In four shopping trips in the last two weeks, a combined total of like 9 different stores from those trips have been 100% completely and utterly sold out of any disinfecting products, all bleach products, all ammonia products, all hand sanitizers, and generally speaking everything I could possibly use to actually disinfect anything. I do have hand and dish soap, however. I'm getting to the point where that post about DIY soap-spray and whether it would work based on the lipid soaping is something *I* have seriously had to consider.

quote:The T4 virus initiates an Escherichia coli infection by binding OmpC porin proteins and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on the surface of E. coli cells with its long tail fibers (LTF).[9][10] A recognition signal is sent through the LTFs to the baseplate. This unravels the short tail fibers (STF) that bind irreversibly to the E. coli cell surface. The baseplate changes conformation and the tail sheath contracts, causing GP5 at the end of the tail tube to puncture the outer membrane of the cell. The lysozyme domain of GP5 is activated and degrades the periplasmic peptidoglycan layer. The remaining part of the membrane is degraded and then DNA from the head of the virus can travel through the tail tube and enter the E. coli cell. There's a bunch of cruise ships just hanging around outside Australia and the government has been "strongly suggesting" they return to their ports of origin and is starting to look into ways they can force them to move on. There's a bunch of Australian citizens stuck on a cruise ship in Uruguay and their travel company had organised a flight back for them and passengers from another ship which was going to cost each passenger several thousand dollars each, but the other ship wasn't allowed to dock and the travel company told them "Welp, we still gotta cover costs so without all those other people the price of your tickets has now increased $3200 apiece!" https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-31/aussies-stranded-worried-they-will-be-forgotten-amid-coronavirus/12105048 redgubbinz posted:Surely by now everyone's filled their mcmansions with toilet paper, how are the shelves still empty... Maybe they're just saying if they're that bad at applying a simple mask, how good were they at washing hands and using sanitizer and not touching their face and not crowding into common areas? Judging by upside down askew beardy guy and flat over the glasses lady I'm gonna say they weren't very careful about limiting exposure in the first place.
