy varieties since this is for nutrition) in full sun to get the best fruit. Is this wrong advice? Everything is growing about twice the rate I'm used to. I love this state. Edit: also put some milkweed around the place and monarchs and ladybugs (the latter for the pest control) have already moved in. This feels like gardening on easy mode. I have almost zero gardening knowledge, but I can call that one - jalapenos love sunlight. I think I remember reading that this is true for most chili pepper varieties, but IANAB. I was working on learning how to grow them when I (theoretically) get back to Thailand, but my mother grew them in the backyard in the gumbo soil on the coast down here when I was a kid and they grew so fast that I remember we had to give jalapenos away, heh.

Most of the truck drivers my company deals with are pretty old and are nervous, especially with rest stops shutting down some of them are refusing long trips. We’re having to give higher rates so they’ll actually go places, so expect the shelves to be stocked but prices to go up a bunch.

It's totally understandable, but it's also going to make things even worse during the crisis and make it harder to get out of the slump when things get better. What's the logistics industry been like anyways? Is this the result of trying to push down costs and not bothering to try cultivating younger drivers? Have they been hoping to not need new drivers soon and skip straight to automation? And in fact, how much has Amazon's domination over so much of the industry part of what's pushing down their profits and making them try cutting costs?
