If you're a particular kind of nerd, Dave Morris' Virtual Reality gamebooks (re-branded as Critical IF which is an awful and confusing name) are free on Kindle until Sunday. They're diceless, but you still have character attributes and gather possessions, so they're sort of like one step above Choose Your own Adventure.

Anyway I enjoyed them a lot as a kid, maybe it's just nostalgia, but hey they're free. There's no shared series page for them but here's Down Among the Dead Men, a fun fantasy pirate romp: https://www.amazon.com/Down-Among-Dead-Critical-gamebooks/dp/1909905011

What’s the difference between lgbt science fic and straight science fic?

like would an alternate universe where the CIA actually invents gay bombs and gender bending lasers count?

cause that would be cool as gently caress

Global coronavirus lockdown has allowed me to:
-put a dent in the backlog of fiction on my reading list (the less famous stories of HG Wells, unexpurgated Aristophanes, project gutenberg mystery stories collections, etc)
-finally notice that John Ringo + Peter Watts have degrees in the same field yet are wildly different authors
-figure out what kind of hard scifi story I really want to read

Finished reading the Locke and Key Library, Classic Mystery And Detective Stories (published @1909) and Stanley Weyman's Fowl in the Pot short story was the standout story in the collection (its ending was :sparkles: ).

I grabbed Sixteenth watch by Mike Cole. I did enjoy one series I can't remember the name of but it has Known Devil as one of the books. Decent urban fantasy cop series.

Basically each book will probably cost you somewhere in the $2 to $4 range so it's not like it's going to be a bank breaker if you pick a bad one.

I am doing one last poke, because nominations close tomorrow; after this I :toxx: to never self-promote in the thread again. WorldCon is going digital but the awards are still on, and this would still be huge career-wise. If you liked the book, please chuck a nomination my way.

SurreptitiousMuffin posted:

I tend to avoid posting/engaging in discussion about my own book because it feels very Self-Important Writer Online, but if you liked The Dawnhounds please consider nominating me for the Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best Novel this year.

The SJVs are the annual New Zealand SF/F Awards and they’re normally pretty low-key, but they’re being held at WorldCon 78 this year and voted on by the Hugo Awards voters—anything on the shortlist will be read by a lot of serious writers, editors and agents. This could be my big break. This is apparently the biggest year for nominations in SJV history and there have been … about 500 nominations total, across all 14 categories, I believe of which about 150 are for Best Novel: your nomination really does matter. It’ll take you two minutes, and could change my life.

    * Do I need to be from New Zealand to nominate? Nope. Members of the NZ fan org that run the awards count for double, but absolutely anybody can nominate.
    * Is that the only award the book is up for? Our cover artist is up for Best Art, so if you dig the fungus skull please also chuck a nomination to Pepper Curry.
    * Isn’t Gideon the Ninth just going to kick your rear end? I mean it’s a better book than mine, but Tamsyn removed herself from the running because she’s Australian by bullshit legal technicality, and also I suspect to give us little fish a chance (since she’s probably gonna win the Hugo anyway). We’ve actually got a decent shot at the win. Odds are on The Absolute Book, but The Dawnhounds is a solid outside bet, and even getting on the shortlist would be huge.
    * Is there anybody else cool and good I should be aware of? Goon and friend of the show Casey Lucas is up for Best Production for Into The Mire and Best Short Fiction for A Shriek Across the Sky, first published in our very own Thunderdome and published professionally here. I know a few of y’all follow her writing, so show her some love.
I’m not interested in fake votes or goonrushing, but it seems like a lot of folks here genuinely liked the book, and if that’s you then chuck me a nomination and maybe actually change my life.

That nomination form is right here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfTIK1YJi6GBXX0lZobwDIsm8ZoB49dJSBgFAwp2hQ_-AaGdw/viewform

Book #1 of CJ Cherryh's Foreigner series is $2.99 on Kindle,

https://www.amazon.com/Foreigner-10th-Anniversary-Book-ebook/dp/B006JHXPDW/

I've been reading her Gene Wars series, and all I can say is give it amiss unless you're a completionist. It's good, I like the characters, and a few interesting things are going on, but it's loving interminable. Book 1 just went on and on about nomads in a desert, book 2 looks like Alliance-Union but a millenia in the future, after a nanotech/genetic engineering war with a mysterious alien species. And it's not nearly as entertaining as that premise sounds. I'll finish book 2, but I just want it to be over.

Volume 01 of the SF-LOVERS digest reminded me just how long certain SF&F authors have been around for.
C. J. Cherryh won the 1979 Hugo Best Short Story award, and was also a runner up for the same years Best Novel Hugo.
Orson Scott Card was a runner-up for the 1979 Hugo novellete award, while Stephen R. Donaldson won the 1979 Campbell award for best new writer.
