Dunno if its happening at other locations, but I learned starting tomorrow Sams is now only allowing 1 family member in-store at a time. There were people bringing their family and grandma to shop like its totally normal.

We're probably far from the bottom given how far we are from the peak of the covid mess. If he has a decent chunk of time he's better of than he is better off than people who invested a few month ago. So if he holds he'll probably will do fine for himself in the long term as long as the entire system doesn't collapse. If the system does collapse then $10k will likely be the least of his worries. Also, unless he is a spectacularly bad stock picker, his scattershot approach will serve him far better than betting on a couple of "surefire winners". If he is skint and that was his last $10k then he should get his cash out again asap...

It's actually a pain in the arse for them since it means they have to put back stuff like starting school or going back to their job since the sentence is still there.

Last week the state governments in Australia told people not to congregate in groups at beaches or the park and even put up big electronic signs with reminders. But the weather was really nice so this was the result: Surf lifesavers tried to nag people to stop congregating on the beaches which went over pretty much like the squeaky-voiced teen on the Simpsons when people told them to gently caress off so local mayors had to officially close the beaches and call in the cops to disperse crowds. It was a lovely sunny day today but the inner city beaches were still closed so thousands of people simply drove out to the more remote beaches: https://twitter.com/7NewsMelbourne/status/1243768313412378626

In Hawaii the guidance is that you can't hang out on any of the beaches but surfing is fine. Not a lot of social interaction when you're riding a wave

Exercising while practicing social isolation is fine, partying is verboten.

They tried voluntary rent caps to counter massive rent hikes here in Germany...didn't work and tennants called it before it was even in effect. Now they ask everybody to stay indoors and it doesn't work...and those actually practicing social distancing knew most people wouldn't. Sometimes people need to be not only told what to do but also punished If they dont. That is the reality. If you don't do this for decades, than the picture above is what you get. Because humans are selfish assholes. But politicians care more about votes and losing power than actually saving thousands of lives by slapping some wrists (see: selfish assholes)

The Australian government is the one that still insists hairdressers are too essential to shut down, and whose Prime Minister recently declared that 'if you have a job, your job is essential' despite the job category of 'retail' not being shut down yet. It's not surprising a huge chunk of the population isn't taking it seriously.

I also hear a lot of "well if it is really dangerous, it wouldn't be a recommendation, but an actual ban". So many people believe that anything not backed by harsh consequences isn't actually that serious, so sometimes recommendations against certain behavior can be not just ineffectual, but harmful - as stupid people think that only banned things can be dangerous.

Also not a doctor but if your tongue doesn't stop swelling soon maybe go see a doctor Swollen tongue is pretty common in food allergies. My tongue swells about 10% and gets tender if I eat strawberries or drink orange juice. For other people it's shellfish or peanuts or soy. Sometimes people take stuff like benadryl or offbrand claratin. Or maybe it's cancer

fwiw I found a couple pretty good summaries of what an who will be covered by the new unemployment benefits. There were a few people asking about it earlier. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/coronavirus-unemployment-benefits-here-s-who-qualifies-how-much-they-n1169846 https://www.nytimes.com/article/coronavirus-stimulus-package-questions-answers.html tl;dr: If you qualify for unemployment, regardless of if it was coronavrus related, you will be getting an extra $600/wk above what your income dictates and is allowed in your state, and for an extended period of time if it's needed i.e. you still haven't found a job after your states maximum benefits time runs out. And YES you could be making more money unemployed than if you were actually working. If anyone knows/finds anything different please let me know and I will correct my synopsis. schmug fucked around with this message at 11:56 on Mar 28, 2020 |
