If you're a particular kind of nerd, Dave Morris' Virtual Reality gamebooks (re-branded as Critical IF which is an awful and confusing name) are free on Kindle until Sunday. They're diceless, but you still have character attributes and gather possessions, so they're sort of like one step above Choose Your own Adventure. Anyway I enjoyed them a lot as a kid, maybe it's just nostalgia, but hey they're free. There's no shared series page for them but here's Down Among the Dead Men, a fun fantasy pirate romp: https://www.amazon.com/Down-Among-Dead-Critical-gamebooks/dp/1909905011

Friendly reminder that Angry Robot has their entire catalog on sale at the moment for 50% off, no minimum or maximum, if you use the code SHELFISOLATION. I snagged 3 books I'd been looking forward to for not only cheaper than they would have been off amazon BEFORE the coupon, but with the coupon it came up to like 9 bucks.

Global coronavirus lockdown has allowed me to: -put a dent in the backlog of fiction on my reading list (the less famous stories of HG Wells, unexpurgated Aristophanes, project gutenberg mystery stories collections, etc) -finally notice that John Ringo + Peter Watts have degrees in the same field yet are wildly different authors -figure out what kind of hard scifi story I really want to read Finished reading the Locke and Key Library, Classic Mystery And Detective Stories (published @1909) and Stanley Weyman's Fowl in the Pot short story was the standout story in the collection (its ending was ). http://www.gutenberg.org/files/2038/2038-h/2038-h.htm#The_Fowl_in_the_Pot A good goon author like SurreptitiousMuffin could do wonders reworking it to modern standards.

I grabbed Sixteenth watch by Mike Cole. I did enjoy one series I can't remember the name of but it has Known Devil as one of the books. Decent urban fantasy cop series. Basically each book will probably cost you somewhere in the $2 to $4 range so it's not like it's going to be a bank breaker if you pick a bad one.

I am doing one last poke, because nominations close tomorrow; after this I to never self-promote in the thread again. Book #1 of CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series is $2.99 on Kindle, https://www.amazon.com/Foreigner-10th-Anniversary-Book-ebook/dp/B006JHXPDW/ I've been reading her Gene Wars series, and all I can say is give it amiss unless you're a completionist. It's good, I like the characters, and a few interesting things are going on, but it's loving interminable. Book 1 just went on and on about nomads in a desert, book 2 looks like Alliance-Union but a millenia in the future, after a nanotech/genetic engineering war with a mysterious alien species. And it's not nearly as entertaining as that premise sounds. I'll finish book 2, but I just want it to be over.

Volume 01 of the SF-LOVERS digest reminded me just how long certain SF&F authors have been around for. C. J. Cherryh won the 1979 Hugo Best Short Story award, and was also a runner up for the same years Best Novel Hugo. Orson Scott Card was a runner-up for the 1979 Hugo novellete award, while Stephen R. Donaldson won the 1979 Campbell award for best new writer.

googling for more giant book series to check out as covid continues and it's Kate Elliott again: "the description stuck with me: an Afro-Celtic post-Roman icepunk Regency novel with airships, Phoenician spies, and the intelligent descendants of troodons." I'm going to have to pick up her Spiritwalker trilogy really really soon because I need to see how the hell this mashup works
