Just got off the phone with Mom. Weekly check-in because i work at an airport and she worries about that a lot. Turns out she's still a full on Fox and Friends Trump supporter. Breaks my loving heart. She blamed Obama for the shortage of medical supplies. I only said two things: 1) It's been THREE YEARS! Are you literally saying the administration couldn't do an inventory in all this time when they knew a pandemic was coming last November?! (Answer: deflection.) 2) The previous administration (I make a point never to say "Obama") literally left a playbook called "The Playbook" for how the federal government should manage a pandemic but they ignored it. Her response was "I don''t know who 'they' are so you shouldn't go throwing blame around." They are likely to die under Trump but they will never ever under an circumstances criticize a single move he makes. Because: Fox News. I am very sad.

I hate-listen to a bunch of conservative Christian radio, and it surprises me how many Evangelicals are buying into the "manufactured crisis" conspiracy when it comes to Covid19. Like, American Family Radio is thiiiiis close to going full-blown truther and saying the whole thing is a socialist hoax in order to take down Trump. Every broadcast focuses heavily on how "wrong" the models are, and they're acting like hydroxychloroquine is a miracle cure sent by God that liberals are rejecting because they hate alive people. They're whining about stay-at-home orders and demanding that America gets back to work. To say that they're downplaying the situation would be an understatement. I would have thought that a pandemic would have them chomping at the bit to do the whole "call the nation to repent and blame it all on sinners" thing, but instead they're just waving their arms and screaming that there's nothing to see here. poo poo's bizarre.

The delivery drivers (and probably 75% of the staff) where I work seem to fill their heads with am talk radio most of the day, which comes as no surprise. I stepped outside for a smoke break today and one driver was "I gotta hear this...the socialist is OUT" and ran to his van to listen to what I'm pretty sure wasn't NPR. I just don't have it in me to "debate" with these people anymore, or even eavesdrop, but I overheard "free this and free that...how we gonna pay for it?!?...gotta give him credit for lasting this long" and, tbh, it really raises my ire. I doubt any of those dudes make more than me and they're actively celebrating what amounts to the death of affordable health care or college for at least the next 4 - 8 years. How do they not know they, yes, maybe their taxes might go up a bit BUT they won't have that employee health care plan deduction every months so their paychecks will go up. Most studies I've read say it's basically a wash for the under $50k/year crowd but let's say for the sake of argument that your taxes go up $500 a year. BUT you won't go bankrupt if you have a heart attack, a stroke or your child is injured in a car accident. If your daughter accidentally gets pregnant at 19 and decides to carry it to term, she will have no expense. MY SON, if he suffers ANOTHER epileptic seizure, it won't set me back another $3000 that I don't have. If your appendix bursts and you get rushed to the ER, you don't have to worry about the ambulance cost or whether the guy that sets your arm is "in network" or not. The gently caress do they care if there's no M4A or, more, why don't they want it just because they've been told "socialism bad"? They don't seem to have a problem with our socialist military, police force and fire department. Maybe they hate the USPS and have no use for libraries (they don't, lol). They get all of their news from corporate sponsored, think tank driven radio shows that are nothing more than infomercials disguised as news and from "discourse" driven by call screeners and even sometimes outright plants and actors disguised as "Joe from Boise". gently caress, even if my boss' taxes went up, he's hardly the target audience for Sanders' proposals and any tax increase would be offset by him not having to deal with HC coverage as a constant business expense I would think. That would probably basically be a wash too but maybe a net increase in productivity since he'd probably have less paperwork to deal with. Ok, maybe not. I mean, this poo poo convinces people that they're "free" when they're one trip to the ER away from going broke and they seem to take pride that "hey, at least we're workin' for our coverage and not a buncha' freeloaders" My boss and I discussed this once and he said "well, how many go to work just for the heath care coverage?" and I agreed it was probably a lot. I don't we saw on eye to eye on whether this was a good or a bad thing. ... Now we're gonna get 6 months of how Joe Biden is a big socialist and a bunch of sucking Trump's cock if the C19 death toll is less than 100,000 . It will either be "see? this was never a big deal" to "Look at this great job he did" and "only liberal cities had problems"..."liberals were HOPING for a big death toll"...and a big helping of "God saved us/liberal conspiracy" and all that poo poo. Whatever happens, they have their framing down and enough people will believe it. Worst case scenario? Well then it's "well it wasn't TRUMP's fault and look at the stock market. I mean, it took a global pandemic to raise the UE rate". Only solace I take is I can decide not follow debates and to not go full political junkie until then since I'm going to sadly go pull the lever for Joe loving Biden and I have nothing to be excited about politically probably within my lifetime. TL/DR: Conservatives voters are happy for some reason that we have no chance of affordable health care coverage, can't wait to work themselves to death for nothing and have their C19 talking points in place no matter what happens.

It's easier to deflect and pretend nothing is fundamentally different than to engage honestly with a new reality. He seems to enjoy having me around as his token liberal to an extent and (I think) semi respects me for drawing lines in the sand. He's dug in pretty deep but oddly compassionate at times. He gave me paid leave to go to rehab for drinking on the job when he should have fired me and seems to be trying hard to keep the shop open. He's promised that anyone furloughed will still have health insurance. He's a weird cat. I've never once seen or heard him laugh though which is the biggest thing that scares me about him. Hard to trust or relate to anyone that seems to lack a sense of humor but, on occasion, he seems to enjoy our back and forths and sort of seems to enjoy debating me. I dunno. It is what it is.
